Deraleen W. Coggins

ALBEMARLE — Deraleen Whitley Coggins, 74, of 33892 Old Herlocker Road, died Saturday (June 16, 2001) at her home.

Services: 2 p.m., Tuesday, Immanuel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Orville Threatt and the Rev. Henry Jenkins. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Stanly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Olin Mitchell Connell

MOCKSVILLE — Olin Mitchell Connell, 89, Howard Street, died Friday (June 15, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 20, 1912, in Forsyth County, Mr. Connell was a son of the late Luico M. and Lula Leach Connell. He worked for Ingersol Rand, in the paint department, and attended Victory Baptist Church.

His wife, Bessie Connell, died Dec. 23, 1992, and sons Dewey and Barry Connell, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons Ray M. and James R. Connell, both of Cooleemee; daughters Brenda Connell, Mocksville, Paulette Chattin, Cooleemee, and Dianne Waller, Salisbury; sister Eva Doss, Trinity; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Services were held today at 11 a.m., Davie Funeral Service chapel, conducted by the Rev. Shelby Harbour. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Memorials: Victory Baptist Church, Building Fund, 160 Midway St., Cooleemee, NC 27014.

 

Ida Chandler Emery

STATESVILLE — Ida Chandler Emery, 92, 511 Davie Ave., died Saturday (June 16, 2001) at Statesville Brian Nursing Center.

Born March 10, 1909, in Rowan County, Mrs. Chandler was a daughter of the late John George and Blanche Josephine Bodwell Chandler.

A graduate of Cleveland High School and Long’s Nursing School, she was a private-duty registered nurse and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, Andrew Wesley Emery, whom she married in 1936, died Jan. 8, 1996.

Survivors include sister Lena C. Colvin, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a number of nephews and nieces.

Services: Private graveside service, Tuesday, Oakwood Cemetery. Nicholson Funeral Home is in charge.

Visitation: None.

Memorials: First Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Meeting St., Statesville, NC 28677.

 

Daniel ‘David’ Gray

Daniel “David” Cornelius Gray, 69, 641 Statesville Blvd., died Friday (June 15, 2001) at Rowan Regional medical Center after two years of declining health and one week of serious illness.

Born Feb. 8, 1932, in Rowan County, Mr. Gray was a son of the late Luther A. and Mary Summer Gray. He attended R.A. Clement High School and retired from Rico Marble and Tile.

He had been a member of Jerusalem Holiness Church, Woodleaf, and was a former member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Salisbury.

His wife, Martha Louise Gray, died March 5, 2001.

Survivors include son David “PeeWee” Gray Jr., Spencer; daughter Doris Jackson, of the home; brothers Harvey Gray, Statesville, and Theodore and John Gray, both of Woodleaf; sisters Juanita Gray Ijames, Woodleaf, Thelma Stevenson, Greensboro, Sandra, Doris and Sherry Gray, all of Statesville; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m., Tuesday, Trinity Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. George Hunter, pastor, and Bishop W.J. Gray. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the church.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

George ‘Gene’ Hefner

CONOVER — George Eugene “Gene” Hefner, 59, 1208 Second St. SE, died Sunday (June 17, 2001) at his home.

Born Oct. 26, 1941, in Catawba County, Mr. Hefner was a son of Blanche Wallace Hefner Mull and the late Everette Eugene Hefner.

Currently employed as a salesman, he was a former Conover police officer and served in the National Guard. Mr. Hefner was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ.

His wife, Jonnie Coley Hefner, and a son, George Eugene Hefner Jr., preceded him in death.

In addition to his mother, survivors include sons Eric Eugene and Patrick Campbell Hefner, both of Conover; daughter Laurie Hefner Corriher, China Grove; sisters Pauline Hefner Pope, Hickory, Charlene Hefner Hendrix, Conover, Phyllis Hefner Little, Salisbury, and Millie Hefner Martin, Claremont; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m., Wednesday, Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Carroll Bartholomew and the Rev. Van Grimes. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, Conover City Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Drum Funeral Home.

Jennie Faye Powell

KANNAPOLIS — Jennie Faye Powell, 86, 507 N. Enochville Ave., Kannapolis, died Saturday (June 16, 2001) at her home.

Born May 27, 1915 in Alexander County, Mrs. Powell was the daughter of the late Garrett and Mattie Miller McLain. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by husband Harold H. Powell, who died Feb. 18, 1982, and son Kenneth “Joe” Powell.

Survivors include daughter Charlene Powell and grandson Michael Powell, both of the home; sons Bill McLain, Paul “Butch,” Mike and Tony Powell, all of Kannapolis, and Terry Powell, Mooresville; brother Tom McLain, Hiddenite; six other grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m., Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Cooper. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. today, the funeral home.

 

John Henry Boger

MOCKSVILLE — John Henry Boger, 88, Ridge Road, died Saturday (June 16, 2001), at his home.

Born July 26, 1912, in Davie County, Mr. Boger was a son of the late Charlie S. and Amanda E. Miller. He retired from Cannon Mills after 41 years and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

His wife, Nannie Rummage Boger, died in 1996.

Survivors include son Johnny Boger Jr., Mocksville; and brothers Grady Boger, Mocksville, and Clarence Boger, China Grove.

Services:Graveside, 11 a.m., Tuesday, Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Dr. David Gilbreath.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

Ethel Mae G. Green

MOUNT GILEAD — Ethel Mae Greene Green, 95, 650 Zion Church Road, died Saturday (June 16, 2001) at Pinehurst Nursing Center, Pinehurst. She was the mother of Katie G. Ford and the sister of Maggie G. Green, both of Albemarle.

Services:3 p.m., Tuesday, Mount Zion AME Zion Church, Mount Gilead, conducted by the Rev. Raymond Mitchell and the Rev. Alle Mitchell. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:The family will receive friends at the home of a daughter, Viola G. McAuley, 650 Zion Church Road, Mount Gilead.

Kelsey Funeral Home of Albemarle is in charge.

 

Lonnie Bernard Wise

CHINA GROVE — Lonnie Bernard Wise, 73, 2345 Lentz Road, died Sunday (June 17, 2001), at his home.

Born April 10, 1928, in Rowan County, Mr. Wise was a son of the late Earl Bernard and Margaret White Wise. He worked for Cannon Mills for 22 years and later retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation at Salisbury after 22 years as a heavy equipment operator.

He was a member of Mount Moriah Lutheran Church. A 1945 graduate of Landis High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as an airplane mechanic and was part of the Berlin Airlift for three years. Following military service, he attended North Carolina State University.
