Mary Stutts Barnhardt

KANNAPOLIS — Mary Stutts Barnhardt, 87, 503 Jackson St., died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at her home.

Born Jan. 11, 1914, in Iredell County, Mrs. Barnhardt was a daughter of the late Elliott H. and Harriet Fincannon Stutts. She was a 1932 graduate of Mooresville High School and a 1936 graduate of Lowrance Hospital School of Nursing.

She began her nursing career at Lowrance Hospital in 1936. Later she was a registered nurse for Dr. Julian Busby in Kannapolis for many years until 1965. She worked for many years at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, now NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, where she retired in 1972 as head nurse. She was also a camp nurse at Cannon Memorial YMCA’s Camp Elliott for several years.

Survivors include husband Clarence C. Barnhardt; sons John Barnhardt, Raleigh, and Calvin Barnhardt, Eden; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Doug Kearney and the Rev. Hoke Ritchie. Entombment, West Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Jackson Street.

Claude W. Bost

Claude W. Bost, 86, Salisbury, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Pearline Watts Boyd

KANNAPOLIS — Pearline Watts Boyd, 82, Big Elm Nursing Center, formerly of Goldfish Road, China Grove, died Wednesday (May 2, 2001) at the nursing center.

Born May 16, 1918, in Pageland, S.C., Mrs. Boyd was a daughter of the late Dave Minor and Annie Leah Knight Watts. She retired from Cannon Mills Co.

Her husband, George Wilbur Boyd, died Feb. 22, 1998.

Survivors include sons George W. Boyd Jr., Iron Station, and Neal Edward Boyd, North Fort Myers, Fla.; sisters Mary Barnhardt, Kannapolis, and Rosie Boyd, China Grove; brothers David Watts, Kannapolis, and Jesse Watts, Lexington; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Duane Holt. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Billy Eugene Carter

The funeral will be Saturday for Billy Eugene Carter, 67, Salisbury, who died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at his home.

Born Nov. 20, 1933, in Rowan County, Mr. Carter, a son of the late Daniel Carl and Hattie Ritchie Carter, was educated at East Hanover High School, Wilmington. He worked as a painter with plant engineering at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

He was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church, where he played guitar.

Survivors include wife Mary Rose Shaver Carter, whom he married Nov. 5, 1955; son Billy Eugene Carter Jr., Granite Quarry; daughter Brenda Carter Stegall, Salisbury; brothers Phillip Carter, Locust, Jimmy Carter, Florida, and Johnny Carter, Salisbury; sisters Myrtle Moore, Haverstown, Md., Judy Watkins, Spencer, and Patricia Carter, Salisbury; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m Saturday, First Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Johnny Locklear, pastor, and the Rev. Gene Allen, assistant pastor. Entombment, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Ralph K. Freeman

KANNAPOLIS — Ralph Kenneth Freeman, 70, 2515 Forestbrook Drive, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born May 14, 1930, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Freeman was a son of the late William Anderson and Ella Mae Sims Freeman. He was involved in auto sales for 51 years and owned and operated Central Carolina Auto Sales and Leasing, Kannapolis. A veteran, he had served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include wife Priscilla “Pat” Godwin Freeman; children Michael Freeman, Gregory Dale Belk, Tamara Rolla, all of Landis, Monty Freeman and Jeffrey Baucom, both of Kannapolis; and Derek Baucom, China Grove; brother Robert Anderson Freeman, Kannapolis; sisters Juanita F. Bennett and Ruth F. Hendrick, both of Mooresville, Lois F. Barbee, Harrisburg, and Brenda F. Addison and Phyllis F. Baucom, both of Kannapolis; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Central Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Forestbrook Drive.

Floyd Graham

MOUNT ULLA — Floyd Graham, 60, 650 Graham Road, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at his home.

Lois Mae Harrington

KANNAPOLIS —Lois Mae Weaver Harrington, 79, 805 S. Highland Ave., died April 20, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born May 23, 1921, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Hiram and Rosa Keller Weaver. Retired from Cannon Mills Co., she was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church.

Her first husband, William D. Melton, died Jan. 15, 1970.

Survivors include husband Claude Harrington; son William H. Melton; and a granddaughter.

Services:11 a.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Coy Privette. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

LEXINGTON — Elizabeth Huffman Harris, 79, Hemstead St., died Thursday (May 3, 2001).

Virginia Lee Hartsell

CHINA GROVE — Virginia Lee Hartsell, 65, China Grove, formerly of Wilkes County, died Tuesday (May 1, 2001) at her home.

Born Feb. 8, 1936, in Wilkes County, Mrs. Hartsell was a daughter of the late Franklin and Cloie Rena Jenkins Royal.

