A group of retirees recently took to the woods to help fix up a trail in Dan Nicholas Park.
The group, Duke Power Retired Employees, also gave the park $2,000 to pay for the material used in constructing bridges on the trail. The money came from the group’s Community Service Program.
Rowan Parks Director Jim Foltz praised the group during a Parks and Recreation Commission meeting this week, and thanked them for their work and money.
The project, which was just completed, included replacing old bridges on the 2-mile long Persimmon Branch Nature Trail.
Arnold Peeler of Granite Quarry headed up the group.
Around a dozen retirees spent several days in the woods working the project.
Foltz also thanked Commission member Don Bringle, who he credited for getting the attention of the group.
Bringle’s father, Elwood Bringle, is a member of the group.
Bringle said the group has done several projects at Nazareth Children’s Home and was looking for other projects.
He mentioned the need for volunteers and help with park projects to his father.
