Mary Seamon Belk

MOUNT ULLA — Mary Seamon Belk, 79, Umberger Road, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at Genesis ElderCare, Mooresville.

Born Feb. 27, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Belk was a daughter of the late William and Ella Sapp Seamon. She was a homemaker. A member of Centenary United Methodist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher.

Her husband, James Belk, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons William Rankin “Bill” Belk, Apex, and James David “Jim” Belk, Kennesaw, Ga.; brother Brice Seamon,Mount Ulla; sister Betty Elliott, Mount Ulla; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m Thursday, Centenary United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Champion. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Virgie Hatley Billings

CONCORD — Virgie Hatley Billings, 65 Pinecrest Drive, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at Johnnies Home.

Born Aug. 2, 1915, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Billings was a son of the late Wiley and Mary Harrington Hatley. She had been a spinner at Brown Mill.

A member of Southside Baptist Church, she was a life member of DAV Auxiliary.

Her husband, Jackson Theadore Billings, preceded her in death. A granddaughter also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Charles and Jack Billings, both of Kannapolis; daughters Joan Blackwelder, Easley, S.C., and Lavan Turner, Concord; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, West Concord Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Robert Leonard.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home on Pinecrest Drive.

Memorials: Southside Baptist Church, 561 Union Cemetery Road, Concord, NC 28027.

 

Mae K. Courreges

The funeral will be Thursday for Mae Kendrick Courreges, 74, 201 N. Lee St., who died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Born Jan. 9, 1927, in Rowan County, Mrs.Courreges was a daughter of the late Everette Michael and Sadie Daniel Kendrick. She was educated in the Salisbury City Schools and was a 1944 graduate of Boyden High School.

Employed by Southern Bell for 20 years, she also operated the switchboard at Rowan Memorial Hospital, and had also worked at a telephone answering service in Greensboro before her 1989 retirement. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include sons David Courreges, Claremont, and Marc Courreges, Prattville, Ala.; sisters Doris Shearer and Nancy Ritchie, both of Spartanburg, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Griffis, senior pastor, First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Sherri E. Barnes, associate pastor.

Visitation: At the cemetery after the service.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

Beatrice Jenkins Frye

MOCKSVILLE — Beatrice Jenkins Frye, 93, Sunset Drive, died Monday (May 7, 2001) at Davis Community Hospital, Statesville.

Born Feb. 25, 1908, in Yadkin County, Mrs. Frye was a daughter of the late Pleasant Dolpus and Mattie Plowman Jenkins. She retired from Blackwelder Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Turrentine Baptist Church.

Her husband, George Ira Frye, died in 1962. She was also preceded in death by daughters, Ruby Fisher and Norma Jean Frye.

Survivors include son George Frye, Mocksville; daughters Lib Lefler, Mildred Spry and Evelyn Trexler, all of Mocksville; sister Magalene Reynolds, Stanleyville; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev.Joe Smith. Burial, Fork Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Ruth A. Hengst Grim

COLUMBIA, Pa. — Ruth A. Hengst Grim, 91, Columbia, formerly of Red Lion, died Sunday (May 6, 2001) at Hospice Center, Lancaster, after a brief illness. She was the mother of Vivian Sauder of Rockwell, N.C.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Burg Funeral Home, Red Lion. Burial, Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 9-10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Wayne Ludwig

LINWOOD — Paul Wayne Ludwig, 62, Sowers Road, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at his home.

Piedmont Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge.

 

Ophelia L. McClure

KANNAPOLIS — Ophelia Christine Lowery McClure, 63, 2304 Carolina Ave., died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at her home after six months of declining health.

Born Nov. 24, 1937, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. McClure was a daughter of the late William Homer and Fannie Mae Melton Lowery. In her earlier years, she worked at various hosiery mills. Later she was a nursing assistant.

She was a member of Royal Oaks Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include husband of 40 years Charlie H. McClure; daughters Pamela Hicks and Susan Penninger, both of Kannapolis, and Kimberly Musgrove, Concord; brother Frank Lowery, Kannapolis; sister Kay Burgin, Gastonia; stepdaughter Teresa Cauble, Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Royal Oaks Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Pittman. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday,Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Ronnie Keith Morgan

Ronnie Keith Morgan, 41, Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, formerly of 290 Sandy Creek Lane, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 24, 1959, in Rowan County, Mr. Morgan was a son of Judy Beaver Morgan, of the home, and the late Ronald Ray Morgan. He was a graduate of East Rowan High School.

A nursing assistant at Genesis ElderCare, he also worked as a photographer for Sears and Olan Mills. He was a member of New Haven Baptist Church, active in youth ministry and a member of the choir.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include daughters Carissa and Ariel Morgan, both of Lexington; brother Terry L. Morgan, Miami, Fla.; and sister Linda Morgan, Elizabethton, Tenn.

Services: Memorial, 6 p.m. Thursday, New Haven Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Delmar Johnson.

Visitation: 5:30-6 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Frances C. Shuping

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Thursday for Mary Frances Cassell Shuping, 74, Rockwell, who died Monday (May 7, 2001) at Five Oaks Nursing Home,Concord.

Born April 1, 1927, in Granville,Ga., Mrs. Shuping was a daughter of the late William Stowers and Lillie Stowers Wall. She was educated in the Georgia schools.

A homemaker, she retired from the spinning room at Cannon Mills,Rockwell. She was a member of Organ Lutheran Church.

Her first husband, Clyde Ellis Hogan, died in September 1947; her second husband, Charles Douglas Shuping, died Aug. 6, 1990; son Jerry Ray Hogan, died in 1970; and son Garland Shuping died Feb. 18, 2000.

Survivors include son Dane Shuping, Rockwell; daughters Brenda Helms, Concord, Nina Pope, Salisbury, and Marsha Schrull, Blackwood,N.J.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Torrence, pastor, First Assembly Church, Concord. Burial, Ursinus United Church of Christ cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30-4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
