Maude Poole Brown

Maude Poole Brown, 89, Salisbury, died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 9, 1911, in Rowan County, Mrs. Brown, a daughter of the late Walter Cleveland and Carrie Bame Poole, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s Home Demonstration Club. She was a volunteer in the baked goods division at Rowan County fair and was a judge at area county fairs.

She was preceded in death by her husband,Henderson M. Brown; a son, Clyde William Rash Jr., and a daughter Rebecca Paxton.

Survivors include daughter Jean R. Deal,Salisbury; brother Robert C. Poole, Salisbury; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Carl Sachtleben, pastor, St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.At other times the family will be at the home.

Sybil Ellis Coyer

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Friday for Sybil Ellis Coyer, 65, Rockwell, who died Thursday (March 8, 2001) at Atlantic Beach while on vacation.

Born Sept. 19, 1935, in Wilson, Mrs. Coyer was a daughter of the late Mark and Margaret Woodard Ellis. She was educated in the Wilson County schools and received a degree from Wilson College.

A teacher, she retired from Nazareth Children’s Home. She was a member of Good News Church, Wilson.

Survivors include daughters Kathy Bruce and Karen Coyer, both of Zebulon, and Debbie Springer, Salisbury; brother David Miller, Jefferson; sister Carrie Ellis, Macclesfield; and four grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 7 p.m. Friday, First Baptist Church,Gold Hill, conducted by the Rev. Robert Thawley. Burial was at Good News Church cemetery, Wilson.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home of Debbie Springer, Salisbury, from 10 a.m. -12 p.m. on Friday.

Helen L. Forrest

LINWOOD — Helen Lomax Forrest, 80, Jubilee Road, died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Feb. 6, 1921, in Davidson County, Mrs. Forrest was a daughter of the late Jesse Lee and Roxie Belle Brewer Lomax. She retired from Dixie Furniture Co.,Lexington, and was a member of No Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Her husband, James Alex Forrest, died April 25, 1985.

Survivors include sons Billy G. and Tony R. Forrest, both of Linwood, Churchland community; daughter Doris Forrest West, Winston-Salem; brothers Raymond M. and Howard D. Lomax, both of Salisbury; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, No Creek Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Eugene Bennett. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home,Lexington. At other times the family will be at the home on Jubilee Road.

 

Alice J. Gullett

Alice J. Gullett, 83, Salisbury, died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Rachel Walser Harkey

The funeral will be Friday for Rachel Walser Harkey, 74, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury after six months of serious illness.

Born Feb. 14, 1927, in Rowan County, Mrs. Harkey, a daughter of the late Noah and Ellen Gibson Walser, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She retired from PPG, Lexington, after 20 years and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Spencer.

Her husband, Clifford D. Harkey, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son John James Watson, South Carolina; daughters Billie Jo Harkey Davis and Gail Harkey Jones, both of Salisbury; brother Herman Kenneth Walser, Salisbury; sisters Lula Howard, Salisbury, and Ada Dennis,Churchland; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mark Walton. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Jo Ann Maddry Hess

The funeral will be Saturday for Jo Ann Maddry Hess, 56, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, after three years of declining health.

Born Jan. 19, 1945, in Hamlet, Mrs. Hess, the daughter of the late James Muriel and Faye Greene Maddry, was educated in the Hamlet and Long Island, N.Y., schools. She was a homemaker and member of Maranatha Bible Church.

She was a member and officer of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. An active member of Xi Alpha Delta Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi since 1988, she held the offices of City Council representative and recording secretary. She was voted her chapter’s Valentine Queen and hosted chapter meetings and socials at her home.

Survivors include husband Larry W. Hess, whom she married in June 1969; daughter Chrissy Hess Rape, Monroe; stepsons Larry A. Hess, Newtown, Pa., and Barry E. Hess, Atlanta, Ga.; stepdaughter Cindy L. Fudala, Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers James “Jim” M. Maddry, Gary M. Maddry and Timothy “Tim” W. Maddry, all of Salisbury, William “Bill” E. Maddry, Durham, and David F. Maddry, Long Island, N.Y.; one granddaughter; and nine step-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Phillip McLain, Mountain Springs Baptist Church, Monroe. Members of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Salisbury Lions Club will be seated as a group. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Elizabeth Hinson

NEW LONDON — Elizabeth Gabrial Hinson, 13, 40498 Barnhardt Road, died Monday (March 12, 2001) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born Oct. 8, 1987, in Stanly County, Miss Hinson was a daughter of Dolly Hinson and Roberta Hinson and Kelvin Applerwhite and Vincent Williams. She was a seventh-grade student at Richfield Elementary School, Richfield. A member of First Baptist Church, New London, she attended Sunday school and was a member of the United Gospel Singers.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brothers Christopher Hinson and Dieza Blue, of the home, Tavis Hinson, Badin, Xavier M.Applerwhite, New London, and William Hinson, Polkton; and sisters Adrian Hinson, of the home, Pam Hinson, Charlotte, and Diamond Applerwhite, New London.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church, New London, conducted by the Rev. Donell S.Taylor, pastor, and the Rev.Althea Harris, associate pastor. Burial, Parker’s Cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Inez Howell Lee

NORWOOD — Inez Howell Lee, 95, Norwood, died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at Britthaven-Piedmont Nursing Center, Albemarle.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Stanly Grove Holiness Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church.

James Clyde Reavis

James Clyde Reavis, 85, 218 Ridge Ave., died Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a week of serious illness.

Born Feb. 15, 1916, in Rutherford College, Mr. Reavis, a son of the late Rev. Burley Clyde and Gertha Estelle Cartner Reavis, was educated in the Weaverville, Franklin, Asheboro and Morganton schools and a was graduate of Greensboro High School.

He retired from Mackie Vending Co. and was employed with Summersett Funeral Home before and after his retirement from Mackie’s.

During World War II, he served with the 47th Field Hospital in the European Theatre of Operations. He took part in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded four Bronze Stars while in service.

He was a member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, and was active at his wife’s church, First United Church of Christ.

His first wife, Mildred Benton Reavis, died in 1984.

Survivors include wife Margaret Barnhardt Hoffman Reavis; sons James Clyde Reavis Jr., Atlanta, Ga., and Charles Benton Reavis, Salisbury, Md.; stepson Richard Hoffman, Landis; stepdaughter Brenda Barcel,Cary; brother William Hugh Reavis, Altavista, Va.; sister Pauline Reavis, Raleigh; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Neill Shaw, pastor, Milford Hills United Methodist Church, and the Rev. David Crook, pastor,First United Church of Christ. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
