The Oldsmobile Scramble is returning to Crescent Golf Club in May, and pro Ross Desmond is expecting a big turnout.
“I’m just really excited about getting it back again,” said Desmond. “We’ve got the commitment from Team Chevrolet and Tom Dillard. Our goal this year is obviously to make it the largest in the state of North Carolina.”
Crescent had 92 players (23 teams) in its tournament last spring, with three teams advancing to the sectional level. The largest Oldsmobile Scramble in the state in 2000 had 108 golfers.
“We’ve got to build 16 new players into it from last year to be able to get to the 108 mark.I would love to have 120 players,” Desmond said of the event scheduled for May 26.
“I still can’t believe what you pay and what you get. It’s unbelievable,” he added.
The individual entry fee of $50 entitles a golfer to the round of golf, cart fee, range balls, a dozen Strata golf balls and a $500 Oldsmobile purchase incentive. All participants are eligible to receiver either a $25 or $50 golf shop certificate.
There are gross and net divisions.
Teams of amateurs are formed using the Oldsmobile Scramble handicap system. All participants must have a valid USGA handicap index.

SCRUGGS TOURNEY: When the Ryan Scruggs Open was played at McCanless Golf Club on St. Patrick’s Day, Ryan Scruggs wanted to be a part of the tournament honoring him.
So, the West Rowan High School 15-year-old student teamed up with Seth Waller, Chris McDaniel, Evan Myers and Travis Kluttz, walked 18 holes and helped his team take first place with a 7-under-par 63 score.
Scruggs, who plays football, basketball and baseball, suffered head injuries in a four-wheeler accident in January. He spent a month at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem before being released earlier this month.
Kris Bailey, Justin Edgell and Coleman Pits tied for first place in the best-putt contest.
