CONCORD — Officials identified a man who died in a plane crash early Friday as a 51-year-old pilot who worked for a courier service Lincoln County.
Ronald Lee Dolan crashed the plane in a field less than a mile north of Concord Regional Airport as he approached for a landing just after 6 a.m.
Emergency services workers said Dolan’s address is 530 Airport Road, McHenry, Md. “He flies in and out of here all the time,”said Concord Aviation Director John Crosby said.
Dolan flew for Corporate Air Fleet of Lincolnton. Around 6 a.m. Friday, he was approaching Concord Regional while communicating with air-traffic controllers at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
Charlotte lost contact with Dolan at 6:08 a.m. A few minutes later, an alert went out from Concord Regional. A search ended when officials found the single-engine Piper Lance in a field off Cessna Drive.
Dolan, who delivered checks for the courier service, was the only person on board the plane.
The plane clipped some power lines and crashed near a tree line in the field near Odell School Road. The field lies between some houses and the Vulcan Materials quarry.
Dolan’s body was taken to NorthEast Medical Center for an autopsy, Crosby said.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
