Kannapolis water concerns topic of meetings

BY SCOTT JENKINS
SALISBURY POST

KANNAPOLIS — City officials invite businesses to attend one of two meetings this week to discuss water-use restrictions and business owners’ concerns about them.

The city remains mired in a three-year drought — the driest spell in 50 years — and is under mandatory water conservation. As temperatures climb, city leaders become more concerned that the state will recommend a higher level of restrictions for commercial and industrial water customers.

At that level, businesses would be required to reduce water consumption by 25, 50 or 75 percent.

“If we get rain and conservation efforts keep reducing water consumption rates, we may get through the spring and summer without further restrictions,” Mayor Ray Moss wrote in inviting businesses to meet with the city.

A meeting Wednesday will focus on car washes, car dealerships, landscapers, restaurants, nurseries, garden centers and other large-volume water users.

On Thursday, city officials will address nursing homes, schools, apartment complexes, multi-family units and institutional water users.

The meetings will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. each day at the Cannon Village Visitors Center, 200 West Ave.
