Clodfelter, 96, of 501 Reeves Ave., died Thursday (May 17, 2001) at Stanly
Memorial Hospital.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday at
Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, led by Dr. Gary Pinion. Burial
at Stony Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday
at the funeral home.
Roy Cordell Deyton
CHINA GROVE — Roy Cordell
Deyton, 77, of 455 Old Linn Road, died Thursday (May 17, 2001) in his home.
Born Jan. 6, 1924, in Cabarrus
County to the late Robert Taylor and Sallie Kate Sparks Deyton. Mr. Deyton
graduated from I.C.S. (Metallurgy) in 1954 and Alexander Hamilton Business
School in 1958.
A member of Trinity United
Methodist Church in Kannapolis where he had been a past chairman of the board of
trustees past Sunday School teacher and on several committees.
He was a member of the Cannon
Memorial Masonic Lodge #626, past master 1959, and received his 50th Years award
in 2000. He was also a 32 degree member of Scottish Rite Bodies.
Mr. Deyton was a member of the
Cannon Memorial YMCA, which he joined in1939. He was on the championship swim
team in 1939, board of directors for 30 years, past president and Man of the
Year in 1971.
He was a member of the Kannapolis
Fire Department and chief for 17 years before retiring in 1978.
He retired from Cannon Mills in
1985 as director of safety and workers compensation. He started work there in
1941.
Mr. Deyton was a U.S. Army
veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army, serving in combat with the 26th
Infantry Division-Europe receiving a Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge.
He was a life member of American
Legion Post 115, past commander, executive committee member, chairman finance
committee, past chef-de-grace 40-8 Voiture #1173.
His recognitions include:
- Kannapolis Jaycee’s Senior
Man of the Year in 1961;
- Past chairman of Rowan County
Parks and Recreation Commission, having served 13 years;
- N.C. Department of Labor
Safety Advisory board member for 18 years and;
- Former Democratic precinct
chairman;
Survivors include wife, Nell
(Peggy) Readling Deyton, son, Tony Deyton of China Grove, daughter, Louann D.
Shive, and husband, Terry, of Salisbury, brothers, Arleigh Deyton of Charlotte
and John Deyton of Atlanta, sister Ruth Covington of Richmond Va., and three
grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday at
Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, led by the Rev. Don Shuman and
the Rev. Pat Purdy. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.

Buford ‘R.D.’ Goodman
KANNAPOLIS — Buford Ardee
“R.D.” Goodman, 80, of 602 Walker St., died (May 18, 2001) at NorthEast
Medical Center in Concord.
He was born Sept. 14, 1920, in
Cabarrus County to the late Chester and Minnie Canup Goodman. Mr. Goodman
retired from Cannon Mills Co. #6 weave room. He was a member of the Pennsylvania
Avenue Baptist Church .
He is preceded in death by
brothers Arthur and Paul Goodman.
Survivors include brother, Lewis
Goodman, of Atlanta.
Services: Noon Sunday in
Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, led by the Rev. Donald E. Burleyson and the
Rev. James Aldridge. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.

Evelyn Blalock Hardy
MARTINEZ, Ga. – Evelyn Blalock
Hardy, 70, of Martinez, Ga., died Wednesday (May 16, 2001) at Eisenhower Army
Medical Center.
Mrs. Hardy was born July 24,
1930, in Salisbury to the late Joseph Franklin and Eva Loftin Blalock. She was a
retired finance officer with the civil service, a member of Advent Lutheran
Church and a member of the Order Of the Eastern Star, Martinez Chapter 464.
Survivors include husband,
Wallington “Wally” Hardy, son Wally Hardy of Martinez, Ga., daughter Deborah
Ann Hardy of Martinez, Ga., and three grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at
Elliott Sons Columbia Road Chapel, lead by pastor John Edwards. Entombment at
Bellevue Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

J. Edgar Lyerly
J. Edgar Lyerly, 84, of Salisbury
died Friday (May 18, 2001) at the home of his son after declining in health for
a period of time and being seriously ill for two weeks.
Born May 31, 1916, in Rowan
County to the late Sallie Miller and Charlie “C.A.” Lyerly, he was educated
in Rowan County schools.
Mr. Lyerly retired from Fiber
Industries (KoSa), was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Golden Age
Sunday School class and a life member of the Lutheran Theological Southern
Seminary Auxiliary.
Survivors include wife, Clara
Simmons Lyerly, son, James Eugene Lyerly of Salisbury, daughters, Linda Lyerly
Lambirth of Salisbury and Helen Lyerly of Rockwell, brothers, Mark and Herman
Lyerly of Salisbury, sisters, Alma Weaver of China Grove, Ethel Peeler of Faith,
Margaret Alsobrooks of Salisbury and Ruth Lyerly of Salisbury, seven
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday at St.
Peter’s Lutheran Church, led by the Rev. Doug Hefner and the Rev. Lori Hefner,
co-pastors. Burial on the family plot in the church cemetery.

ALBEMARLE — Jeanette Ovillian
Harrington Roberson, 66, of 1606 Ross Drive, died Friday (May 18, 2001) at her
home.
Born Nov. 24, 1934, in Stanly
County, to the late Bertha Magalene Morton Harrington and John Henry Harrington,
she was a retired spinner hand at Wiscassett Mills.
Survivors include husband,
Herbert Ray Roberson, sons, Ronald Roberson of Stanfield and Darrell Roberson of
Albemarle, daughters, Teresa Blalock and Janice Misenheimer of Richfield and
Terina Roberson of Charlotte, half-sisters, Elizabeth Edwards and Betty Ussery
of Albemarle, step-brothers, Larry Hathcock of Albemarle and Dorman Hathcock of
Peachland, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
