Onnie Owen Bonds

KANNAPOLIS — Onnie Owen Bonds, 87, Universal Health Care of Concord, formerly of Richard Avenue, died Friday (March 30, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord. She had been declining in health for four months and seriously ill for one week.

Mrs. Bonds was born Dec. 19, 1913, daughter of the late Scott Lee and Julia Walters Owen. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, J. Doyle Bonds, died in March 1992.

Survivors include daughters Maxine Beck of Orlando, Fla., and Melvena Bonds of Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday at Lady’s Funeral Home, led by the Rev. Dr. Rick Felts. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

 

Eugene Clyde Brooks

OAKBORO — Eugene Clyde Brooks, 63, 314 W. Eighth St., died Friday (March 30, 2001) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

He was the son of Odessa Ledbetter Brooks and the brother of Jessie W. Brooks, both of Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday at Hartsell Funeral Home, led by Douglas Fincher.

Visitation: 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at his home.

 

James Edward Clay Jr.

CONCORD — James Edward Clay Jr., 57, 298 Linden Ave., died Thursday (March 29, 2001) at his home.

Mr. Clay was born Dec. 27, 1943, in Cabarrus County, the son of Juanita Clay of Concord and the late James Edward Clay. He was a driver for Terminal Trucking.

Along with his mother, survivors include wife Linda Eudy Clay; sons Michael and Robert Clay, both of Concord; sister Iris Clanton of Cleveland; brothers Gerald Wayne Clay of Concord and Tony Clay of Salisbury; sister Frances Rowland of Concord; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday at East Bethel Baptist Church, led by the Rev. Winfred Kimball, the Rev. James Shoemaker, the Rev. David Beaver and the Rev. Fred Freeman. Burial at West Concord Cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord.

Marie Cline Coleman

KANNAPOLIS — Marie Annie Cline Coleman, 56, 6227 Old Concord/Salisbury Road, died Thursday (March 29, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.

Mrs. Coleman was born Nov. 9, 1944, in Cabarrus County, daughter of Willie Edwards Cline of Kannapolis and the late Charles J. Cline. She graduated from the Winecoff schools. She was a receptionist with Cabarrus Health Alliance and a member of Truth Temple Church.

In addition to her mother, survivors include sons Mike Howard of China Grove and Eddie Howard of Lancaster, S.C., and a grandson.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday at Truth Temple, led by the Rev. Garland Faw and the Rev. Joel Fowler. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove. The remainder of the time, the family will be at the home of her mother at 6241 Old Concord/Salisbury Road.

Stella Berrie Everhart

LEXINGTON — Stella Berrie Everhart, 94, formerly of Britthaven of Davidson, died Thursday (March 29, 2001) at the Brian Center.

Services: 11 a.m. today at Piedmont Funeral Home, led by the Rev. Jay Whitley. Burial at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Joseph Charles Miller

Joseph Charles Miller, 74, 712 Grace St., died Wednesday (March 28, 2001) at Brian Nursing Center after declining in health for two years.

Mr. Miller was born Jan. 4, 1927, son of the late William and Etta Jane McHenry Miller. A graduate of J.C. Price High School and A&T State University, he had retired from the school system in Elizabeth, N.J. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church and J.C. Price American Legion Post 107.

He was preceded in death by wife Mary Catherine Jones Miller.

Survivors include daughters Carolyn Miller McNeil of Raleigh and Paulette Miller Lewis of Greensboro; brother Leroy “Pop” Miller of Charlotte; and sisters Marie Miller Burney of Winston-Salem and Anne Miller Billingsley of Atlanta.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church, led by the Rev. T. Anthony Speraman, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home.

 

Nancy W. Sink

KANNAPOLIS — Nancy Gibson Williamson Sink, 85, 415 Peach St., died at her home Friday (March 30, 2001) after declining in health for three years and being seriously ill for seven months.

Mrs. Sink was born Sept. 15, 1915, in Chesterfield County, S.C., daughter of the late Doc Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Davis Gibson. She was employed with Cannon Mills Co. for 3212 years before her retirement in 1978. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, where she was active in circle work.

Survivors include husband Herbert William Sink; son John Franklin Williamson of Goldsboro; sister Lela Mae Rollins of Ruby, S.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday at Whitley’s Funeral Home, led by the Rev. Brant Piper. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Ruby Leverett White

Ruby Mae Leverett White, 81, 616 Hawkinstown Road, died Wednesday (March 27, 2001) at the North Carolina Nursing Center in Salisbury.

Mrs. White was born May 28, 1919, in Lincolnton, Ga., the daughter of the late Rev. John Thomas and Josephine Freeman Leverett. She graduated from Dunbar High School in Lexington and Russell Commercial Business College in Winston-Salem.

She had retired as an instructor for the New York State Food on the Table program. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where her late husband, the Rev. Reid Ross White, had served as pastor. She was a consecrated deaconess and church missionary during her husband’s service.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Dr. William Milton White.

Survivors include four sons, the Rev. Reid Ross White Jr. of Columbia, S.C., the Rev., Edward Leroy White of Meriden, Conn., John Henry White of Chicago and Dr. James Robert White of Charlotte; a daughter, the Rev. Ada Taylor of Salisbury; a brother, the Rev. Robert Leonard Leverett of Newark, N.J.; and sisters Mary Ann Terry of Lexington and Blanche Olivia Leverett of Newark, N.J.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, led by the Rev. Dr. Murray Edwards. Burial at Forest Hill Cemetery in Lexington.

Visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home.

Judith Griffin Wilcox

KANNAPOLIS — Judith Elaine Griffin Wilcox, 56, 814 Carolyn Ave., died at her home Friday (March 30, 2001).

Mrs. Wilcox was born Oct. 12, 1944, in Cabarrus County, daughter of the late Robert Blair and Naomi Godfrey Griffin. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include husband Larry W. Wilcox; son Glenn Wilcox of the home; daughter Angela Deese of Salisbury; sisters Diane Lee and Janet Griffin, both of Kannapolis; brother Bobby Griffin of Kannapolis; and two grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. today at Whitley’s Funeral Home, led by the Rev. Dr. James Strickland. Burial at Sunset Cemetery.

Visitation: 3 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

 

Lonnie James Wise

Lonnie James Wise, 69, 2450 Grace Church Road, died Friday (March 30, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 15, 1932, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Evan Johnsie Broadway and Henry Franklin Wise. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a retired postal employee. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean conflict.

His wife, Shirley Sechler Wise, died Sept. 12, 1995.

Survivors include daughter Wendy Trayah of Salisbury; brother Walter Wise of China Grove; sister Margaret Arlene Wise of China Grove; and two grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday at Grace Lutheran Church, led by the Rev. Woodrow Frick. Entombent at West Lawn Mausoleum, China Grove, with military rites by the Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.
