COVINGTON, Ga. — Kenneth Eugene Barnhardt, 74, Covington, brother of Virginia Earnhardt, Salisbury, N.C., died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001).
Funeral services were held this morning at Canaan Baptist Church. Wheeler Funeral Home is in charge.
Raymond F. Christy
MOUNT PLEASANT — Raymond Frank Christy, 73, 9950 Mount Olivet Road, died Monday (Nov. 5, 2001) at his home after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 4, 1927, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Christy was a son of the late Walter Elmore and Roxie Lee Arthurs Christy. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, during World War II, he served in the hospital corps as an X-ray technician.
In his earlier years, he was employed as an X-ray technician with Cabarrus County Health Department. He also operated a country store and was a life insurance agent with Life of Virginia for many years.
A daughter, Susan Barnes, preceded him in death.
Survivors include wife Johnsie Rumple Christy; daughters Bernice Cresson, Salisbury, and Billie Jo Stewart, Mount Pleasant; sisters Goldie Rogers, Kannapolis, and Ann Long, Rockwell; brothers Otto, Ray, Paul, Walter and David Christy, all of Kannapolis, and Steve Christy, Concord; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Memorial, 4 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Grady Barringer.
Visitation: At the funeral home after the service.

LEXINGTON — Helen Fritts Craver, 77, Pete Fritts Road, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at New Hanover Medical Center, Wilmington.

Dewey Edward Dixon
NEW LONDON — Dewey Edward Dixon, 81, 38437 Ritchie Road, died Monday (Nov. 5, 2001) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center.
Born Aug. 19, 1920, in Minden,W.Va., Mr. Dixon, a son of the late Benjamin H. and Edith Broughton Dixon, was a retired coal miner and electrician.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. A recipient of the Russian Gold Medal of Honor, he was a member of the DAV.
His wife, Mary Margaret Bish Dixon, died Oct. 12, 1997. A grandson also preceded him in death.
Survivors include son Thomas E. Dixon, New London; daughters Sylvia Dixon Armstrong and Donna Dixon Fesperman, both of New London, Sandra Dixon Burr, Thomasville, Kathy Dixon Swaringen,Richfield, and Nancy Dixon Patete, Ashtabula, Ohio; sister Margaret F. Tomlinson, Rockwell; 10 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Stanly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Todd Tucker and the Rev. Mark Little. Burial, Faith Freewill Baptist Church cemetery.

Dorothy L. Gardner
MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Dorothy Lefler Gardner, 67, Mocksville, who died Friday (Nov. 2, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born April 24, 1934, in Rowan County, Mrs. Gardner was a daughter of the late Benny and Ruth Pepper Lefler. She was educated in the Rowan County schools.
A seamstress for Granite Knitware, Granite Quarry, she was a Methodist.
Her husband, L.D. Gardner, died Aug. 29, 1992.
Survivors include sons Thomas Gardner, Mocksville, Terry L. Gardner, Salisbury, Roger D. Gardner, Granite Quarry, Lonnie D. Gardner, Greensboro, and Kenneth Wayne Gardner, Wilmington; brothers Benny and James Lefler, both of Salisbury, Billy Lefler, Albemarle, and Jerry Lefler, Texas; sisters Betty Creswell, Peggy Beck, Pat Goodman, Frankie Smith, Donna Shinn and Deanna Upright, all of Salisbury, Judy Weaver and Reta Kissiah, China Grove, Ruby Lentz, New London, and Juanita Overcash, Badin; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mary Barger Hendrix
The funeral will be Wednesday for Mary Katherine Barger Hendrix, 75, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at RowanRegional Medical Center.
Born March 25, 1926, in Rowan County, Mrs. Hendrix was a daughter of the late Jess Luther and Eula Elizabeth Graham Barger. Educated in Rowan County schools, she retired from Stanback Powder Co.
She was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church Women, Rowan County Home Extension Club and Kennedy-Hall American Legion Auxiliary.
Her husband,Morris Homer Hendrix, died Nov. 13, 1994.
Survivors include son Morris H. Hendrix Jr., Danville, Va.; daughter Lynda Tornay, Suisun City, Calif.; foster son G. Wayne Hendrix, Salisbury; sisters Addie and Julia Barringer, both of Concord, and Florence Goodnight, Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Carroll L. Robinson. Burial in family plot in the church cemetery.

COOLEEMEE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Savannah Hairston Payne, 96, Jerusalem Avenue, who died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie in Advance. She was seriously ill for a week and in declining health for several years.
Born April 26, 1912, in Davie County, Mrs. Payne, a daughter of the late Samuel and Mollie Hairston, was educated in the Davidson County schools.
A nurses’ aide, she was formerly employed with Quint L Rest Home, Advance.
She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and a former member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church; a former church secretary and church secretary emeritus; a member of the Missionary Circle and the Davie County Missionary Union; and a charter member of Guiding Light Baptist Association. She was also a member of the Home Education Club, PTA of Davie County and the National Hairston ClanInc.
Her husband, Deloast Payne, died in June 1966.
Survivors include daughters Juanita Richardson, China Grove, and Genelle Watkins,Cooleemee; grandchild reared in the home Geraldine Cuthbertson; sister Mary Mason,Advance; and a host of other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Friendship Baptist Church, Cooleemee, conducted by the Rev. J.R. Samuels. Burial, church cemetery.

Myrtle Seagraves
The funeral will be Thursday for Myrtle Stoneman Keys Seagraves, 69, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital,Charlotte, after a period of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.
Born April 18, 1932, in Axton, Va., Mrs. Seagraves, a daughter of the late Roy W. and Ruth Waller Stoneman, was educated in the Henry County,Va., schools.
She worked at Best Uniforms of Salisbury and later retired after 18 years from Rowan Regional Medical Center, environmental services. She was of the Christian faith.
A son, Roy Allen “Jimmy”Keys, died Feb. 19, 2000; her first husband, James William Keys, died May 7, 1978; and her second husband,Donald Wilson Seagraves, died May 22, 1999.
Survivors include sons Tony, Jesse and Richard Keys, all of Salisbury, and Johnny Keys, Gold Hill; daughter Betty Jo Baynard, Linwood; stepson Donald W. Seagraves Jr., Cowpens, S.C.; stepdaughter Debra Oliver, Statesville; brothers James Stoneman, Bassett, Va., Bobby Stoneman, Fieldale, Va., and Homer Stoneman, Wayside, Va.; sisters Frances Fowler, Fieldale, Va., and Freda Smith, Rangely, Va.; 23 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Funeral services were held Nov. 2 for James Meredith Tulloh, 87, Charlottesville, formerly of Louisa, who died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001). He was the father of James M. Tulloh Jr. of China Grove.
Services were held at Woodward Funeral Home,Louisa.
Burial was at Mineral Baptist Church cemetery.
