Myrtle Landen Beach

Myrtle LandenBeach, 89, Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, died Sunday (May 13, 2001) at the nursing home.

Born April 26, 1912, in Chinquapin, Mrs. Beach was a daughter of the late Dr. Jefferson Franklin Landen and Emily Quinn Landen. She was a graduate of Queens College and the University of North Carolina School of Library Science.

A teacher, she taught in the Duplin County schools in Morganton. At retirement, she was school librarian at Hudson High School.

Her husband, Judge Benjamen Beach, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a nephew.

Services: Graveside services were held at 11 this morning at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held May 19 at John Calvin Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. The Rev. Marvin Lindsay will officiate.

Maribeth ‘Beth’ Bost

ROCKWELL — Maribeth “Beth” King Bost, 53, Rockwell, died Tuesday (May 15, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Juanita Byrd Cline

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Juanita Byrd Cline, 84, formerly of 211 W. 22nd St., who died Sunday (May 13, 2001) at Transitional Health Services after several years of declining health and several months of serious illness.

Born April 5, 1917, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Cline was a daughter of the late Mack and Effie Kirby Byrd. In 1981, she retired from Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 spinning room, where she had worked many years. She was a Baptist.

Her husband, Harry G. Cline, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Harold Gray Cline,Kannapolis; and sisters Helen Davis and Hazeline Lord, both of Kannapolis, and Flora Armstrong, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Lord. Burial, Carolina MemorialPark.

Visitation: 12-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Gladys Clodfelter

LEXINGTON — Gladys Clodfelter, 87, Franklin Street, died Monday (May 14, 2001) at Sunbridge Nursing Home after five years of declining health.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Second United Church of Christ. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the funeral will be at the home on Franklin Street.

Samuel ‘Sam’ Foster

GRANITE QUARRY — The funeral will be Wednesday for Samuel Vernon “Sam” Foster, 88, Granite Quarry, who died Sunday (May 13, 2001) at his home.

Born Dec. 8, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Foster, a son of the late George Anderson and Mattie Waller Foster, was educated in the Granite Quarry schools. He was a retired brick mason and had worked with Earnhardt Brothers Construction Co. and Wagoner Construction.

A charter member of Maranatha Bible Church, he was in the Taft McCoy Sunday School Class and served as an usher.

Survivors include wife Jean Thomason Foster, whom he married Oct. 12, 1949.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Maranatha Bible Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Bob Freitas. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Robert L. Gainey

KANNAPOLIS — Robert L. Gainey, 67, 2404 Pennsylvania Ave., died Monday (May 14, 2001) at his home.

Born Aug. 1, 1933, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mr. Gainey was a son of the late Burdine Gainey and Hattie Roscoe Gainey Hancock. He retired in 1998 after 25 years with Watkins Motor Lines, Charlotte. He was an active member of Kannapolis Loyal Order of Moose since 1990.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Gainey Jr., and stepfather Luke Hancock.

Survivors include wife Joyce Laney Gainey; daughters Doris Medlin and Deborah Noblitt, both of Kannapolis; son Michael Gainey,Kannapolis; brother Edward Gainey, West End; sister Betty Price, Aberdeen; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Leon Smith and the Rev. Sam Whittington. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Elizabeth Hux “Joe Ann” Klein, 76, Clemmons, formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (May 14, 2001) at The Oaks of Forsyth, Winston-Salem.

Walter Hall Ledbetter

KANNAPOLIS — Walter Hall Ledbetter, 88, of Avante at Concord, formerly of North Main Street, died Sunday (May 13, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 23, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Ledbetter was a son of the late John Franklin and Mabel Lee Pethel Ledbetter. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He retired several years ago from Cannon Mills Co. No. 6 weave room.

His wife, Pansy Adams Ledbetter, died Dec. 24, 1999. A grandson also preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters Judy Harvey, Concord, and Doris L. Hamm, Salisbury; sons Jimmy Hall Ledbetter, Orlando, Fla., and Gary Ledbetter, China Grove; sisters Cora Lee Kimball, Rockwell, and Hattie Settlemyre,Kannapolis; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Fenton Jones. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Homer Ray Leonard

LEXINGTON — Homer Ray Leonard, 80, North Leonard Road, died Monday (May 14, 2001) at his home after a brief illness.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Center United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on North Leonard Street.

Jerry William Petrea

SPENCER — Jerry William Petrea, 58, 1515 S. Salisbury Ave., died Monday (May 14, 2001) at W.G. Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, after several years of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born Oct. 5, 1942, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Petrea was a son of the Rev. Fred William and Julia Mae Griffin Petrea, Mooresville. He was educated in the Salisbury city schools. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

He was employed as a truck driver with Schneider Trucking Co., Charlotte, until his retirement. He attended the Church of God.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include son Clay William Petrea, Mooresville; and sister Carol P. Durant, Salisbury.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, U.S. National Cemetery, Salisbury, Statesville Blvd. location, conducted by the Rev. John Miles, pastor, Mooresville Church of God, and his father, the Rev. Fred W. Petrea. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 10-10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.

Carolyn Sloan

Carolyn Sloan, 46, 345 York Road, died Monday (May 14, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two years of declining health and several months of serious illness.

Born June 28, 1954, in Salisbury, Ms. Sloan was a daughter of Doretha Feamster Sloan, Salisbury. She was a graduate of West Rowan High School and attended Livingstone College.

She was last employed at Fieldcrest Cannon Plant 16 and West Rowan High School cafeteria. A member of Macedonia Baptist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher and youth worker.

Survivors include brothers Clyde, Randy and Darrell Sloan, all of Salisbury; and sisters Dianne and Gail Sloan, both of Salisbury.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Velna Lou Davis Ward

ALBEMARLE — Velna Lou Davis Ward, 88, 625 Bethany Road, died Monday (May 14, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Peter Joseph Shadroui

The funeral will be Thursday for Peter Joseph Shadroui, 79, 411 W. Bank St., who died Sunday (May 13, 2001) at New Hanover Medical Center, Wilmington.

Born Jan. 23, 1922, in Barre, Vt., Mr. Shadroui was a son of the late Joseph George and Marrianne Jaffre Shadroui. He was educated in the Barre, Va., schools and was a graduate of the University of Illinois and Boston College.

He was a second lieutenant and a bombardier during World War II in the U.S. Air Force. He was an attorney in Vermont and a member of the bar association and later was a retail buyer for Sangers Department Store. He owned and operated Pla Mor Lanes Bowling Center, Statesville, for over 30 years.

A member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, he was a life member of Statesville Moose Lodge and was past president of the Bowling Proprietors Association of the Carolinas. He also served on the Salisbury Planning Board.

An avid sailor, he was an active member of the Davis Harbor Yacht Club, Lake Norman.

Survivors include wife “Stella” Marie Teresa Lareau Shadroui, whom he married in 1951; sons Michael Joseph Shadroui, Salisbury, and George Phillip Shadroui, Memphis, Tenn.; daughters Joanne Mary Shadroui, Wilmington, and Marie Anne Robbins, Salisbury; brothers Paul Joseph and Richard Michael Shadroui, both of Barre,Vt.; sister Celia Shediac, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; and five grandchildren.

Services: Mass of Christian burial, 10 a.m., Thursday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. John Putnam. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home.
