Leslie Fredrick Becker
Leslie Fredrick Becker, 88, Salisbury, died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born March 30, 1913, in Princeton, Ill., Mrs. Becker, a daughter of the late Fredrick William and Minnie Vick Becker, was educated in Bureau Township schools in Illinois.
He was a farmer and later worked for Del Monte Co. as a farm machinery repairman. A resident of Salisbury since 1995, he was a Lutheran.
His wife, Dorothy Jean Stoughton Becker, died July 11, 1995.
Survivors include sons Ronald Becker, West Plains, Mo., Fred Becker, St. Anne, Ill., and Bruce Becker, Arlington, Ill.; daughters Shirley Schmidt, Princeton, Ill., and Ruth Zweep, Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services, visitation and burial will be in Princeton, Ill. Burial will be at Elmlawn Cemetery.
Lyerly Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements. Norberg Memorial Home, Princeton,Ill., is handling out-of-state arrangements.

Emmanuel Bush
Emmanuel Bush, Arlington, Va., formerly of Salisbury, died Sunday (May 6, 2001).
A graduate of J.C. Price High School, Mr. Bush was the son of Isabell Bush Ford and stepson of the late Henry C. Ford.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Ruby Bush; daughter Saundra Cureton, East Spencer; son Cedric Donaldson, East Spencer; other children Michelie R. Jackson, Reginald T. Bush and Emmanuel J. Bush; brothers Chris and Glenn Ford, both of Salisbury, Timmy Ford, East Spencer, and Ira Ford, Bastrop, La., formerly of Rowan County; sisters Wanda Jackson, Juel Ford and Henrietta Johnson, all of East Spencer, and Renee Miller, Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Mount Zion Baptist Church, Arlington, conducted by the Rev. Leonard Smith. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial, Pleasant Valley Memorial Park.

Ross ‘Jack’ Garrison Jr.
The funeral will be Saturday for Ross Walter “Jack”Garrison Jr., 88, 227-C Klumac Road, who died Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at his home.
Born Jan. 13, 1913, in Henderson, Mr. Garrison, a son of the late Ross W. and Lessie Southgate Hamlet Garrison, was a graduate of the Salisbury schools and Salisbury Business College.
He began his career in the textile industry, then entered the soft drink industry before joining Rowan Dairy in 1950 as general sales manager. In 1965, after the merger with Long Meadow Farms, he became general sales manager of the Salisbury Division. When the company merged with Flav-O-Rich, he was area manager. He retired Feb. 1, 1978 after 27 years.
A member of First Presbyterian Church, he was a former member of Salisbury Rotary Club and Salisbury Rowan Merchants Association. He was a member of Salisbury Country Club, where he served two terms as president. He was a past president of Salisbury Sales Executive and Marketing Club and the North Carolina Independent Dairy Sales Managers Association.
His first wife, Wilhelmina “Dot” Manning Garrison, died Dec. 5, 1983, and his second wife, Dorothy Holt Garrison, died Feb. 22, 2000.
Survivors include daughter Betty Yearout, Mount Pleasant, S.C.; brother Hal Garrison, Salisbury; stepson Richard A. Holt, Houston,Texas; stepdaughter Patricia H. Peterson, Dharan, Saudi Arabia; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 4 step-great-grandchildren.
Services: 12 p.m. Saturday, First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert Lewis. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.
Visitation: The family will receive friends at the home at Trinity Oaks and on Saturday after the service at the church.

LEXINGTON — Virginia Pauline Kepley, 87, Allred Road, died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at Brian Center Nursing Home after several months of declining health.

Robert Ray Kluttz
Robert Ray Kluttz, 73, 6250 S. Main St., died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Feb. 25, 1928, in Rowan County, Mr. Kluttz was a son of the late Ray and May Ritchie Kluttz. He was educated in Rowan County schools and was the former owner/operator of Kluttz Construction Co.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
His wife, Dovie Arthurs Kluttz, died Jan. 24, 1989.
Survivors include daughters Anna Elizabeth Hinshaw and Nora Camille Helms, both of Salisbury; sisters Kay Jones, Mooresville, and Betty Safrit, China Grove; and five grandchildren.

James C. Lindsay, 79, 179 Tuttle Road, Midway community, died Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at his home after an extended illness.

‘Smokey’ Miller
ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Saturday for Charles Carey “Smokey”Miller, 82, Rockwell, who died Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born April 26, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Miller was a son of the late Charles Alexander and Viola Earnhardt Miller. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and attended Salisbury Business College.
He owned and operated Miller’s Barber shop for 58 years. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a life member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a former church treasurer. He was also a member of the choir, the church council and was a Sunday school teacher. A former member of Rockwell Civitans, he was a member of Immanuel Seniors, Rockwell Amvets, the American Legion and the VFW.
His wife, Mabel Wyatt Miller, died Aug. 6, 1985.
Survivors include sons Charles R. “Ronnie” and Richard W. “Rick” Miller, both of Rockwell; brother Edward Miller, Salisbury; sisters Anice Morgan, Spencer, and Faye Terry, Kannapolis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Twila Dalton Oldham
KANNAPOLIS — Twila Gonzalee Dalton Young Oldham, 77, 1103 Horton Ave., died Saturday (May 5, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Oct. 27, 1923, in Carroll County, Va., Mrs. Oldham was a daughter of the late Lester and Louise Barnes Dalton. She had been an area resident since 1942 and attended Calvary Assembly of God.
She was preceded in death by husbands Jerry K. Young and Robert Oldham.
Survivors include son Lester D. Young, Kannapolis; stepsons Terry Lee Oldham, Hickory, Fredrick Eugene and Robert Bryce Oldham, both of Charlotte; brother Currell Dalton, Richmond, Va.; and six stepgrandchildren.

Marshall B. Payne
KANNAPOLIS — Marshall Brandon Payne, 84, 604 Willow Drive, died Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after four years of declining health and four months of serious illness.
Born May 17, 1916, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Payne was a son of the late Marshall Memory and Edith Kincaid Payne. He was a 1937 graduate of North Carolina State University,Raleigh.
He began work with Cannon Mills Co. in 1937 in the Plant 1 No. 2 card room. He held practically every job in carding, spinning and weaving at the plant and then became night superintendent.
He later was superintendent of plants 2, 5, 9 and 10 before moving to the towel department in 1951. He advanced throughout his 47 years with the company eventually assuming the position of vice president of the towel department and merchandise manager. He retired in 1981.
A life-long member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he was on the board of stewards, a former member of W.J.Bullock Sunday school class and an honorary member of the Crafty Ladies group, where he helped with woodworking and making crafts.
Mr. Payne was a former member of Kannapolis Rotary Club and the YMCA’s J.T. Fesperman Y’s Men’s Club. He was a member of a couples bridge club and was an active member of the Wolfpack Club.
His first wife, Mary Lorene Thomason Payne, died Oct. 28, 1990. The couple were married for 50 years.
Survivors include wife Margie C. Payne; son Marshall Brandon Payne Jr., Kannapolis; daughter Prue Snider, Spencer; brother Raymond J.Payne, Charlotte; sisters Agnes Schifando, Kannapolis, Margaret Brooke, Miami, Fla., Frances Walden, Bishopville, S.C., Mildred Turner,Landis, and Hilda P. Ellington, Charlotte; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman, the Rev. Pat Purdy and Sarah Weaver. Entombment, Carolina Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum.

Timothy Alan Springer, 47, Edinburg, Texas, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Springer was the son of Vance and Anna Springer of Salisbury.
