Tourney honors North Rowan’s Bob Hundley

The golf notebook ...

The Bob Hundley Golf Tournament will be played Saturday, June 2 at Corbin Hills in honor of the former coach and athletics director at North Rowan High School.

The event is being sponsored by the North Rowan Boosters Club in honor of Hundley’s 30-plus years with the school. It is a fund-raiser raise for the Cavaliers’ athletic program.

The entry fee for the captain’s-choice tourney, due May 23, is $40 per person or $160 per team. It includes green and cart fees and refreshments.

There will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

HOME BUILDERS: The 12th annual Salisbury-Rowan Home Builder’s Association Spring Golf Tournament is scheduled Thursday, May 17 at Corbin Hills. It will have a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start.

The entry fee for the captain’s-choice tourney is $50 per person, which includes green and cart fees, a barbecue dinner and refreshments.

PARENT-CHILD: The Warrior Golf Club Parent-Child Tournament will be held Saturday, June 9.

The tourney will have six age groups — 5&under, 6-9, 10-11, 12-14, 15-17 and 18&over.

The 5&unders will play five holes with the children starting from the 150-yard markers.

The 6-9 and 10-11 divisions will play nine holes with the children teeing off from the red tees.

The 12-14 age group will consist of 18 holes with children playing the gold tees.

The oldest two divisions will play from the white tees.

The entry fee is $25 per team for members and $40 for non-members in the youngest three divisions and $30 for members and $50 for non-members in the oldest three groups.

The entry fee includes gree and cart fees plus a cookout following the tourney.

The format will be modified alternate shot.

MCCOMBS MEMORIAL: Steve Huie, Doug Latham, Eddie Sherrill and Wayne Smith won the Carl D.McCombs Memorial Tournament at Corbin Hills recently. The foursome shot a 15-under-par 57 and won first place on a scorecard playoff.

Second place on the tie-breaker went to Marvin Brothers, Brad Brothers, Tracy Roberson and Art Roberson.

Marty Griffin, Mike Foil, Johnny May and Ben Johnson shot a 58 and took third place on the scorecard playoff.

Also shooting a 58 and finishing fourth were Bob Whitley, Linda Whitley, Walt Shoaf and Bob Kimball.

RASH OF ACES: Two hole in ones were scored on the same day at the Country Club of Salisbury on Saturday, May 5.

First, Sandy Goodman aced the par-3, 140-yard No. 9 hole with a 7-iron. One of his playing partners let it be known that Goodman used a ladies Precept ball. His partners were Charles Taylor, Rivers Lawther and Hank Newman.

Later, Davie Roueche got his ace on the par-3, 160-yard No. 6 hole with an 8-iron. Mike Whisenant and Bob Rusher were his witnesses.

East Rowan golfer Adam Graham aced the par-3, 165-yard No. 6 hole at McCanless Golf Club recently while playing with teammates Tyler Sloop, Scott Young and Charlie Leazer. Graham used an 8-iron.

Jeff Clarke scored a hole in one at the Warrior while playing with brother Ken, Andy Huffman and Chris Owens. Clarke used a 6-iron to ace the par-3, 164-yard No. 8 hole from the blue tees.

Martin Kane of Concord aced the par-3, 170-yard No. 5 hole at Corbin Hills with a 3-wood. He was playing with Johnny Graham.

NET WINNER: Louise Walser was the low net winner in a recent Country Club of Salisbury Women’s Golf Association Nassau tourney.

Mary Ellen Bailey had low net on the front nine, while Elaine Fuller and Avice Bost tied for low net on the back nine.

Sybil Ritchie had the low net for golfers playing nine holes.

Fuller also won the April ringer tourney with Betty Jean Brittain finishing second.