Survivors include brothers Oscar Royal, McGrady, and Roy Royal, North Wilkesboro; and sisters Frances Bare, Laurel Springs, Ann Woodie, Warrensville, Bertha Sheets, McGrady, and Shirley Ward, Millers Creek.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Antioch Baptist Church, McGrady, conducted by the Rev. Tom Graybeal and the Rev. Jerry Roten.

Edgar Cecil Morton

ALBEMARLE — Edgar Cecil Morton, 84, 24230 St. Martin Road, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at his home.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on St. Martin Road.

 

Elby Eugene Price

LANDIS — Elby Eugene Price, 85, 1215 S. Poplar St., died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at his home.

Born Feb. 16, 1916, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Price was a son of the late James Pinkney and Margaret Wright Price. A charter member of Jackson Park United Methodist Church, he was active in various committees and was chairperson of many.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army 25th Infantry in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW Poston Perkins Post 8989.

Retired, he was manager of the Cash and Carry department of Associated Grocery Mutual, Charlotte. He had also worked for Independent Wholesale Grocery in Kannapolis.

Survivors include wife Hazeleen Correll Price; daughters Rosemary Price Hill, Rougemont, and Beth Farmer, Landis; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Jackson Park United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Skipper Watwood and the Rev. Abe Cox. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove.

James Antoine Price

The funeral will be Saturday for James Antoine Price, 20, 2726 Goodnight Road, who died Tuesday (May 1, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Elder Richard Johnson. Burial, Miller’s Chapel AME Zion Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

Sherry Efird Rumple

The funeral will be Saturday for Sherry Efird Rumple, 44, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (May 1, 2001) at her home.

Born Sept. 7, 1956, in Stanly County, Mrs. Rumple was the daughter of Martha Nickelson Efird Eslow, Holly Ridge, and Harvol Max Efird, Cheraw, S.C.

She was a graduate of Southwest Cabarrus High School. She was a homemaker and was a Jehovah’s Witness.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include fiancee Ralph Christie Jr., Salisbury; stepfather Charles Eslow, Holly Ridge; daughters Shannon Rumple, Salisbury, and Christina Rumple, Kannapolis; brothers Wade Efird, Cheraw, S.C., and Darrell Efird, Wallace, S.C.; and sister Cindy Efird Ramsey, Spring City, Pa.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Saturday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Ruth Lenger, pastor, Spencer Presbyterian Church, Spencer.

Visitation: 11:30a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday,Lyerly Funeral Home.

 

Ruth Sherrill

KANNAPOLIS — Ruth Sherrill, 92, 3005 N. Main St., died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at Autumn Care Nursing Center, Salisbury, after four weeks of serious illness.

Born Sept. 20, 1908, in Rowan County, Mrs. Sherrill was a daughter of the late Avery and Florence Emily Partee Sherrill. She was educated at Sandy Ridge Church School and Livingstone College.

Retired, she had worked in home care in Mount Vernon, N.Y., and at the Kannapolis YMCA. She was a life member of Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, where she was in the choir, the missionary choir, the adult missionary group and stewardess board 2. She was also involved with the China Grove Nutrition Site.

Survivors include son Milton Lewis Sherrill, Mount Vernon, N.Y.; and sister Maurice S. Black, Kannapolis.

Dennis Wayne Sloan

Dennis Wayne Sloan, 47, 6921 Meade St., Apt. Z, Pittsburgh, Pa., died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa., after several days of illness.

Born July 29, 1952, in Salisbury, Mr. Sloan was a son of Floyd A. and Geraldine Hawkins Sloan of Salisbury. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School, East Spencer, N.C.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brothers Floyd A. Sloan Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Darryl Sloan, Kannapolis; and sisters Joan Huntley and Mary Tabor, both of Atlanta, Ga.

Lillian Culbreth Thorne

SPINDALE — Lillian Culbreth Thorne, 79, 308 Power St., died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at White Oak Manor, Rutherfordton.

Mrs. Thorne was the mother of Dorma Lee Martin of Salisbury.

Services: Memorial service at 7 tonight, Spencer Baptist Church. Burial, Sunset Memorial Park, Forest City.

Visitation: At the church following the service.

Marco A. Vargas

SPENCER — Marco A. Vargas, 61, Spencer, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at his home after a year of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born May 3, 1940, in Puerto Rico, Mr.. Vargas was a son of Carmen Schevarhfkopffhe, Puerto Rico, and the late Francisco Vargas Jimenez . He was educated at the University of Central Bayamon, the University of Puerto Rico and Library University.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he had served in the Vietnam War. He was a professor of math and criminology at Catawba college and was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Camelia Quintana Vargas; daughters Migdalia Echevarria, Salisbury, Milagres Vargas, Puerto Rico, and Marian Vargas, Chicago, Ill.; and brother Francisco Vargas Vargas, Puerto Rico.

Graveside services were held at 11 this morning at the National Cemetery in Salisbury. John Davis officiated. Military rites were by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: None.
