FORTMILL, S.C. — Pfeiffer University’s Dave Davis is best known as the school’s men’s basketball coach, but he also directs a golf team that performed an electrifying slam dunk on Wednesday.
Davis’ surprising 14th-ranked Falcons won the three-day NCAA Division II South Regionals at Regent Park Country Club, defeating a field which included top-ranked and three-time defending national champ Florida Southern, national No. 3 West Florida and No. 5 Rollins. Pfeiffer had never, ever beaten Florida Southern.
“The Florida schools are always amazing and unbelievable,” said Davis. “Florida Southern dominates D-II golf like UCLA dominated basketball in the John Wooden era. They beat the Division I guys. They beat Stanford by 13 shots recently.”
The Falcons qualified for the nationals for the third time in four years. Pfeiffer finished ninth in 1999 and 10th in 1998.
This year’s nationals will be held in Grand Rapids., Mi., from May 22-25.
Pfeiffer had three of the top individuals in the regional led by All-American Ben Case, who finished second in the 90-player field. Case shot 69-70-70-209 to finish 4-under par.
Andrew McArthur shot 1-under and had 14 birdies in the tourney to finish fourth. Luke Poulter equaled par at 213 and tied for fifth. Ben St. John was 25th and Doug Delaney contributed two strong rounds.
“This is by far the best win in school history,” said Davis. “The South Regional is generally tougher than the national tournament and there’s definitely more pressure. Our team got off to a great start and played topnotch golf for three days.”
Pfeiffer has won three tournaments in a row. The Falcons took the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference tourney by a whopping 31 shots and won the Carolina Sands, where they shot a school-record 10-under par 278 on the last day.
“We’ve been to the nationals before with the goal of finishing in the top 10,” said Davis. “After this tournament, we understand that we have a legitimate shot at winning the national championship.”
