James Edward Allen

MOORESVILLE — James Edward Allen, 77, River Highway, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Retirement, Mooresville.

Services: Graveside, 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Berea Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m., Tuesday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

William ‘Doug’ Bailey

WOODLEAF — William Douglas “Doug” Bailey, 81, Woodleaf, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Nov. 17, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Bailey was a son of the late Hugh Marcellus and Charlotte Fraley Culbertson Bailey.

A 1936 graduate of Woodleaf High School, he was a member of the first Beta Club in North Carolina. He attended North Carolina State University, Raleigh.

Mr. Bailey worked for the former U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, Department of Commerce, on Kodiak Island, Alaska. After returning to Woodleaf, he operated a dairy and tomato farm and later owned a company that specialized in greenhouse construction.

A member and deacon of Unity Presbyterian Church, he attended Liberty United Methodist Church, Mocksville. A charter member of Woodleaf Civitan Club, he had served as chief of Woodleaf Volunteer Fire Department.

His first wife,Marguerite Bain Bailey, died Aug. 17, 1985.

Survivors include wife Nellie Munday Steele Bailey; sons Bob and Fred Bailey, both of Woodleaf; daughter Sandra Bailey Mowery, Woodleaf, Miriam Bailey Gardner, Cary, and Mary Bailey Longmuir,Orlando, Fla.; stepsons Jimmy Steele, Woodleaf, and Tony Steele,Cooleemee; brother Jack Bailey,Charlotte; sisters Dr. Hilda Bailey, Salisbury, and Donnell Bailey Gowey,Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m., Tuesday, Unity PresbyterianChurch, conducted by the Rev. Malcolm Bullock, interim pastor, and the Rev. David Reep. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.

Rev. C. Marvin Boggs

WINSTON-SALEM — The Rev.C. Marvin Boggs, 82, 1244 Arbor Road, Apartment B-305, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Fitzgerald Healthcare Center at Arbor Acres.

Born Sept. 18, 1918, in Salisbury, Mr. Boggs was a son of the late Mike and Ollie Hartman Boggs. He was educated in the Salisbury schools and received a bachelor of divinity degree from Duke University in 1943.

Retired since 1984 as a minister in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, he served churches throughout the conference for 51 years. Minister emeritus of Wesley United Methodist Church, Statesville, he was associated with Boy Scouts of America for 60 years.

Survivors include wife Pauline Kennett Boggs.

Services:Graveside, 11 a.m., Tuesday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury. Memorial service, 3 p.m., Tuesday, Arbor Acres Community Center Fellowship Hall.

Mary Alice Buggs

LEXINGTON — Mary Alice Buggs, 77, Village Drive, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home is in charge. The family will be at the home on Village Drive.

 

Thelma H. Grubb

The funeral will be Tuesday for Thelma H. Grubb, 87, Salisbury, who died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Salisbury Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Oct. 19, 1913, in Davie County, Mrs. Grubb, a daughter of the late Richard Fuller and Zula Alice Hartley Hamilton, was a graduate of Churchland High School. She was employed at Diana Shop for 18 years.

A charter member of Franklin Baptist Church, she was in the Allie Wyatt Sunday School Class and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a children’s Sunday school teacher.

A son,Carlton Eugene Grubb, died in 1988.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Henry Alfred Grubb; sons Henry Dale Grubb, Salisbury, and Alfred Jerome Grubb, Ridgeway,Va.; daughters Joyce G. Bogle, Salisbury, and Brenda G. Goodman, Apex; sisters Mildred Hamilton Turner, High Point, Helen Hamilton Hood, Bobbie Jean Hamilton Daniel and Bertha Hamilton Correll, all of Mocksville, and Oneda Hamilton Massey, Advance; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m., Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jack Johnson, a retired minister from Mocksville. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

James Fred Herman

CHINA GROVE — James Fred Herman, 82, 1355 Patterson St., died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at his home.

Born May 14, 1919, in Alexander County, Mr. Herman was a son of the late James Charlie and Lilly Bell Lavan Herman. Educated in thte Alexander County schools, he had retired from Cannon Mills Co.

He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Landis, where he was active in Sunday school and was a deacon.

He was preceded in death by wife Martha Louise Hill Herman and daughter Barbara Louise Morgan.

Survivors include sisters Minnie Wike, Hickory, and Ida Reece, Taylorsville; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Memorial Independent Baptist Church, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Bill Baugess. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt FuneralHome, China Grove.

