Minnie Hargrave Bush
LINWOOD — Minnie “Granny” Hargrave Bush,
87, 561 Helmont Road, died Saturday (March 17, 2001) at Lexington Memorial
Hospital.
Mrs. Bush was born March 14, 1914, in Davidson
County.
Survivors include son John “Hence” Hargrave,
of the home; daughters Rebecca “Becky” Hargrave Gill, Salisbury, and Barbara
Ruth “Bob” Hargrave McDowell, Linwood.

George Jay Holder
ALBEMARLE — George Jay Holder, 74, 24165 N.C.
73, died Sunday (March 18, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born May 16, 1926, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Holder
was a retired fixer and sawmiller. He last worked for Cannon Mills.
He was an avid Earnhardt racing fan and grew up
with Ralph Earnhardt in Kannapolis. In the 1950s and ’60s, he worked as a race
car and engine builder with the team .
Mr. Holder served in the U.S. Navy during World
War II and was assigned to the Pacific Theater.
Survivors include a half-sister, Johnsie Auten,
Concord.

Glenn Lee Jones
KANNAPOLIS — Glenn Lee Jones Sr., 80, 2006
Carolina Ave., died Sunday (March 18, 2001) at Universal Health Care, Concord.
Born July 28, 1920, in Catawba County, he was a
son of the late G. Lonnie and Lucy Beal Jones. During World War II, Mr Jones
worked in Baltimore, Md., building aircraft as a welder. Later, he owned and
operated Jackson Park Supply, Kannapolis, for 50 years until his retirement in
2000. He had also worked for Cannon Mills Co. He was a member of First Baptist
Church.
Survivors include wife Kathleen Horton Jones;
sons R. Larry Jones, Rockwell, Glenn Lee Jones Jr., Gastonia, Tracy Lee and
Jerry Alan Jones, both of Kannapolis; brother Ben Jones, Kannapolis; sisters
Margaret Caine, High Point, Cleo Johnson, Winston-Salem, and Shirley Grould,
Brevard; four grandchildren; and two great-great -grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral

SPENCER — Sandra Bennett Null, 42, 616 Meadow
Ave., died Sunday (March 18, 2001) at her home.

Leona Mesimer Taylor
ROCKWELL — Leona Mesimer Taylor, 92, died
Sunday (March 18, 2001) at The Meadows.
Born Jan. 7, 1909, in Rowan County, she was a
daughter of the late Luther and Martha Ellen Holshouser Mesimer.
A graduate of Rockwell High School, she spent two
years at Lenoir-Rhyne College. She was a homemaker and did substitute teaching
at Rockwell Elementary School.
A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the
WELCA, she taught Sunday school for 40 years and served as choir director for 50
years. A member of the Rockwell Home Demonstration Club, she was active in the
Republican party and Republican Women.
Her husband, Gurley Franklin Taylor, died April
27, 1997. A son, Gregory C. Taylor, died Oct. 8, 1986.
Survivors include son Larry J. Taylor, Nashville,
Tenn.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Leona B. Long Tissue
MOUNT PLEASANT — Leona B. Long Tissue, 86,
28731 Rowland Road, died Saturday (March 17, 2001) at Care Bridge Assisted
Living, Mount Pleasant.
Born Feb. 20, 1915, in Branson, Mo., she was a
daughter of the late Tom and Florence Baker Long, she had been a practical
nurse.
Husbands Leslie Baker and Everett Tissue preceded
her in death.
Survivors include son Les Baker, Long Beach,
Calif.; daughter Shirley Mullins, Gastonia; five grandchildren; five
great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great grandchildren.

Bertie Smith Dennard
KANNAPOLIS — Bertie Smith Dennard, 93, formerly
of Kannapolis, died Friday (March 16, 2001) in Black Mountain at the home of a
granddaughter.
She had lived with her daughter, Doris Arnold, in
Fairview.
Born July 26, 1907 in Royston, Ga., she was a
daughter of the late William Bowers and Jessie Bonds Smith.
She retired from the spinning room of Cannon
Mills Plant 4 in Kannapolis.
Mrs. Dennard had been a member of First Wesleyan
Church for 76 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy
Burt Dennard.
Survivors include daughters Geri Newman and
Margaret Gilbert, both of Denver, Colo., and Doris Arnold, Asheville; son Gene
Dennard, Pasadena, Md.; sister Reba Fortner, Concord; brothers, Blanton J.
Smith, Kannapolis, and the Rev. Hoover Smith, Gastonia; 13 grandchildren; 18
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Betty Lucille Shank
RICHFIELD — Betty Lucille Horton Shank, 72,
20221 Bear Creek Church Road, died Sunday, (March 18, 2001) at Stanly Memorial
Hospital, Albemarle.
Born April 8, 1929, in Cabarrus County, she was a
daughter of the late Harry and Pearl Helms Horton. She was a member of Heaven
Bound Independent Baptist Church and retired from Wiscassett Mills.
Her husband, James Ray Shank, preceded her in
death.
Survivors include son Rodney Shank, Albemarle;
daughter Nancy Sanders, Richfield; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Chester Cleave Vaughan
CLEVELAND — Chester Cleave Vaughan, 83, 1070
Rankin Road, died Saturday (March 17, 2001) at his home after a period of
declining health.
Born April 8, 1917, in Bessemer, Ala., he was a
son of the late Coby L. and Hattie Clark Vaughan.
A retired minister, he was a graduate of Knox
Academy, Selma, Ala., and received his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee
A&I University, Nashville, Tenn. His pastorates included Belmont Church of
Christ, Statesville, now known as Highland Acres Church of Christ and other
pastorates in Montgomery, Ala., Nashville, Tenn., Camden, S.C., and Anniston,
Ala. He was a member of Highland Acres Church of Christ and a U.S. Army veteran
of World War II.
Survivors include wife Bessie Stockton Vaughan;
stepsons Willie Henry Neal, Landis, Joseph Neal, Cleveland, and Holland Neal,
Baltimore, Md.; stepdaughters Margaret Reid, Mooresville, Inez Caldwell,
Troutman, Patricia Neely, China Grove, Lorraine Redfern, Oceanside, Calif, Jane
Kellam, Los Angeles, Calif., Jean Rose, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Marie Thomas,
Vineland, N.J.; brother Memphis Vaughan, Mobile, Ala.; sisters Willie Ford,
Marion, Ala., and Coby Wells, Detroit, Mich.; 22 grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
