Leroy Burgess

WOODLEAF — The funeral will be Sunday for Oscar Leroy Burgess, 65, Woodleaf, who died Wednesday (May 16, 2001) at his home.

Born April 25, 1936, in Ruffin, Mr. Burgess was a son of the late Herbert Coleman and Mattie Sue Saunders Burgess. He graduated from Woodleaf High School and attended North Carolina State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

In 1991, he retired after 37 years as a machinist with Martin Marietta. A member and Sunday school teacher at Woodleaf United Methodist Church, he was in the John Wesley Sunday school class, the choir, and served on various committees. He was a former chief of Woodleaf Volunteer Fire Department.

A son, Eric Lee Burgess, died Feb. 12, 1984.

Survivors include wife Patricia Benson Burgess, whom he married June 6, 1958; brothers Thomas Burgess, Woodleaf, and Everett C. Burgess, Maiden; and sister Lillie B. Meeks, Reidsville.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Woodleaf United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Brenda Newman, pastor, and the Rev. Shirley Jones, interim pastor, Cleveland United Methodist Church. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: In the church sanctuary after the service.

Eula West Burris

ALBEMARLE — Eula West Burris, 89, 24724 U.S. Hwy. 52 S., died Thursday (May 17, 2001) at North Carolina Lutheran Home.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Stanly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Harold McDonald. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the funeral home.

Roy Allen Eagle

ROCKWELL — Roy Allen Eagle, 65, Rockwell, died Wednesday (May 16, 2001) at his home.

Born Aug. 31, 1935, in Rowan County, Mr. Eagle was a son of the late Allie Ed and Nettie Mae Moore Eagle. He was educated at Winecoff High School.

In 1998, he retired from North Carolina Finishing Co. after 45 years of service. A member of Clermont Freewill Baptist Church, Kannapolis, he was in the Men’s Sunday School Class and was a church musician.

A son, Timothy D. Eagle, died in 1993.

Survivors include wife Beatrice Lambert Eagle, whom he married in October 1952; sons Roy Allen “Sonny”Eagle Jr., Salisbury, and Roger Dale Eagle, Rockwell; daughters Kathy Eagle Patterson, Rockwell, and Lana Eagle Phillips, Salisbury; brother Earl E. Eagle,Kannapolis; sister Shirley E. Moffitt, Kannapolis; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 this morning, Powles Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Clayton Palmer Jr., pastor, Clermont Freewill Baptist Church, and the Rev. Dale Eagle. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Fidel C. Goodnight

KANNAPOLIS — Fidel Cordereo Goodnight, 68, Kannapolis, died at Transitional Health Services.

Born Sept. 19, 1932, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Goodnight was a son of the late W.O. and Mable Johnston Goodnight. Retired from auto sales, he was a member and deacon at Coddle Creek ARP Church, a 32nd degree Mason and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

His wife, Mary Lou Goodnight, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son Fidel Clyde Goodnight; sisters Mrs. Charles Myers and Mrs. Francis McCorkle, both of Concord; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Coddle Creek ARP Church, conducted by the Rev. James Hunt. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Wilkinson Funeral Home, Concord. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of a sister, 9600 Davidson Highway.

 

Annette Hess

Annette Hess, 69, of Salisbury, died Thursday (May 17, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 17, 1931, in Davidson County, Mrs. Hess was a daughter of the late Elmer C. and Lela Hoffner Newsome. Educated in the Davidson County schools, she retired from the furniture industry as a machine operator. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Jack Donald Hess, died Feb. 14, 1984.

Survivors include sons Todd Hess, of the home, and Bobby and Tony Reid, both of Lexington; daughter Patricia Reid Sink, West Virginia; stepdaughter Dixie McKnown, Roseland, Va.; brother Lewis “Bus” Newsome, Vineland, N.J.; sisters Katherine Cross, Ethel Beck and Doris Cross, all of Lexington, and Betty Newsome, Millville, N.J.; eight grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 4 today, Faith Lutheran Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Keith Copeland.

LeRoy Barden Lamm

ROCKWELL — LeRoy Barden Lamm, M.D., 79, Rockwell, died Wednesday (May 16, 2001) at his home.

Born Aug. 10, 1921, in Wilson, he was a son of the late Wiley S. and Jesse Barden Lamm.

A graduate of Lucama High School, he was a 1943 graduate of Duke University, a 1946 graduate of Bowman Gray School of Medicine, completed an internship at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and a residency in psychiatry at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and one at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, Ark. He did postgraduate studies in psychoanalysis at Chicago Institute.

A captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corp, 1947-49, he was later staff psychiatrist, chief of staff and hospital director at several veterans hospitals before coming to the VA Medical Center in Salisbury as hospital director in 1975. He was chief of psychiatry from 1975 until his retirement in 1986.

His wife, Mildred Newman Lamm, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son Wiley Barden Lamm, Rockwell; and daughters Mary Florence Lamm, Orlando, Fla., and Monica Ann Lamm, Winston-Salem.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. James E. Milton.

Visitation: None.

J. Edgar Lyerly

J. Edgar Lyerly, 95, of Salisbury, died Friday (May 18, 2001) at his residence.

William McClamrock

MOCKSVILLE — William Raymond McClamrock, 81, U.S. 64 East, died Thursday (May 17, 2001) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born May 5, 1920, in Davie County, Mr. McClamrock was a son of the late O.G. and Flossie Landreth McClamrock.

He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include wife Nellie Jo Booth McClamrock; sons Michael Raymond McClamrock, Georgetown, S.C, Kenneth Ray McClamrock, Winston-Salem, and Joseph Marshall McClamrock, Mocksville; brothers Grady and Ronald McClamrock, both of Mocksville; sisters Pauline Vaughn, Charlotte, Ethel Myers, Mocksville, and Mary Conrad, Welcome; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Union Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Brad Holliman and the Rev. Ed Tapper. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

Martha Perry Taylor

KANNAPOLIS — Martha Perry Taylor, 73, of 1217 Holland St., died Thursday (May 17, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after five years of declining health.

Born Oct. 8, 1927, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Taylor was a daughter of Colene Lowery Perry, Kannapolis, and the late James Perry. A homemaker, she was a member of United Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband C.B. Taylor; daughters Martha Diane Gregory, Gaynell Taylor McCauley and Barbara Taylor Sharpe, all of Kannapolis; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m., Sunday, United Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John E. Jones. Burial, Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m., Saturday, at the church.

Ronald Angelo Turner

Ronald Angelo Turner, 19, 305 W. Harrison St., died Sunday (May 13, 2001) at Durham Regional Hospital, Durham.

Born Aug. 11, 1981, in Rowan County, Mr. Turner was a son of the late Mamie Everhart and Charles Turner. He was educated at Knox Middle School.

He attended Holiness Church of Christ in Statesville.

Survivors include brothers William Turner and Charles Everhart, both of Salisbury; and sister Renee Everhart, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m., Saturday, Rowan Funeral Service, conducted by Bishop C.J. Florence. Burial, Belmont Cemetery, Statesville.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home.
