Boyce Glenn Bowles

CONCORD — Boyce Glenn Bowles, 88, 3120 Penninger Road, died Friday (March 9, 2001) at the Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born April 5, 1912, in Davie County, he was a son of the late John and Lydia James Bowles. A retired farmer, he had also retired from Brown Mill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

His wife, Sadie R. Bowles preceded him in death.

Survivors include sister Eva Smith of Mooresville.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, graveside, Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis, with the Rev. Daniel Jarstfer officiating.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wilkinson’s Funeral Home.

 

David Larry Brewer Jr

David Larry Brewer Jr., 28, U.S. Highway 29, Lot 31, Frank’s Trailer Park, died Saturday (March 10, 2001) at his home.

Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is handling arrangements.

 

Coleen Howell Dull

MOCKSVILLE — Coleen Howell Dull, 68, N.C. Highway 801 North, died Saturday (March 10, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

She was the wife of the late Floyd Vestal Dull.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Raul Gilolardo Gelpi

KANNAPOLIS — Raul Gilolardo Gelpi, 87, formerly of 524 Eastway Ave., died Friday (March 9, 2001) at his daughter’s home at 1190 Roy Cline Road.

Born June 8, 1913, in Tanamo, Cuba, he was a son of the late Feliciano and Anna Jardines Gelpi. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

His wife, Blanche L. Ramirez Gelpi, died Feb. 3, 2000.

Survivors include sons Raul G. Gelpi Jr. and Rene Gelpi; daughters Ana Gelpi de Ramirez and Margarita Gross; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. today, Whitley’s Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joseph Gorney officiating. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Margarita Gross on Roy Cline Road.

 

Donna ‘Chris’ Hatoway

Donna Christine “Chris” Hatoway, 46, Salisbury, died Friday (March 9, 2001) at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. She had been in declining health for the past 14 months.

Born Oct. 22, 1954, in Cumberland County, she was the daughter of Richard and Ruth Furr Hatoway, with whom she made her home. A graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, she was a social worker with the Rowan County Department of Social Services. She was a member of Boulevard Chapel in Kannapolis.

Survivors include daughter Jannese Castor, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and brothers Wayne Hatoway, Greenfield, Ind., and David Furr, Madison, Ala..

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Pearlie Peterson, pastor of Boulevard Chapel, and the Rev. Carol Jackson. Burial at Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1:30 to 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

James Kenneth Krentz

CHINA GROVE — James Kenneth Krentz, 67, 311 Millbridge Circle, died Friday (March 9, 2001) at his residence.

Born May 7, 1933, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was a son of the late Mable Elvers and Harry Krentz. A graduate of Orchard Park High School, Orchard Park, N.Y., he had retired as an auto sales manager. Mr. Krentz was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Charlotte.

Survivors include wife Mildred Dickson Krentz; a son, James Krentz Jr., of Murrysville, Pa.; daughters Marsha Costuros, Cheektowaga, N.Y., and Wendy Krentz, Webster, N.Y.; brother William Krentz, Reno, Nev.; sisters Norene Muffoletto, Bellview, Fla., and Elizabeth McCuen, Buffalo, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.

Services: A memorial service will be held at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

 

Helen Beach Lentz

Helen Beach Lentz, 79, Salisbury, died Friday (March 9, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born on May 27, 1921, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Nora Mays and Charles Oscar Beach. A 1938 graduate of Hickory High School, she had also attended Lenoir-Rhyne College and Catawba College.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Eva Peeler Sunday School Class and WELCA. She was also a member of the Golden Opportunity Club and the Busy Bee Club at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.

Survivors include husband Cullen Roscoe Lentz, whom she married Nov. 30, 1939; and a daughter, Ava Lentz Turner of Charlotte.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl R. Sachtleben, pastor, and the Rev. Jennifer Ginn, assistant pastor. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: At the church after the memorial service. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Memorials: St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St., Salisbury, NC 28144.

 

Annie Basinger Lyerly

CHINA GROVE — Annie Ruth Basinger Lyerly, 75, 201 Old Rockwell Road, died Thursday (March 8, 2001) at Northeast Medical Center in Concord. She had been in declining health for several months.

Born May 12, 1925, in China Grove, she was a daughter of the late Carl Lee and Ruth Sides Basinger. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she had worked for 19 years in the sheet department at Cannon Mills.

She and her husband, Leon Brown “Pud” Lyerly, also operated Lyerly Fish and Steak House. Her husband died Feb. 25, 1988, after 26 years of marriage.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in China Grove, where she was president of the Young at Heart group and a member of the Nora Dayvault Circle.

Survivors include stepdaughters Kay Lyerly, Atlanta, Joyce Hunter, Kannapolis, and Ginger Webster, Corolla; brothers Charlie and Harold J. Basinger, both of China Grove; sister Joanna Elmore, Kannapolis; four step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rusty Inman and the Rev. Kristin Lassiter. Burial in Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Memorials: First United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 110 Church St., China Grove, NC 28023.

 

Sue Burris Poplin

OAKBORO — Sue Burris Poplin, 63, 20321 Highway 24/27, died Friday (March 9, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.

Born March 19, 1937, in Stanly County, she was a daughter of Faye S. Burris of Oakboro and the late James Claude Burris. Retired after 2912 years as an insurance underwriter, she was later employed at Arc of Stanly County. Mrs. Poplin was a member of Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Jimmy H. Poplin; a son, Buddy Poplin, Albemarle; a daughter, Kelly P. Eudy, Oakboro; a brother, Clayton Burris, Oakboro; a sister, Judy Love, Garden City, S.C.; and five grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle. Burial at Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials: National Kidney Foundation, 5970 Fairview Road, Suite 408, Charlotte, NC 28210.

 

James Ralph Ruff

KANNAPOLIS — James Ralph Ruff, 70, died at his home Friday (March 9, 2001).

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Andrew Threadgill

Andrew Threadgill, 75, 1116 N. Church St., died Friday (March 9, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.
