N.C. AMATEUR: Salisbury’s Bob Zimmerman and Stephen Bullock shot 153 and 154, respectively, for 36 holes in the North Carolina Amateur last week.
Zimmerman had rounds 79 and 74, while Bullock shot back-to-back 77s. Both missed the cut of 150.
The tournament was scheduled to wind up today at the High Point Country Club’s Willow Creek Course.

WEST BOOSTERS: Mark Vanhoy, Scott Caudle, John Brincefield and Josh Brincefield teamed up to win the championship flight in the West Rowan Boosters Club Golf Tournament.
Winning the first flight at Crescent Golf Club were Jeff Chapman, Scott Young, Tim Kepley and Gary Atwell.
Randy Chandler, Dwight Bowman, Rich Miller and Rodney Arey were the second-flight champs.
Closest-to-the-pin prizes went to Arey, Tim Himes, Jeff Jordan and Steve Massey.
Vanhoy, Robert Ogden, Chris Cohen and Alan Sides were longest-drive winners.
The 78 participants raised over $5,400 for West Rowan High School’s athletic programs.

PARENT-CHILD: Ed Miller and son Nick and Rufty Patterson and son Steven posted the best scores in the recent Warrior Golf Club Parent-Child Tournament.
The Millers shot a 2-under-par 69 to win the 18&over division, and the Pattersons shot a 69 to win the 12-14 age group.
Steve Roth and Josh Tucker shot a 70 to win the 15-17 division.
Warrior head pro Brian Lee and daughter Allison shot a 38 for nine holes to win the 6-9 age group. Gene Mothershead and son Aaron had a 40 to pace the 10-11 division.
Terry Mulkey and son Tyler had a 25 for nine holes to win the 5&under age group.
Jimmy Christy, 45, was the oldest child in the tourney, playing with father Earl. The youngest was Abby Lee, 2, who played with father Brian.
One of the tourney highlights was a hole in one by Stan Osteen on the par-3, 154-yard No. 8 hole. Osteen, who used a 6-iron, was playing with son Josh and Fred and Matt Belk.

SHOOTING HIS AGE: Charlie Gillespie, shot a 2-under-par 68 to match his age at McCanless last Sunday. It’s the first time he’s shot his age since turning 68, but he’s done it before.
He was playing with Henry Morgan, Chris Shackleford, Carlton Jackson Jr. and Bob Leonard.
Gillespie has also made his share of hole in ones, 10, dating back to when he was 20 years old in Guam. His last two aces came within less than a month of each other at McCanless in 1998.

MCCANLESS MEMORIAL: Qualifying has started in the 37th annual Grady B. McCanless Memorial Four-Ball Golf Tournament at McCanless. Qualifying ends Thursday.

JUNIOR EVENT: Steven Patterson shot a 75 to win the 15-17 age group in the first junior tournament of the summer at McCanless. Cameron Spencer was second with a 79.
Eric Shepherd took the 11-14 age group with a 75, followed by Matt Miller with an 88.
Caleb Allen and Darren Holloway each shot a 54 for nine holes in the 10&under division. Allen won on a scorecard playoff.

SOLID ROUND: South Rowan High School golf standout Sean Kramer shot a 71 in a Carolinas Golf Association junior tourney at Cedar Brook in Elkin.
Kramer led the Raiders to the Rowan County championship at the Warrior in May.He was also the individual winner.

MITCHELL HONORED: Rockwell’s Karl Mitchell, a graduate of UNC-Greensboro, has been named to the Golf Coaches Association of America All-America Scholar Team for the second straight season.
Mitchell, who is now playing in pro tournaments, was the only selection from the Southern Conference.

HANDICAP EVENT: Krista Watts took first place in a the first round of the state handicap tournament held at the Country Club of Salisbury. Avice Bost and Elaine Fuller are second and third.

CORBIN LADIES: Virginia Saintsing and Brenda Sokolowski took low net honors in a Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association member-guest tournament.
Lucy Brown and Kathy Brown finished second, while Jane Medley and Jeane Lowman placed third.
Wanda Sanders and Kathleen Cartner shot a 75 and defeated Becky Isenhour and Debbie Triplett on a scorecard playoff for low gross.
Avice Bost hit shots closest to the pin on two par-3 holes, while Triplett won on the other hole. Saintsing made the longest putt.
