Minnie ‘Granny’ Bush
LINWOOD — The funeral will be Friday for Minnie
Josephine “Granny” Hargrave Bush, 87, Belmont Road, who died Saturday (March
17, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Born March 14, 1914, in Davidson County, Mrs.
Bush was a daughter of the late Henderson “Hence” and Blanche Roberts
Hargrave. She retired from Hoover Furniture Manufacturing.
A life member of Old Smith Grove View Baptist
Church, she was a former president of the Usher Board, a deaconess, church
treasurer, a member of the kitchen committee and the senior citizens club.
Survivors include son John “Hence’ Hargrave,
of the home; daughters Rebecca “Becky” Gill,Salisbury, and Barbara Ruth
McDowell, Linwood; stepdaughters Jessie Baker and Lucille Wilson, both of
Lexington, Doris Hargrave, Warren, Ohio, and Lois Knootz, Greensboro; foster
children Shirleen Taylor and Teresa Redfern, both of Charlotte, Harry Taylor and
Rosa Taylor, both of Darlington, S.C., and Irene Wright, Baltimore, Md.
Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Old Smith Grove View

John Cason
NEW LONDON — John “Johnny Boy” Cason, 67,
40557 Barnhardt Road, died Tuesday (March 20, 2001) at Carolinas Medical Center,
Charlotte.
Born Nov. 22, 1933, in Stanly County, Mr. Cason
was a son of the late Lucy Phillip and Florence Carpenter Cason. He was educated
in the Stanly County schools and a graduate of North Carolina Central State
University, Durham, and nursing school in Washington, D.C. He also attended
Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer.
A former teacher in the public schools in
Washington, D.C., and Stanly County, he earlier worked as a nurse. He was a
member of Annunciation Catholic Church, Albemarle.
Survivors include brother Joseph Cason, Silver
Springs, Md.

Hearlee ‘Pop’ Lambert
KANNAPOLIS — Hearlee “Pop” Lambert, 84,
1617 Azalea Ave., died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at his home after two years of
declining health.
Born May 14, 1916, in Alexander County, Mr.
Lambert was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tobe Lambert. He retired in 1980 from
CannonMills Co. plant 4 weave room after 48 years. He was a member of Shiloh
United Methodist Church, Concord.
His wife, Viola Rodgers Lambert, preceded him in
death.
Survivors include sons David L. Lambert, Concord,
and Jerry W. Lambert, Kannapolis; daughter Patsy L. Davis, Concord; six
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

LEXINGTON — Julie Elizabeth Bartrug Lovelace,
28, 204 Oakwood Drive, died Tuesday (March 20, 2001) at Forsyth Memorial
Hospital, Winston-Salem.
Born Dec. 24, 1972, in Portland, Ore., Mrs.
Lovelace was a daughter of Laural Ann Roach Bartrug and the daughter and
stepdaughter of Barry Lee and Teresa Bartrug, Linwood. She was employed by
Lexington Home Brands.
Survivors, in addition to her parents and
stepmother, include fiance Mark Anthony Lyons, of the home; daughter Amanda Ann

Peggy Gaskey Perry
Peggy Gaskey Perry, 58, Salisbury, died Tuesday
(March 20, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining
health.
Born Dec. 16, 1942, in Rowan County, Mrs. Perry
was a daughter of Lewis W. Gaskey, Salisbury, and the late Annie Bradshaw Gaskey.
She was educated in the Rowan County schools. A homemaker, she was a Lutheran.
Her husband, George Floyd Perry, died Aug. 4,
1999.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include
daughter Sherry Milam, Sutherlin, Va.; brother Robert Eugene Gaskey, Salisbury;
sister Jeanette Harrison,Salisbury; two grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS — Eugene Furtches Russell, 89, 514
W. Seventh St., died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at Maple Leaf Healthcare,
Statesville.
Born Jan. 4, 1912, in Iredell County, Mr. Russell
was a son of the late Martin Luther and Lula Bell Bass Russell. He retired after
58 years from CannonMills roller shop. He attended North Kannapolis Baptist
Church.
Survivors include wife Margaret Leona Cates
Russell; daughters Wanda R. Bonds, Charlotte, Barbara Jean Johnson, Enochville,
and Sandra Kay Cline, Kannapolis; sisters Stella Greenway, Edenton, Ga., Helen

Charlie David Shepherd
The funeral will be Friday for Charlie David
Shepherd, 74, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at his home.
Born Oct. 22, 1926, in Rowan County, Mr.
Shepherd, a son of the late Charlie Calvin and Grace Smith Shepherd, was a 1944
graduate of Rockwell High School.
Employed by Hendrick-Fowler Motor Co. for 24
years, he retired as a maintenance mechanic from Alcoa Aluminum in 1986.
He was a lifetime member of St. Matthew’s
Lutheran Church and a former member of the church council. A former Scoutmaster
of Troop 333, he had been a member of Pooletown Volunteer Fire Department and
Rowan County School Board. He was also a member of South Lexington Bass Masters
Club.
Survivors include wife Ruby Inez Shepherd, whom
he married Feb. 1, 1947; sons Larry and Sammy Shepherd, both of Salisbury;
daughter Shelia Shepherd, Salisbury; brothers Albert and Ralph Shepherd, both of
Salisbury; sister Elizabeth S. File, Salisbury; and four grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, St. Matthew’s Lutheran
Church, conducted by the Rev. Bill Jeffcoat. The body will be placed in the
church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Robert Brooks Smarr
Robert Brooks Smarr, 65, Salisbury, died Monday
(March 20, 2001) at Hefner VA Medical Center.
Born Dec. 12, 1935, in Salisbury, Mr. Smarr, a
son of the late Brooks and Aslee Thompson Smarr, was a graduate of Price High
School.He served in the U.S. Air Force from July 26, 1954, until Jan. 25, 1958.
He later worked at Catawba College, Cone Mills and Hefner VA Medical Center.
Survivors include sisters Barbara Ann Gaul,
Salisbury, and Mozell Smarr Kelsey, Concord.
