Lula Pearl Binns

Lula Pearl Casper Garmon Binns, 83, Salisbury, died Tuesday (May 22, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.

Born April 29, 1918, in Rowan County, Mrs. Binns, a daughter of the late Andrew and Nannie Mae Cauble Casper, was educated in the Rowan County schools. A Lutheran, she retired from China Grove Cotton Mill.

Survivors include son Donald Wayne Garmon, Adrian, Mich.; daughter Barbara Ellen Garmon Higgins, Salisbury; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

No services are planned.

William “Bill” Branch

MOORESVILLE — William “Bill” Diogenese Branch, 81, South Magnolia Street, died Tuesday (May 22, 2001) at Maple Leaf Nursing Home, Statesville.

Services: 3 p.m., Friday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Phil DeBerry. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1:30-3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

LEXINGTON — The funeral will be Friday for Jessie Cooper Jr., 78, Pine Street, who died Monday (May 21, 2001) at his home.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Union Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Darryl Thomas. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2:30-3 p.m. Friday at the church and at other times at the home. The body will be ar Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home.

 

Joseph Dowd Jr.

LEXINGTON — The funeral will be Friday for Joseph Dowd Jr., 59, 117 Arcadia Lane, who died Monday (May 21, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Files Chapel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.W. Cade. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30-2 p.m. Friday at the church and at other times at the home of sister Emma Geter, 113 Foyell St. The body may be viewed 1-8 p.m ., Friday, Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home.

 

James F. Edwards

The funeral will be Friday for James Franklin Edwards, 64, 298 Fortune Lane, who died Tuesday (May 22, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born May 3, 1937, in Greenville, S.C., Mr. Edwards, a son of the late Frank Staley and Mary Ellen Shue Edwards, was educated in the New Hanover County schools. He was a sheet metal mechanic for Daniels Construction Co. and was a Baptist.

Survivors include sons James Michael Edwards, Gaston, S.C., and William Arnold and Carl Scott Edwards, both of Lexington, S.C.; daughters Tammy Ann Barrett, Columbia, S.C., and Teresa Jean Edwards, Lexington, S.C.; brother Jerry E. Edwards, China Grove; sister Doris Jean Hampton, Middletown, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

Services:Memorial, 8 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of brother Jerry E. Edwards, 711 Frontier Circle, China Grove.

SPENCER — J.W. Ellenburg, 82, First Street, died Thursday (May 24, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Mamie B. Everhart

LEXINGTON — Mamie Bolick Everhart, 88, White Street, died Wednesday (May 23, 2001) at Brian Center Nursing Home.

Services: Noon Friday, Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Holsenbach. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-noon Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of sister Edith Parks on Sweetbriar Drive.

Jay Dee “J.D.” Long

EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Saturday for Jay Dee “J.D.” Long, 70, 412 Robinson Road, who died Monday (May 21, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after an illness of three months.

Born July 10, 1930, in Rowan County, Mr. Long was a son of the late George W. and Avara Chavis Long. He attended Dunbar High School, was a retired employee of Southern Railroad and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Marcie Pledger Long; sons Robert Long, East Spencer, and Lafayette Jay Long, Charlotte; daughter Sharon Long Neely, Salisbury; sister Virginia Heggins, Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Shady Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John G. Gaston. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Mabel Hooker Toms

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Mabel Hooker Toms, 75, 1100 Sam Lions Trail, died Wednesday (May 23, 2001) at her home after a lengthy illness.

Her husband, Dr. Paul Bernhardt Toms, formerly of Salisbury, died on Jan. 31, 1982.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Christ Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Russell Burchard, the Rev. Lynwood Wells and the Right Rev. A. Heath Light. Burial, Roselawn Burial Park.

McKee-Stone Funeral Services is in charge.

 

Alma B. Williams

LEXINGTON — Alma Marie Black Williams, 81, West Holly Grove Road, died Wednesday (May 23, 2001) at Centerclair Nursing Home.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Second Reformed United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Moore. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.

Ralph M. Winecoff

The funeral will be Friday for Ralph McKenzie Winecoff, 76, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (May 23, 2001) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after a period of declining health.

Born Feb. 22, 1925, in Rowan County, Mr. Winecoff was a son of the late Walter Armstrong and Carrie Lyerly Winecoff. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.

Retired from KoSa, he earlier worked for Swicegood Paper Co. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

His wife, Bonnie Gaye Reed Winecoff, died July 9, 2000.

Survivors include stepdaughter Barbara Trexler, Salisbury; and sister Alice Bulla, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Claude Collins. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.
