Zeffie ‘Zeb’ Christopher

CONCORD — Zeffie “Zeb” Coleman Christopher, 73, Concord, died Wednesday (Feb. 28, 2001) at Five Oaks Nursing Home.

Born April 21, 1927, in Catawba, Mr. Christopher was a son of the late Fred and Clair Ellis Edwards Christopher. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

A carpenter for 35 years with Hipp Construction Co., Charlotte, he was a member of South Iredell County Hunt Club. He attended Mount Mourne Church of God, Mooresville.

Survivors include wife Louise Webb Christopher; son Joseph Christopher, Mooresville; daughters Patricia Heavner, Mooresville, and Barbara Smith, Ocala,Fla.; stepsons Roger Clark, Mooresville, Michael Clark, Gastonia, and Johnny Clark, Grover; stepdaughter Carolyn Morgan, Kannapolis; sisters Alma Barnette, Troutman, Louise Rogers, Mooresville, and Ermie Pope, Cherry Grove; brother Duane Christopher, Mooresville; 22 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Mount Mourne Church of God, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. W. Lawrence Ownbey and the Rev. Ted Smith. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

John ‘Ike’ Clodfelter Jr.

LEXINGTON — John Tilden “Ike”Clodfelter Jr., 73, 207 Hemstead St., died Monday (Feb. 26, 2001)at his home.

Born Oct. 14, 1927, in Davidson County’s Petersville community, Mr. Clodfelter was a son of the late John T. and Annie ThompsonClodfelter. Retired from the city of Lexington, he was a member of Life in the Word International Church.

Survivors include wife Mozell Reid, Lexington; stepdaughters the Rev. Marilyn Jones Chambers, Greensboro, and Roslyn and Veronia Simmons, both of Lexington; brothers Hollis and James Clodfelter, both of Lexington; sister Mary Holt, Lexington; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Saturday, New Hope True Vine Holiness Church, conducted by Bishop S.T. Greene and the Rev. Randy Scott.The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: The body may be viewed today from noon to 8 at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington. The family will be at the home on Hemstead Street.

 

Loyd Columbus Dancy

KANNAPOLIS — Loyd Columbus Dancy, 77, 4120 Orphanage Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2001) of a brief illness.

Born Feb. 10, 1924, in Chase City, Va., Mr. Dancy, a son of the late Lloyd Fields and Verdie Wyatt Dancy, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired in 1986 from Cannon Mills and was formerly employed in the Cabarrus County maintenance department.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. James Smith and the Rev. Dr. Bobby G. Ross. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Orphanage Road.

 

Anne H. Fleming

The funeral will be Saturday for Anne Hagestad Fleming, 98, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Feb. 28, 2001) at Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks after a period of declining health.

Born Dec. 17, 1902, in River Falls, Wisc., Mrs. Fleming was a daughter of the late Herman and Margaret Hagestad. She was educated at River Falls State Teachers College and the University of Minnesota. A former elementary school teacher, she was a volunteer at W.G.Hefner VAMedical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Veldon Fleming, and a son, Peter V. Fleming.

Survivors include son David Charles Fleming, Charlotte; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services: Memorial, 3 p.m. Saturday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gene Bost, chaplain, Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks. Burial, Greenwood Cemetery,Emerald,Wisc.

Delmer ‘Tom’ Fraley

FAITH —Delmer Lee “Tom”Fraley, 84, Faith, died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at his home.

Born Jan. 3, 1917, in Rowan County, Mr. Fraley, a son of the late Samuel P. and Ada Josephine Peeler Fraley, was a 1936 graduate of Granite Quarry High School.

In 1979, he retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1 weave room 7 after 43 years. He was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, the Men’s Brotherhood, and was a former member of Faith Civitan Club.

An avid American Legion baseball fan, he helped maintain Faith Ballpark. He had bowled on several teams.

Survivors include wife Kathleen Moose Fraley, whom he married Dec. 21, 1940; sons Delmer Lee Fraley Jr. and Marvin Wayne Fraley, both of Salisbury; brothers Welker and David Fraley, both of Faith; sisters Janie Peeler, Rockwell, and Kathleen Yates, Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Shiloh United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev.Lawrence Bolick. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. At other times the family will be at the home in Faith.

Helen West Hager

MOORESVILLE — Helen West Hager, 85, 803 Linwood Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2001) at her home.

Born Feb. 10, 1916, in Iredell County, Mrs. Hager was a daughter of the late Rev. William Edward and Shannon Ranson West.

She graduated valedictorian from Mooresville High School, Mitchell Junior College and Queens College, where she received a teacher’s certificate. An all state basketball player at Mooresville High School, she excelled in music at Queen’s College. She also held many active offices including president of the student body.

Mrs. Hager was active at Broad Street United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of United Methodist Women, serving as an officer in the Western North Carolina Conference of United Methodist Women. She went on many mission trips and building teams until she reached the age of 81.

Her husband, the Rev. Parker Hager, died Nov. 13, 1992.

Survivors include sons Charles W. and James R. Hager, both of Sylva; sister Rachel West, Charlotte; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Broad Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Macdonald. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Clyde ‘Pete’ Hatley

OAKBORO — Clyde Dowell “Pete” Hatley, 83, 16818 Frog Pond Road, brother of Ethel Talbert, Albemarle, died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at his home.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

James Lenson Hicks

KANNAPOLIS — James Lenson Hicks, 81, 2122 Brantley Road, died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at his home.

Born Oct. 8, 1919, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mr. Hicks was a son of the late George W. and Eugenia A. Hicks. He was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church and Oasis Shrine Temple.

While serving with the U.S. Army 4th Infantry Division, he was part of the first landing at Normandy on D-Day. He owned and operated The Camera and Hobby Shop in Kannapolis, until he retired in 1986.

