60 the magic score in Crescent scramble

BY ED DUPREE
SALISBURY POST

David Lyerly, Ronnie Wilhelm, Jerry Chipman Sr. and Jerry Chipman Jr. captured low gross honors on Saturday in the Oldsmobile Scramble at Crescent Golf Club.

Lyerly, Wilhelm and the Chipmans shot a 12-under-par 60, edging runners-up Tony McCorkle, Brad Anthony, David Lynn and Brandon Berckman by one stroke.

Nick Drye,Jeff Drye, Brandon Buchanan and Terry Rhodes took low net with a 57. Second place went to David Bolick, Randy Goins, Trent Bradshaw and Dwight Bradshaw, who shot a 59 and won on the second hole of a four-team sudden-death playoff.

Losing out in the playoff were Chris Cohen, Eric Baty, Mickey Bella and Mark Stout; Larry Walker, George Smith, Mike Lewallen and Cliff Travison; and Brian Boltz, Bob Boltz, Mark Davis and Lee Von Canon.

The first- and second-place teams in both the gross and net divisions advanced to the Section Finals in August. The teams can choose to play at either of four sites — Prestwick in Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Windermere in Blythewood, S.C.; Quarry Hills in Graham; and River Run in Davidson.

The tournament had 136 golfers (34 teams) entered, making it one of the biggest Oldsmobile Scramble local qualifiers in the nation.

Dave Bates and Wayne Tate were winners of a putting classic held for tournament entrants. They shot a 20 and won $200.

ACADEMIC HONOR: Rockwell’s Karl Mitchell, a recent UNC Greensboro graduate, was named to the Verizon Academic All-District III Men’s At-Large Spring First Team for the second straight season last week.

Mitchell, a former East Rowan High School golfer, is now eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be announced June 12.

Mitchell had his best golf season for the Spartans as a senior. He had a second-place finish in the Bearkat Classic in Montgomery, Texas, in April. His 208 scored in the tournament tied for the second-lowest 54-hole score in team history. He turned in a 74.38 stroke average for the year, including a team-best 72.7 in the spring. Mitchell had seven sub-par rounds during the spring. He was also the Spartans’ top finisher in the Southern Conference Championship, tying for seventh.

Mitchell is the first UNCG golfer to receive Academic All-District honors. He also earned Golf Coaches Association of America All-America Scholar Team honors last year. The 2001 team will be announced during the summer.
