Grover Lee Anthony

KANNAPOLIS — Grover Lee Anthony, 68, Avante Nursing Center, formerly of 1561 Kingston Drive, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after several years of declining health.

Born March 22, 1933, in Lincolnton County, Mr. Anthony was the son of Roxie Mae Littlejohn Anthony, Kannapolis, and the late Cunningham Anthony. He had worked for Fieldcrest Cannon more than 36 years. Mr. Anthony was a member of Marable Memorial AME Zion Church. A baseball player in his early years, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include sisters Bettye S. Harris, Mary A. Stancill and Geraldine Anthony, all of Kannapolis, Dr. Ruby L. Anthony-White, Richmond, Ind., Margaret Forte, Baltimore,Linda Dianne Berry, Charlotte, and Sylvia Brawley, Salisbury; brothers James Tony Anthony, Buffalo, N.Y., Otto Anthony, Charlotte, Everette Charles Anthony, Upper Marlboro, Md., Ronnie Anthony, Kannapolis, and Larry Anthony, Atlanta.

Services: Tuesday, 3 p.m., Marable Memorial AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Grant Harrison Jr. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: Monday, 6 to 8 p.m. at Clark Funeral Home. The family will be at the home other times.

 

Willie Martin Lynn

EAST SPENCER — Willie Lee Martin Lynn, 58, 128 N. Long St., died Wednesday (May 2, 2001) at her residence.

Born July 3, 1942, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Willie Mae Patterson Martin. A graduate of Dunbar High School, she was employed as a custodian at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. She was a member of Southern City AME Zion Church.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Lynn; sons Terry Davidson and Rodney Howell, both of Salisbury, Leon Lynn, Charlotte, and Gregory Lynn, Concord; daughters Carrie Lynn, East Spencer, Teretha Lynn, Salisbury, and Talita McCain, of the home; brothers Richard McNeely, Robert McNeely and Dexter Fortune, all of Salisbury; sisters Rita and Renee Simpson, both of Salisbury; and 10 grandchildren.

Services: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Southern City AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Rollins Graham. Burial, National Cemetery, Brenner Avenue.

Visitation: Noon-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the church.

Rowan Funeral Service, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Eva Black Mann

CHINA GROVE — Eva Black “Hoppy”Mann, 79, 4280 Old Beatty Ford Road, died Friday (May 4, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born in Cabarrus County on July 1, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Nola Loftin Black. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Mann attended Blessed Hope Baptist Church in Harrisburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl C. Mann, and a son, Homer Mann.

Survivors include daughter Betty Milstead, with whom she made her home; sister Peggy Triplett, Kannapolis; three granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev.Ray Helms. Burial, Sunset Cemetery, Kannapolis.

Visitation: Today, 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Agnes G. McDaniel

Agnes Graham McDaniel, 82, formerly of Statesville Boulevard, died Friday (May 4, 2001) at the Laurels of Salisbury after three years of declining health.

Born Dec. 5, 1918, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Lelia May and Walter K. Graham. Educated in the Cleveland schools, she had worked for Southern Bell for 36 years before retiring in 1984.

She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Grace Barringer Circle. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 117, and the Pioneer Telephone Club.

Her husband, Thomas Victor “Bob” McDaniel died Jan. 21, 1995.

Survivors include brothers Howard Graham, Mount Ulla, and Robert Graham, Cleveland; and sisters Irene G. Kluttz and Betty G. Shoemaker, both of Cleveland.

Services: Monday, 2 p.m., St. Luke’s Lutheran Church,Mount Ulla, conducted by the Rev. Milbert Kurtz. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: Today, 7 to 9 p.m., Summersett Funeral Home.

Mary Barger Mustard

Mary Catherine Barger Mustard, 77, formerly of Salisbury, died Friday (May 4, 2001) at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md., where she made her home.

Educated in the Rowan County schools, Mrs. Mustard was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, where she also did volunteer work with the American Red Cross.

Survivors include husband J. Ronald Mustard; and sisters Georgia Lookabill and Margaret Jones, both of Salisbury, and Ellen Fink and Frances Hess, both of Faith.

Services: Graveside, Tuesday, 1 p.m., Salisbury National Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: Tuesday, 11:30-12:30 p.m., Lyerly Funeral Home. Also Monday, 7-8 p.m., at the home of sister Frances Hess, 335 Binder Road, Faith.

 

Edward Franklin Rector

Edward Franklin Rector, 84, died April 26, 2001, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., of a heart attack. He was a graduate of Catawba College.

A native of Marshall, Rector had retired as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force.

Services: 3 p.m. on May 14, a Monday, Memorial Chapel at Fort Myers, Arlington, Va. Burial with full military honors at the National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Ruth M. Sherrill

KANNAPOLIS — Ruth M. Sherrill, 92, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at Autumn Care Nursing Center, Salisbury, after being seriously ill for 4 weeks.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Smith. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the church.

Dennis Wayne Sloan

Dennis Wayne Sloan, 47, 6921 Meade St., Pittsburgh, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh after being ill for several days.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by Bishop Harvey Rice. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.

 

Orpha Angell Smith

MOCKSVILLE — Orpha Angell Smith, 84, Cherry Street, died Friday (May 4, 2001) at her residence.

Born April 28, 1917, in Davie County, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late John T. and Juanita Hanes Angell. She attended First Baptist Church of Mocksville and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Lee Grant Smith; daughters Rosalee S. Fesperman, Salisbury, and Kathy S. Harpe, Mocksville; brother Dr. J. W. Angell, Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, Monday, 4 p.m., Rose Cemetery, conducted by the Rev.Danny Shore.

Visitation: 3-4 p.m Monday, Davie Funeral Service.

 

James Roy Whitaker

CONCORD — James Roy Whitaker, 86, 153 White St. N., died Friday (May 4, 2001) at Duke Medical Center, Durham.He was the brother of Rodney C. Whitaker of Salisbury.

Services: Monday, 2 p.m., Harmony United Methodist Church. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. today, Wilkinson Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence the rest of the time.

Memorials: Harmony United Methodist Church, 101 White St. N., Concord, NC 28027.

 

Raymond E. Wilson

LEXINGTON — Raymond E. Wilson, 75, formerly of Westside Drive, died Friday (May 4, 2001) at Lexington Health Care.

Services: 3 p.m. today, First Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. today, church parlor. At other times, the family will be at 400 Homewood Lane.

Piedmont Funeral Home is in charge.
