John Robert Caldwell
MOUNT ULLA —The funeral will be
Friday for John Robert Caldwell, 79, 10080 Caldwell Road, who died Monday (March
12, 2001) at the home of son J.R. Caldwell Jr.
Born July 3, 1921, in Rowan
County, Mr. Caldwell was a son of the late William and Clara Marlin Caldwell. He
graduated from Mount Ulla High School and was a retired dairy farmer.
He was a member of Thyatira
Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a treasurer and deacon. He served
with the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was a member of the National
Rifleman’s Association.
Survivors, in addition to his
son, include wife Thelma Blackwelder Caldwell; daughter Terry Bentley, Tyler,
Texas; sisters Elizabeth Currie,Red Springs, Mary Anna Lingle, Charlottesville,
Va., and Sarah Ruth Brown, Troutman; and seven grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday,
Thyatira Presbyterian CHurch, Mill Bridge, conducted by Dr. O. Leighton Culler.
Burial, church cemetery. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Hairston, 28, 1712 Bringle Ferry Road, died Saturday (March 10, 2001) at Rowan
Regional Medical Center after a period of illness.
Born Aug. 21, 1972, in Salisbury,
Miss Hairston was a daughter of Johnnie Mae Imes Hairston and Thaniel Lee
Hairston, both of Salisbury. She was a graduate of North Rowan High School,
Spencer, and attended New Hope AME Zion Church.
A daughter, Tiara Hairston, died
Oct. 8, 1996.
Survivors, in addition to her
parents, include daughter Jatyra B. Jones, of the home; brother Thaniel Lee
Hairston Jr., Salisbury; sister LaTasha Pharr, Salisbury; paternal grandmother
Frances Hairston, Lexington; maternal grandparents Grace and Bernice Imes,
Salisbury; maternal great-grandmother Anna J. Woods, Salisbury; and paternal
great-grandmother Vinnie Click, Lexington.

77, 800 E. 22nd St., died Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at her home.
Born July 4, 1923, in Cabarrus
County, Mrs. Jones was a daughter of the late Curtis M. and Kitty Sechler Linn.
She was a member of Rodgers Park United Church of Christ.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, she
served during World War II. She retired from Hefner VA Medical Center,
Salisbury.
Survivors include husband
E.R.Jones; son Larry Jones, Mooresville; daughter Victoria J. Armes,
Mooresville; brother Robert Linn, Concord; three grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.

Bertie Casper Kepley
Bertie Casper Kepley, 87,
Salisbury, died Monday (March 12, 2001) at Wesley Long Nursing Center,
Jamestown, after a brief illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1913, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Kepley was a daughter of the late Andrew and Nannie Mae Cauble
Casper. She was educated at China Grove Farm Life School. In 1971, she retired
as a weaver from Cannon Mills after 45 years. She attended Park Avenue United
Methodist Church.
Her husband, Dewey L. Kepley,
died July 9, 1971.
Survivors include daughter
Novella K. Beck, Greensboro; sister Pearl C. Binns, Salisbury; two
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: Private graveside
services will be held on Saturday at Rowan Memorial Park. The Rev. Tommy Conder,
pastor, Park Avenue United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Jane Turner Laughridge, of
Wilson, formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (March 12, 2001).
Survivors include husband Palmer
G. Laughridge Jr., Wilson; son Palmer G. Laughridge III, Wilson; daughter Martha
L. Geitner, Asheville; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 10
this morning at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Wilson. The Rev. Blair Both
officiated. Burial will be private.

Joseph E. McHone
KANNAPOLIS — Joseph Earnest
McHone, 78, 107 Crescent St., died Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at NorthEast Medical
Center, Concord, after seven months of declining health and two months of
serious illness.
Born Nov. 27, 1922, in Danville,
Va., Mr. McHone, a son of the late Newell Bryson and Savannah Bolt McHone,
retired after 40 years from Cannon Mills Plant 4 weave room. He later worked as
a greeter at Wal-Mart, Kannapolis, for seven years. He was a member of Brookdale
Baptist Church.
He served with the U.S. Marine
Corps during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 51, where he
was commander in 1990, 1991 and 1992.
He was preceded in death by wife,
Louise Kearns McHone, and a daughter, Jane McHone Hilton.
Survivors include daughter Vicky
M. Donehue, Kannapolis; stepdaughter Caroline Z. Shepherd, Concord; stepson
Michael Zanation, Mount Pleasant; six grandchildren; and one
great-granddaughter.
