Good dirt the best way to plant

Kindergartener Rebekah Cale gleefully dumps her load of mulch.

ROCKWELL — From the looks on their faces, you can tell that Leslie Hunsucker’s kindergarten students loved this particular assignment.

For months, the students and Hunsucker have been talking about sprucing up the grounds at Rockwell Elementary. They got the idea from reading about another student planting project in the Post.

“At first, we were going to do something outside our window with bird feeders,” Hunsucker said. Then, parents Scott and Gina Starnes, Thorlo and Nazareth Children’s Home donated supplies. The students ended up with three large flower boxes, benches and a bird bath. And they’re waiting for a weather station, another donation from the Starneses.

The fun part for the kids was filling the boxes with dirt, plants and mulch. Rain didn’t stop them. They just used baby wipes and towels.

The Starneses, Hunsucker’s husband, Rocky, and her father, Rick Thibodeau, also joined the fun.
