Kenneth Paul Caple
ALBEMARLE — Kenneth Paul Caple, 36, 402 S. Bell
Ave., died Thursday (June 28, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, as a
result of injuries sustained when struck by a car in Charlotte several days
earlier.
Born Jan. 3, 1964, in Stanly County, he was the
son of Charlie Caple Jr., New London, and the late Rachel Cagle Caple A 1982
graduate of North Stanly High School, he was a member of First Baptist Church of
Badin.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include
stepmother Willie Bell Caple, New London; sisters Lisa Caple, Albemarle, Hazel
Caple, Salisbury and Sheena Neely, China Grove; stepbrother Charles Barrett,
Washington, D.C.; and stepsister Crystal Redferan of District Heights, Md..
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, First Baptist Church,
Badin, conducted by the Rev. Harvey Marsh, pastor. Burial at Oak View Cemetery,
New London.
Visitation: 1:30 p.m., at the church.

Nancy Sloop Gillean
Nancy Sloop Gillean, 80, Salisbury, died Friday
(June 29, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born June 10, 1921, in Rowan County, she was the
daughter of the late Samuel E. and Ada Felts Sloop. A 1938 graduate of Mount
Ulla High School, she also graduated from Mitchell College. She was employed by
Carolina Tractor in her early life and later retired from Cone Mills.
A member of Franklin Presbyterian Church, she was
active in the Women’s Sunday School Class and the Women of the Church. She had
taught Sunday school and was a member of the church choir. She was also a member
of the Women’s Quilting Group.
Her husband, Hayden Wetmore Gillean, died Nov.
12, 1990.
Survivors include a son, Stan Gillean, Salisbury;
a daughter, Jan Gillean, Salisbury; and three grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, memorial service,
Franklin Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Summey, pastor.
Burial, church cemetery, 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Visitation: Following the service, at the
fellowship hall.

Eleanor Hellard
Eleanor Myers Hellard, 87, 4065 Woodleaf Road,
died Friday (June 29, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born April 17, 1914, in Rowan County, she was the
daughter of the late Virgil and Daisy Sink Myers. Educated in the Rowan County
schools, she was employed by Rickman Manufacturing Co. for many years.
Mrs. Hellard was a lifelong member of Enon
Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for 50
years. She also played the pump organ for the church for a brief period. She was
a member of the WMU and a vacation Bible school leader for several years.
Also a member of the Eastern Star, Salisbury
Chapter 117, she participated in the Mount Tabor nutritional site.
Her husband, Theo “Boots” C. Hellard, died
June 4, 1992.
Survivors include a son, Ronnie Hellard,
Charlotte; a daughter, Joann Gwynn, Ararat, Va.; a brother, Woody Myers,
Hamilton, Ohio; a sister, Patti M. Wood, Salisbury; six grandchildren; and 17
great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Enon Baptist Church,
conducted by the Rev. Wayne Trexler and the Rev. Wendell Davis. Burial in church
cemetery. The body will be placed in church at 1:30.
Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. today at Summersett
Funeral Home.

Clara Belle Hurst
KANNAPOLIS — Clara Belle Sellers Hurst, 83,
1417 Sherwood Drive, died Thursday (June 28, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center,
Concord. She had been in declining health for eight months.
Born April 11, 1918, in Ruby, S.C., she was the
daughter of the late Archie Hilton and Nellie Claudine Allen Sellers. She had
retired from Cannon Mills.
Her husband, Charlton Wilbur Hurst, died Sept. 1,
1968.
Survivors include daughters Emma Jean Holloway
and Loretta Green, both of Kannapolis; son Bobby David Hurst, Kannapolis; a
brother, Edward H. Sellers, Kannapolis; sisters Cleo Stafford and Elma Gibson,
both of Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. today, Lady’s Funeral Home,
conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker and the Rev. John Jones. Burial, Carolina
Memorial Park.
Visitation: 1 to 3 p.m. today, at the funeral
home.

Helen Szabo
CHINA GROVE — Helen Stella Padolka Szabo, 88,
China Grove, died Thursday (June 28, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,
Salisbury.
Born on Feb. 11, 1913, in Johnstown, Pa., she was
the daughter of the late Helen Grivinski. Educated in the Pennsylvania schools,
Mrs. Szabo was a retired beautician.
Her husband, Peter Szabo Jr., died Aug. 13, 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Smith, China
Grove; sisters Adele Dovey and Wanda Janet, both of Johnstown, Pa.; and two
grandchildren.
Services: Private memorial service, Sunday, West
Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Andrea Redard, pastor of First United
Methodist Church, Landis. Entombment at West Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation: No formal visitation. The family will
be at the home of daughter Sandra Smith, China Grove.
