KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Tuesday for
Estelle Phillips Broome, 83, 2602 W. C St., who died Thursday (May 17, 2001) at
her home.
Born Dec. 25, 1917, in Yadkinville, Mrs. Broome
was a daughter of the late Wade Hampton and Odis Carter Phillips.
She was a retired employee of Cannon Mills and a
member of Bethpage United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Lou
Smith Sunday School Class and the senior citizens group.
Her husband, Hoyt Paul Broome, died March 12,
1991.
Survivors include sister Mable Jeffries,
Plymouth.

James Ray Sides
CHINA GROVE — James Ray Sides, 52, China Grove,
died Saturday (May 19, 2001) at his home.
Born Feb. 3, 1949, in Rowan County, Mr. Sides was
a son of the late George H. and Jincie Trogdon Sides.
A graduate of South Rowan High School and Catawba
College, he was a commercial lines manager for EMC Insurance in Charlotte and
held a CPCU certification.
Mr. Sides was a member of Bethel Baptist Church
and served as treasurer of the Salisbury North Camp of Gideons International.
Survivors include wife Carolyn Holshouser Sides;
son Jeremy Sides, China Grove; daughter Carrie Sides, Concord; brothers Earl

Mitchell Brown, 83, 201 N. Lee St., who died Saturday (May 19, 2001) at Genesis
ElderCare of Salisbury.
Born June 27, 1917, in Summers County, W.Va.,
Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late George W. and Annie Mitchell. She was
educated in the Summers County, W.Va., schools.
A homemaker, she was a member of Oakdale Baptist
Church, Spencer.
Her husband,Charlie Robert Brown, died Nov. 28,
1969.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.

‘Ed’ Leonard
SPENCER — John Edward “Ed” Leonard, 78,
Spencer, died Saturday (May 19, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,
Salisbury, after two years of declining health.
Born Dec. 12, 1922, in Salisbury, Mr. Leonard, a
son of the late Charles Thomas and Ora Kennerly Leonard, was educated in the
Salisbury City schools.
He served in the U.S. Army from February 1943
until September 1945 in the 737 Tank Battalion of General Patton’s 3rd Army in
Norway, northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and central Europe.
He retired after 40 years from Owen-Leonard Inc.,
Heating and Air Conditioning. A member of Central United Methodist Church, he
was active on the Board of Trustees, Administrative Board, the United Methodist
Men and the Gordon-Gobbel Sunday School Class. He was a member of Harold
B.Jarrett American Legion Post 342, Salisbury, and a former volunteer with the
N.C. Transportation Museum.
Survivors include wife LaVerne Sharpe Leonard,
whom he married June 6, 1942; sons John R. “Randy”Leonard, Myrtle Beach,
S.C., and Richard S. “Rick” Leonard, Salisbury; brother Jack Leonard,
Salisbury; sister Margaret Summers, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

HICKORY — Ronald Wade “Little Bit” Stewart,
56, 2223 Third St. N.E., died Saturday (May 19, 2001) at Frye Regional Medical
Center.
Born Aug. 26, 1944, in Pearson County, Mr.
Stewart was a son of the late John Ray and Geneva Cothran Stewart Walton. He was
employed with CSSCleaning Co.
Survivors include wife Sylvia Poole Stewart;
daughters Laura Potter and Angela Stewart, both of Mocksville; sons Ronald
Stewart Jr., Mocksville, and Jeremy Bracken, Germany; stepdaughter Tabatha
Blackwell, Lexington; stepsons Michael and Jamie Gardner, both of Salisbury;
sisters Ann Buchanan, Bethlehem, and Martha Bracken, Advance; brothers Hugh Ray
Stewart, Roxboro, and James Stewart, Fayetteville; nine grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.

Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Jim Gryder and the Rev.Eddie Reynolds. The

Harry ‘Red’ Cole
BADIN—Harry Gene “Red” Cole, 53, 909
Sherman St., died Thursday (May 17, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born July 18, 1947, in Stanly County, he was a
son of the late Lonnie Luther and Grace Dillard Cole. A graduate of West Badin
High School, he was a former employee of Alcoa Badin Works. He was a member of
Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons Harold Gene Allen,
Charlotte, Brandon T. Cole, New London, and Paul Bennett, Norwood; daughters
Andrica Tyson Little, Albemarle, and Tammy Smith, Charlotte; brothers The Rev.

grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
