JACKSONVILLE, FLA. —Osco Barringer, 91, formerly of Rowan County, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at his residence in Jacksonville.
The body will be brought back to Salisbury, N.C., where services and burial will be held.

Arthur Lee Doby
MOUNT PLEASANT—Arthur Lee Doby, 86, 8160 Wood St., died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at Transitional Health Care in Kannapolis.
Born July 3, 1915, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late John C. and Minnie Carter Doby. He was retired from Tuscarora Yarn.
Survivors include his wife, Othelia Leonard Doby; sons Jackie Doby, Gold Hill, and Larry Doby, Mount Pleasant; daughter Jean D. Bailey, Pawley’s Island, SC; brother Thurman Doby, China Grove; and three grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Carolina Memorial Park Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bill Nix. Entombment will be at Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Visitation: 10 to 11 a.m. Monday before the service at the chapel.

LEXINGTON—Vivian Jeanette Bland Hargett, 91, Welcome-Arcadia Road, Welcome, and formerly of Pickett Road in Welcome, died Friday (Nov. 2, 2001) at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation for Lexington.

Raymond Eli Lowder
ALBEMARLE—Raymond Eli Lowder, 84, 24087 Austin Road, died Friday (Nov. 2, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
He was the father of Carolyn L. Culp of Gold Hill.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gary Hunsucker. Burial will be at Canton Baptist Church cemetery.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hartsell Funeral Home. Other times the family will be at the residence on Austin Road.
Corinne Howard Major
MOORESVILLE—Corinne Howard Major, 85, died Friday (Nov. 2, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare.
She was the sister of Lynda H. Schenck, Kannapolis.
Services: A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phil DeBerry and the Rev. Joe Ervin. There will be a private burial at Glenwood Memorial Park before the service.
Visitation: The family will receive friends at the church following the service and other times at the home of Robert W. “Bob” Howard on Sample Road.

Edwin Norvell
Edwin Overman Norvell, 81, 950 Confederate Ave., died Friday (Nov. 2, 2001) at his home.
Born April 9, 1920, in Asheville, Mr. Norvell was the son of the late Edward Barbour Owen Norvell and Mildred Overman Norvell. He was a graduate of Boyden High School and attended Catawba College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He served during World War II as a captain in the Signal Corps in the South Pacific from 1942 until 1946.
For five years he worked in Durham as the southeastern district sales manager for Wright Machinery Co., a division of Sperry Corp. He then worked for Proctor Chemical Co. for 20 years and for National Starch and Chemical Co. for 10 years as vice president in sales.
Mr. Norvell has served on the board of directors of Proctor Chemical, the Lucile S. Proctor Foundation, the YMCA, Northwestern Bank, First Union Bank, Emerson Leather Co., and Historic Salisbury Foundation.
He also served on the vestry of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he was a lifelong member, the St. Luke’s Foundation Board and the Salisbury Planning Board for several years. He was also a member of the Salisbury Country Club and the Blowing Rock Country Club.
Active in civic affairs and local philanthropy, he and his wife, Lucile, whom he married on Sept. 16, 1950, were awarded the Clement Cup of the Historic Salisbury Foundation for their work in local preservation.
The Norvells also received the Gertrude Carraway Award given by the Historic Preservation Society of North Carolina for their work in restoring three houses in the West Square Historic District and the historic Crawford Building at 200 S. Main St.
The Norvell Distant Learning Center at Rowan Cabarrus Community College is named for Mr. and Mrs. Norvell because of their generosity to the school.
The Norvells were also one of the three largest donors to the Meroney Theater restoration of the Piedmont Players Theater Inc., and supported many other causes.
Survivors include his wife, Lucile Proctor Norvell, of the home; sons Edward Proctor Norvell, Salisbury, and Owen Barbour Norvell, Cary; two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Stephen Morris, pastor.
Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Summersett Funeral Home.

COOLEEMEE — Savannah Hairston Payne, 96, Jerusalem Avenue, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie after being seriously ill for one week and in declining health for several years.

Lloyd Norman Shoaf
Lloyd Norman Shoaf, 80, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at his residence following a brief illness.
Born December 14, 1920, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Odell and Lattie Myers Shoaf. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S.Army Air Force. He was retired from the engineering department of the W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center.
A member of Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church, he was also a member of the Harry Steele Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Winecoff Shoaf, of the home, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tony Jeffrey Jordan, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Lyerly Funeral Home.