Burl Monroe Lanier

MOCKSVILLE — Burl Monroe Lanier, 61, Aubrey Merrell Road, died Saturday (June 9, 2001)at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born April 17, 1940, in Davie County, Mr. Lanier was a son of the late Donald Lafayette and Ella Mae Lloyd Lanier. He had retired from Energy United after 36 years with the company. He was a member of Fulton United Methodist Church and Advance Masonic Lodge 710.

Survivors include sons Michael Lanier, Advance, Barry Lanier, Winston-Salem, and Burl Lanier Jr., of the home; daughter Cindy Livengood, Lexington; brother Tommy Lanier, Lexington; sisters Bertie Foster, Lexington, and Joyce Jones, Advance; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Eaton Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. GaryFoster. Burial, Fulton United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Dorcas S. Nance

CHINA GROVE — Dorcas Shepherd Nance, 88, 2225 N. Main St., died Sunday (June 10, 2001) at her home after a period of declining health.

Born April 30, 1913, in Cooleemee, Mrs. Nance was a daughter of the late William Adam and Alice Heilig Shepherd.

She had retired from Corriher Mills after 45 years in the winding room. She was a member of Highest Praise Family Worship Center.

Her husband, Gardner C. Nance, died Sept. 25, 1992.

Survivors include daughter Evelyn Nance Cartner, China Grove.

Services: 11 a.m., Tuesday, private service, West Lawn Mausoleum.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home.

Noah Peterson

LEXINGTON — Noah Christopher Peterson, infant son of Noah Brian Peterson and Crystal Rae Wright, 194 Koontz Road, Lot 3, died at birth Saturday (June 9, 2001).

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oakdale Baptist Church cemetery, Spencer.

Visitation: At the home on Koontz Road.

Bertha H. Rose

The funeral will be Tuesday for Bertha Novela Hudspeth Rose, 86, Forest City, formerly of Salisbury, who died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Autumn Care, Forest City, after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 26, 1914, in Forsyth County, Mrs. Rose, a daughter of the late Henry Milton and Julia Hudspeth Hudspeth, was educated in the Forsyth County schools. A homemaker, she was also employed by Pickett Cotton Mill, High Point.

Her husband, Willie Chester Rose, died in 1979.

Survivors include daughter Doris Stroud, Salisbury; sister Nancy Scott, High Point; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m., Tuesday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Sy Ponds, pastor, Providence Baptist Church,East Spencer. Burial,Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Doris Stroud.

 

Gary Simmons

LEXINGTON — Gary Simmons, 49, Hemstead St., died Sunday (June 10, 2001) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home is in charge. The family will be at the home of brother Jessie Simmons, 309 N. Pugh St.

 

James D. Strickland

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Tuesday for James David Strickland, 83, Kannapolis, who died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a short illness.

Born March 25, 1918, in Buncombe County, Mr. Strickland was a son of the late W.T. and Moleda Ewing Strickland. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart.

In 1980, he retired after 46 years withCannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 7 weave room. A member of Calvary Baptist Church, Kannapolis, he was a former member of First Baptist Church of Enochville, where he was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for many years.

His wife Margaret ErvinStrickland, died Aug. 13, 1997. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Brown Snyder.

Survivors include sons Rick Strickland and Dr. James Strickland Jr., both of Kannapolis; brothers Dr. Jerry Strickland, Las Vegas, Nev., and Kenneth Strickland, California; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m., Tuesday, Calvary Baptist Church,Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Dale Tanner. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Rick Strickland, 1505 Longbow Drive.

Calvin A. Swann

GRANITE QUARRY — Calvin Adolusphas Swann, 63, 814 Dunns Mountain Road, died Sunday (June 10, 2001) at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, after an extended illness.

Beverly S. White

SPENCER — The funeral is today for Beverly Steadman White, 52, 430 Steeplechase Drive, who died Friday (June 8, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

She was the daughter of Eldora Steadman, Charlotte.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband George Edward White; daughters Sharon Elizabeth and Yvonne Marie White, both of Spencer; brothers William and Kenneth Steadman, Charlotte, and Mack Steadman,Greensboro; sisters Carol King, Upper Marlboro, Md., and Mary Williams, Clinton, Md.

Services: 1 p.m. today, First Baptist Church-West, Charlotte, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Herman Thomas. Burial, Beatties Ford Garden,Huntersville.

Visitation: Noon-1 today at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of Eldora Steadman, 1227 Condon St., Charlotte.

Bryan R. Wooward

Bryan Ronnie Wooward, 79, The Laurels of Salisbury, formerly of Ruby, S.C., died Sunday (June 10, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
