Harris Albright

Harris Albright, 95, 712 Safrit Road, died Tuesday (June 26, 2001) at Genesis ElderCare.

Melford M. Dunlap

The funeral will be Wednesday for Melford McKinney Dunlap, 80, Hefner VAMedical Center, who died Friday (June 22, 2001)at the center.

Born Jan. 9, 1921, Mr. Dunlap served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Services: Graveside, 10 a.m. Wednesday, U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard location, conducted by a VAMedical Center chaplain.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Pauline Canup Griffin

KANNAPOLIS — Pauline Canup Robinette Griffin, 92, formerly of 915 Polo Drive, died Monday (June 25, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 20, 1908, in Rowan County, Mrs. Griffin was a daughter of the late Daniel Joseph and Corrie Helms Canup. In 1973, she retired after 49 years at Cannon Mills Co., Plant 1, sewing room.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was involved with the nursery department for 40 years. She was active in circle work and with the Keenage Club. She also served on the deacon board.

Her first husband, T. Fred Robinette, died May 8, 1961, and her second husband, H. Boyce Griffin, died Feb. 5, 1994.

Survivors include sisters Ruby Wright, Hickory, Pearl Lambert, Morganton, and Millie Huneycutt, Thomasville.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Norman Brisson. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ralph Turner Hallman

Ralph Turner Hallman, 76, Salisbury, died Tuesday (June 26, 2001) at Hefner VAMedical Center.

Nelle Roberts Lovette

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Nelle Roberts Lovette, 83, 44th Ave. N., died Sunday (June 24, 2001) at her home.

Born Jan. 18, 1918, in Salisbury, N.C., Mrs. Lovette was a daughter of the late C.A. and Bessie Lidaker Roberts. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Landis, N.C.

She and her late husband, Gaither Franklin Lovette, owned and operated the former Pilot House Motel and the Linda Motel on 29th Avenue North. They also owned Lovette Realty and Investment Co. for many years.

Survivors include sons Gary L. Lovette, Myrtle Beach, and Eric G.Lovette, Jakarta, Indonesia; daughter Rebecca Lovette Whitworth, Evansville, Ind.; brother Roy Roberts, Landis, N.C.; sister Della Mae Dayvault, Landis,N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Southeastern Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. Carl Gnewuch.

Irene Rogers

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Irene Tanner Rogers, 89, 424 Sycamore Ave., who died Saturday (June 23, 2001)at Universal Healthcare,Concord.

Born Oct. 19, 1911, in Jackson County, Ga., Mrs. Rogers was a daughter of the late Henry Benjamin and Esther Lona Thomas Tanner. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Retired from CannonMills, Plant 4, she worked in the No. 1 spinning room.

Her husband, George Edward Rogers, died Nov. 22, 1982; and a son, Curtis Rogers, died Dec. 28, 1998.

Survivors include son James “Jim” Rogers, San Antonio, Texas; sisters Daisy T. Watkins, Edna Biggerstaff and Polly Lowder, all of Kannapolis; brother Grady Tanner, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Dale Tanner and the Rev. Max Smith. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Daisy Watkins, 304 Meadowood Circle.

Martha Leab Rufty

WOODLEAF — Martha Leab Rufty, 85, Woodleaf, died Monday (June 25, 2001) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury after an extended illness.

Born April 16, 1916, in Rowan County, Mrs. Rufty was a daughter of the late Jacob Jonas and Bessie Christie Leab. She was a graduate of Cleveland High School and attended Appalachian State University.

Retired, she was employed as a quality control inspector with Vick Manufacturing, Greensboro. She was a member of Cleveland First Baptist Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Her husband, John S. Rufty, died Oct. 2, 1998; and a son, Richard Arnold Rufty, died March 17, 1979.

Survivors include daughter Louise Rufty Thomas, West End; brother Joseph C. Leab, Cleveland; sisters Margaret Ludwig and Sadie L. Kennerly, both of Statesville, and Pauline L. Shuping and Lola L. Floss, both of Salisbury; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Glenn O. Dancy, pastor, Cleveland First Baptist Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.

LowellJay Stirewalt

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Wednesday for Lowell Jay Stirewalt, 73, Rockwell, who died Sunday (June 24, 2001) at his home.

Born Aug. 21, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Stirewalt, a son of the late Harvey Leonard and Florence Mary Anna Weaver Stirewalt, was educated in the Rowan County schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He retired in 1989 from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, towel packing department, after 45 years. He was a member of Organ Lutheran Church and Keller Masonic Lodge 657.

Survivors include wife Mary Frances “Polly” Foutz Stirewalt, whom he married July 11, 1948; daughters Kimberly Leonard, Rockwell, and Glenda Linker, Salisbury; sisters Lola Fryer, Mooresville, Vida Stirewalt, Rockwell, and Zena Kesler, Salisbury; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Organ Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John E. Pless. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.

James ‘Edd’ Utley

KANNAPOLIS — James “Edd” Utley, 86, 207 N. Rose Ave., died Sunday (June 24, 2001) at Universal HealthCare, Concord.

Born Oct. 19, 1914, in Iredell County, Mr. Utley was a son of the late Henry David and Mittie Sherrill Utley. He had retired from Cannon Mills, where he worked in the No. 1 weave room and the sewing room. He was a member of St. Enoch Lutheran Church.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy Reserves. He was a life member of VFWPost 8989. For many years he was a member of the color guard at Kannapolis Stadium for football games.

He was a life member of Mariam Winslow Order of the Eastern Star 168, and a member of Scottish Rites, Oasis Shrine Temple and Allen Graham Masonic Lodge 165.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Edith Hatley Utley; daughters Jane U. Lefler, Concord, and Jan U. Christy, Kannapolis; sons James “Jimmy” Utley Jr., Mount Airy, Jack G. Utley, Mount Pleasant, and Joe L. Utley, Charlotte; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Enoch Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John Mark Beam and the Rev. Bobby Utley. Burial, church cemetery. Military rites by DAV Chapter 27.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on North Rose Avenue.

MOCKSVILLE — Colin James York, Bethel Church Road, died Monday (June 25, 2001) at his home.
