Rowan County golfers who haven’t discovered The
Tillery Tradition Country Club might be surprised to know how close it is.
Tillery Tradition is located near Mt. Gilead in
Montgomery County, but it’s less than an hour’s drive from Salisbury —
much less from the eastern side of the county. The course is located just off
Highway 73, about nine miles past Albemarle.
Tillery Tradition opened Aug. 5, 2000. It’s a
par-72 course which plays to a maximum of 6,930 yards. There are four sets of
tees — championship, men’s, senior and ladies.
Designed with rolling, tree-line fairways on 540
acres on Lake Tillery, the course has no parallel fairways. It has its share of
scenic holes.
David Sykes is the head pro, while Gus Ulrich is the
teaching pro. Both played golf at N.C. State University, where Sykes’ father,
Richard, is head coach.
