Doris Hoover Douglas

Doris Jean Hoover Douglas, 74, 107 Hawkins Ave., died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

She was born Aug. 22, 1926, in Rowan County, the daughter of the late Raymond and Azree Headen Hoover. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a nurse’s aide.

She was a member of Dorsett Chapel United Church of Christ, where she was active with the Senior Missionary Circle, the Senior Choir, the Gospel Choir and the Trustee Board. She was a former lead singer with the Macedonia Jubilee Chorus.

Mrs. Douglas was preceded in death by her husband, James Douglas, and a son, Leroy Douglas.

Survivors include a son, James “J.C.” Douglas, Salisbury; a foster sister, Ruby Williams of Kissimmee, Fla.; a granddaughter, Angela Douglas, who was reared in the home; four other grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Dorsett Chapel United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Ellis, pastor. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Sunday, at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of her son at 1504 E. Liberty St.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Lucille Mullis Laws

KANNAPOLIS — Lucille Mullis Laws, 70, 1001 N. Cannon Blvd., died Friday (March 2, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord after two years of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Mrs. Laws was born May 8, 1930, in Mecklenburg County, the daughter of the late Thomas Lee and Lena Caudle Mullis. Before her retirement in 1994, she was employed with Fieldcrest Cannon for 45 years, first in the Plant 1 pillowcase department and later at Plant 6. She was a member of the former Grace Baptist Church and later attended Charity Baptist Church.

Survivors include son Jesse Laws Jr., Kannapolis; daughter Bridgette Bell, Kannapolis; brother Guy H. Mullis, Kannapolis; sisters Pat Kidd, China Grove, Cora Lee Newell, Charlotte, and Betty Toogood, Charlotte; and two grandsons.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Charity Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. R.J. Hammond and the Rev. Raymond Bailey. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Gloria C. McBride

LINWOOD — Gloria Jean Cooper McBride, 43, Wilson Road, died Friday (March 2, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. McBride was born March 4, 1957, in Davidson County, the daughter of Eugene “Red” and Louise Davis Cooper of Lexington. She was a graduate of West Davidson High School and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she also earned a master’s degree in library science. She was a librarian at the Davidson County Library.

She was a member of Churchland Baptist Church in Churchland, where she served as church librarian, treasurer, Sunday School teacher, choir member and BYW member.

She was also voting precinct chairman for the Boone Township and chairman for the Davidson County Quiz Bowl teams.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband Jesse F. McBride Jr.; stepson Chip Lee McBride, Baltimore; stepdaughter Tammy McBride Leonard, Linwood; brother Earl Cooper, Linwood; sister Rita Caudle, Lexington; and grandmother Marguerita Davis, Lexington.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Churchland Baptist Church, Churchland, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Stephen Martin. Burial Davis Cemetery, Churchland.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington. The remainder of the time, the family will be at the home of her parents at 6450 S. Highway 150, Lexington.

Edna Elizabeth Mills

Edna Elizabeth Mills, 64, 923 Locke St., died Friday (March 2, 2001) at Brian Nursing Center after two weeks of serious illness.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Oscar Cammie Morgan

ALBEMARLE — Oscar Cammie Morgan, 87, 1447 Highway 52 N., died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Morgan was born Dec. 8, 1913, in Rowan County, the son of the late Henry D. and Julia Morgan Morgan. Retired from Herlocker Shell Service, he was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

His wife, Etta Baldwin Morgan, died July 5, 1988.

Survivors include son Gerald Morgan, Albemarle; brother Otha Morgan, Norwood; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Grace Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Gary Pinion and the Rev. Dolan Talbert. The body will be take to the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Stanly Funeral Home.

 

David ‘Mike’ Nash

ALBEMARLE — David Michael “Mike”Nash, 49, 532 Catalina Drive, died Wednesday (Feb. 28, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home. Burial, Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

William John Shaw

William “Bill” John Shaw, 80, formerly of Salisbury, died Friday (March 2, 2001) at his home in Savannah, Ga.

He was born June 23, 1920, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of the late Mark Bohdanecka and Boleslaw Szyszkowski. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he spend 40 years in service with the federal government. He served as supervisor of the Social Security Administration in Salisbury from 1975 until his retirement in 1985.

After his retirement, he spent eight years as a funeral director’s assistant at Summersett Funeral Home. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Mr. and Mrs. Sunday School Class.

His wife, Virginia “Ginnie” Brewbaker Shaw, died July 4, 1996.

Survivors include a son, John W. Shaw, Lawrenceville, Ga.; a daughter, Dr. Gail Lynn Shaw Wright, Savannah, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, graveside at City Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Griffis, pastor of First United Methodist Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Carolyn Millie Torbush

The funeral will be Sunday for Carolyn Millie Torbush, 53, 360 Acorn Oaks Drive, who died Friday (March 2, 2001) at her home after two years of declining health.

Born Jan. 21, 1948, in Concord, Mrs. Torbush was the daughter of Betty Isenhour Mills, Concord, and the late Billy Joe Mills. She was educated in the Concord schools and at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

Employed by Duke Power Co. for 28 years, she had retired in 1999. She was a member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Billy Carl Torbush, whom she married March 20, 1966; son Billy Carl Torbush Jr., Salisbury; daughter Angela Evette Torbush, of the home; sister Ann Mills Hixson, Matthews; and three grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev.Neill Shaw, pastor, Milford Hills United Methodist Church. Entombment, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Acorn Oaks Drive.
