Obituaries

             

Ruby Mae Brown

The funeral will be Thursday for Ruby Mae Bonds Brown, 73, Salisbury, who died Monday (June 18, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two weeks of illness.

Born Oct. 26, 1927, in Rowan County, Mrs. Brown, a daughter of the late Homer Overton and Edith Safrit Bonds, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was employed with Carolina Maid and retired from Fiber Industries, now KoSa.

A life member of United Church of Christ, she was a member of First United Church of Christ, was in the Shives Sunday School Class and was president of Circle 2. She was a member of Locke Fire Department Auxiliary.

Her husband, Milo Council Brown, died in 1999; a son, Charles Ray Brown, died in 1948; and son Homer Brown died in 1987. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, who died in 1992.

Survivors include son Jason Brown,Salisbury; daughter Glenda Shrewsbury, Salisbury; brother Narvie Lee Bonds, Salisbury; sisters Martha Wells, Salisbury, and Dot Hansell, Old Fort; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m.,Thursday, First United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. David Crook. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Annie Lou Freeman

KANNAPOLIS — Annie Lou Freeman, 75, 602 Dodge St., died Tuesday (June 19, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 27, 1925, in Richmond County, Mrs. Freeman was a daughter of the late Pearl Eugene and Elizabeth Thomas Ballard. She retired from Hoechst Celanese Inc. after 15 years and was a member of Central Baptist Church and the church choir.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Freeman.

Survivors include sons Lawrence Richard “Ricky” Freeman Jr. and Micky Freeman, both of Kannapolis; daughter Marilyn Wright, Kannapolis; brothers Homer and Hal Ballard, both of Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m., Thursday, Central Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Micky Freeman, 733 Pine St.

James Edgar Lyerly

CLEVELAND — James Edgar Lyerly, 71, Cleveland, died Tuesday (June 19, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Glenn Calvin Petrea

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Thursday for Glenn Calvin Petrea, 85, The Meadows, formerly of Penninger Road, Concord, who died Monday (June 18, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare, Salisbury.

Born March 27, 1916, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Petrea was a son of the late Luther Calvin and Cora Mae Taylor Petrea. He worked for the city of Concord engineering department for 17 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of Woodmen of the World and New Gilead United Church of Christ and was a past member and deacon of Phaniels Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel Melton Petrea, on March 29, 1968, and his second wife, Grace Rivers Petrea, on March 2, 1988.

Survivors include sons the Rev. Jerry Calvin Petrea, Claxton, Ga., and Paul Petrea, Indian Trail; stepdaughters Sunny Cook, China Grove, and Sylvia “Candy” Snider, Salisbury; sister Ethel Sipe, Kannapolis; brother Clyde Petrea, Faith; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m., Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Larry Bolick. Burial, Phaniels Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Marguerite Wakefield

Marguerite Mason Wakefield, 90, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Elm Street, Salisbury, died Friday (June 15, 2001) in Tucson, Ariz.

Born Jan. 20, 1911, in Spartanburg, S.C., Mrs. Wakefield, a daughter of the late Madison Palmer and Josephine Rogers Mason, was educated in the Spartanburg schools. She was a long time employee of Hefner VAMedical Center and a member of First Methodist Church of Salisbury.

Her husband, Robert Henry Wakefield, died Dec. 13, 1999.

Survivors include son Robert H. Wakefield Jr., Tucson,Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m., Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev.Thomas L. Griffis, pastor, First United Methodist Church.

Visitation: At the cemetery after the service.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.
