Kannapolis names new principals for Jackson Park, Woodrow Wilson

BY SCOTT JENKINS
SALISBURY POST

KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis City Board of Education named new principals Tuesday for Jackson Park and Woodrow Wilson elementary schools.

Walter A. “Lex” Graham will become Jackson Park’s new principal on July 1. He is now Jackson Park’s curriculum coordinator. He’ll replace Peggy Wagstaff, who will become the school system’s assistant superintendent.

Dr. Melvin W. Fogg Jr. will be the new principal at Woodrow Wilson. Fogg is currently the principal of Pinebrook Elementary School in Mocksville. He replaces Dr. Chip Buckwell, whom the board named principal at Kannapolis Middle School.

These are the latest administrative changes announced by the school system in recent months. Associate Superintendent Dr. Jo Anne Byerly becomes superintendent July 1, when Dr. Ed Tyson retires.

“I am very excited about the addition of these fine people to our leadership team,” Byerly said. “Both of these gentlemen have superior credentials and are outstanding educators. They are committed to improving student achievement and to continuing the success of Kannapolis City Schools.”

Graham has been with Kannapolis City Schools since 1972 and has been in public education since 1971. He’s been the curriculum coordinator of Jackson Park Elementary School since 1989. Before that, he was a teacher, coach, and systemwide evaluator and observer.

Graham has a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Wake Forest University. He also holds two master’s degrees — one in school administration and one in social studies — from UNC Charlotte.

Fogg has been in public education since 1969 and has been principal of Pinebrook Elementary School in the Davie County School System the past eight years.

Pinebrook Elementary has earned exemplary status in the state’s ABCs of Education program accountability program the last four years, being named a school of distinction — with at least 80 percent of students scoring at grade level in reading and math — the past two years.

Fogg also worked as assistant principal at Davie High School. Before joining the Davie schools, he worked as a teacher and coach at Concord High School in the Cabarrus County Schools. He also worked in the Rowan-Salisbury Schools as a teacher and coach at West Rowan High School.

Fogg holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees from Appalachian State University. His bachelor’s degree is in health and physical education. His master’s degree is in school administration. He holds two doctorate degrees, one in leadership and higher education, the other in educational leadership.
