Partners in Learning, a day-care center on the campus of Catawba College, has received accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
The recognition — given to about 7.7 percent of early childhood programs in the United States — is a first for a Rowan County day-care operation, said Norma Honeycutt, director of Partners in Learning.
“We were thrilled,” she said. “...Our mission has always been to emphasize the importance of creating stimulating and challenging community environments in which all children are given the opportunity to develop.”
The accreditation requires review of health and safety, staff qualifications and environment, Honeycutt said.
“The greatest emphasis is on the children’s relationships with the staff and how the program helps each child grow and learn intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally,” she said.
Thursday morning staff, parents and supporters met for breakfast at Partners in Learning.
“They’ve done a lot of work to achieve that,” said Rosie Allen, director of the Rowan County Partnership for Children.