Survivors include wife of 60 years Bernice Hunter Hicks; sons James Ronnie and George Monroe Hicks, both of Concord; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

WOODLEAF — Walter Jackson, 82, 825 Will Black Road, died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Gladys Johnson Kerley

KANNAPOLIS — Gladys Johnson Kerley, 81, 515 Martin Circle, died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at Universal HealthCare of Concord.

Born Oct. 24, 1919, in Alexander County, Mrs. Kerley was a daughter of the late Foy and Fallie Goodwin Johnson. She was a member of Centerview Baptist Church, where she was a former choir member. She retired after 42 years from Cannon Mills, where she had worked in the weave room and sheet department.

Survivors include husband Dwight C. Kerley; brothers Dwight and Grady Johnson, both of Hiddenite; sisters Mae Johnson, Hiddenite, and Dorothy Jean Childers, Charlotte.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Willie Rash. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister-in-law Pauline Dancy, 402 E. 10th St, Kannapolis.

Marie Beatrice Lefler

GOLD HILL — Marie Beatrice Ketchie Hill Lefler, 80, Gold Hill, died Wednesday (Feb. 28, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,Salisbury.

Born June 19, 1920, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lefler, a daughter of the late Martin Luther and Maie Hoffman Ketchie, was educated at Rockwell High School. She retired from Rowan Industries, where she a seamstress, and was an avid seamstress after her retirement.

A life member of Liberty United Methodist Church, she was in the Senior Citizens Club.

Her first husband, Frank Eugene Hill, died Dec. 1, 1988, and her second husband, J.B. “Pop” Lefler, died Jan. 8, 2001.

Survivors include son Dennis Hill, Gold Hill; daughter Jean Hill Lefler, Salisbury; brothers Ben Ketchie, Gold Hill, and Frank Ketchie, Salisbury; sisters Helen Hill and Margaret Ketchie, both of Gold Hill, and George McDaniel, Poquotan,Va.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Liberty United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev.Mark Helms. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Charles Lee Lucas

CHINA GROVE — Charles Lee Lucas, 71, 613 Mitchell Ave., died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Sept. 10, 1929, in Rowan County, Mr. Lucas, a son of the late Anna Lucas, was educated in the Rowan County schools. He retired as food service supervisor at the Piedmont Correctional Center. A member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include wife Brenda Cress Lucas; sons ChuckLucas, Radford, Va., and Marvin Lucas, West Jefferson; and several grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Monday, National Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. William Campbell. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home of Pauline Cress, 216 W.Ketchie St.

Alphonso F. Myers

STATESVILLE — Alphonso Flavius Myers, 30, 132 Verna Drive, died Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2001) at Carolinas Medical Center,Charlotte, from injuries sustained in a pedestrian/ tractor-trailer accident on Interstate 77 south of Statesville.

Born April 9, 1970, in Salisbury, Mr. Myers was a son of former Cleveland residents A.W. and Nancy Holt Myers, now of Forbes, N.D. He was a graduate of West Rowan HighSchool and attended North Carolina StateUniversity, Rowan Cabarrus-Community College, Spartan Aeronautical School of Oklahoma, and Dalfort Aviation, Charlotte.

Myers was employed by Duke Energy at McGuire Nuclear Station in operations and was owner/operator of Fourth Creek Shooting Preserve, Cleveland.

A member of Diamond Hill Baptist Church, he was in the Steps of Faith Sunday School class, served on the nomination committee, helped as an usher, and helped teach the third and fourth grade Sunday school class. Also a member of Hunting Creek Chapter, Quail Unlimited, he was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Wendy Stewart Myers, whom he married May 28, 1994; daughter Ashley Danielle Myers, of the home; brother Joseph Alan Myers, Rockwell; sister Rebecca Jane M. Jaco, McMinnville, Tenn.; and maternal grandmother Betty Velma Holt, Starr.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Diamond Hill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl Williams. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nicholson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Verna Drive.

James Roddy Neely Jr.

The funeral will be Saturday for James Roddy Neely Jr., 77, 413 W. 15th St., who died Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born July 4, 1923, in Davidson County, Mr. Neely, a son of the late James Roddy and Fannie Lopp Neely, was a graduate of Dunbar High School, Lexington. He was a truck driver with Byrd Motor Lines. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

A daughter, Deborah N. McManus, died Oct. 6, 1999.

Survivors include sons James Roddy “Dan” Neely III, Salisbury, and Richardlee Neely, East Spencer; daughters Patricia Stout and Linda Clark, both of Salisbury, Lola Bittle, Fort Wayne,Ind., and Valerie Ellison, Winston-Salem; brothers John Oliver Neely, Lexington, Charles Glenn, Youngstown, Ohio, and Robert Glenn, Las Vegas, Nev.; sister Mattie Terry, Lexington; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Shady Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Gaston. Burial, National Cemetery, 10 a.m.Monday.

Visitation: 3:30-4 p.m. Saturday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of Dan Neely, 208 Milford Drive.

William “Bill”Shaw, 80, Savannah, Ga., formerly of Salisbury, died Friday (March 2, 2001) in Savannah,Ga.

Thomas Alvin Stutts

DENVER — Thomas Alvin Stutts, 64, 6022 Highway East, died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born May 4, 1936, in Iredell County, Mr. Stutts was a son of the late Hugh and Margaret McNeely Stutts.

Survivors include wife Evelyn Drum Stutts; son Timothy Stutts, Sherrills Ford; sisters Louise Cook, Jean Brown and Shirley Poole, all of Mooresville; brothers Robert Stutts, Winston-Salem, and Joe, Walt and Lewis Stutts, all of Mooresville; and seven grandchildren.
