KANNAPOLIS — Travis Lee Absher, 57, 1450 Cottage Road, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

WOODLEAF — William Douglas Bailey, 81, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Curtis Gibson

BALTIMORE — Curtis Charles Gibson, 83, Payson St., died Tuesday (June 5, 2001) at the home of a son after several months of serious illness.

He was the father of John L. Gibson, Granite Quarry, N.C.

Services: 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fulton Baptist Church. Burial, Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills.

Visitation: 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

MOORESVILLE — Mary Poole Hager, 90, 601 Faith Road, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Genesis ElderCare.

CHINA GROVE — James Fred Herman, 82, 1355 Patterson St., died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at his home.

‘Ted’ Hicks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Lt. Col. George T. “Ted” Hicks, 86, Dunes Circle, died Friday (June 9, 2001) at Kingston Nursing Center.

Mr. Hicks was the stepfather of Jerry Piatt, Salisbury.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Risen Christ Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl Gnewuch. Inurnment, Southeastern Memorial Gardens.

Emma C. Hinson

LEXINGTON — Emma Faye Lee Coble Hinson, 92, formerly of Fair Street, died Friday (June 9, 2001) at Lexington Health Care.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Lexington Church of God, conducted by the Rev.Larry Poole and the Rev. Tommy Cashatt. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 3 to 4 p.m. Monday at the church.

Spencer R. Kirk

MOORESVILLE — Spencer Rozelle Kirk, 86, formerly of Mount Ulla Highway, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Retirement. He was a Salisbury native.

Born March 8, 1915, Mr. Kirk was the son of the late Lee Roy and Lena Annie Yow Kirk. Retired from Mooresville Cotton Mill Co., he attended Southside Baptist Church. A corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II, he was wounded in Lenshatz, Germany. He was a member of Tom Swann VFW Post 1072.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Frye Kirk.

Survivors include a daughter, Caroline K. Sammet, Mooresville; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. John E. Saunders and the Rev. Tom Huneycutt.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

 

Mark Allen Lyerly

Mark Allen Lyerly, 81, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health.

Born Aug. 7, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Lyerly was the son of the late Charles Alexander and Sallie Miller Lyerly. He was educated in the Rowan County schools. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he had retired from Duke Power, where he had served as construction superintendent for 36 years.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and the Veterans of Foreign War. He served as an auxiliary police officer.

His first wife, Alice Helms Lyerly, died in 1956, and his second wife, Catherine O. Lyerly, died Dec. 7, 1998.

Survivors include son Steve Stallings, Salisbury; daughters Cathy Spiegel, Concord, Pam Agner, Asheville, Debbie Mendez, Belmont, and Marsha Lyerly, Salisbury; brother Herman Lyerly, Salisbury; sisters Alma Weaver, Margaret Alsobrooks and Ruth Lyerly, all of Salisbury, and Ethel Peeler, Faith; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Doug Hefner and the Rev. Lori Hefner, co-pastors. Burial, church cemetery, with military rites by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 3 to 4:30 p.m. today at Lyerly Funeral Home.

Val ‘Dick’ Myers

Val Hampton “Dick” Myers, 80, died Thursday (June 7, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health.

Born Dec. 10, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Myers was the son of the late Clarence Franklin and Mary Hampton Myers. He was a graduate of Woodleaf High School. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S.Army Air Corps. He received a Bronze Star for flying 29 missions.

He had retired from KoSa after 17 years with the company. Mr. Myers was a member of Enon Baptist Church and VFW Post 3006, where he was a lifetime member and a commander.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Lee Myers, whom he married Jan. 31, 1942; sons Benjamin H. and Dickie Myers, both of Salisbury; daughters Sylvia Grimes, Vickie Myers and Bonnie Owens, all of Salisbury; brother Ben Myers, Salisbury; and 10 grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Trexler, pastor of Enon Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, with military rites by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

James Curtis Nesbit

MORGANTON — James Curtis Nesbit, 80, formerly of Salisbury, died Friday (June 8, 2001) after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 13, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Nesbit was the son of the late William Barber and Amanda Louise Whitley Nesbit. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.

A World War II veteran, he served with both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. He had retired from Carolina Rubber Hose. Mr. Nesbit was a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post.

His wife, Betty Perrell Nesbit, died Sept. 28, 2000.

Survivors include sons Wade Nelson Nesbit, Concord, and James Michael Nesbit, Salisbury; daughter Shirley Henrickson, Salisbury; sister Lucille Nesbitt, Salisbury; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Monday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Rodney Quesenberry, pastor of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, Concord.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Lyerly Funeral Home.

Ruth Elizabeth Owen

MOUNT ULLA — Ruth Elizabeth Lippard Owen, 95, 2925 White Road, died Friday (June 8, 2001) at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Aug. 23, 1905, in Rowan County, Mrs. Owen was the daughter of the late Charles Edgar and Maggie Petrea Lippard. A homemaker, she was educated in the Rowan County schools.

Mrs. Owen was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Arlene Moose Sunday School Class, WELCA and the Keen Age Club of Salem. She was also a member of the West Rowan Senior Citizens.

Her husband, Wilburn Leon Owen, died Dec. 4, 1944.

Survivors include sons Wilburn Leon Owen Jr. and C.Thomas Owen, both of Salisbury; daughters Margaret Rogers, Mount Ulla, and Gilda O. Brown, Lexington; brother Edgar Earl Lippard, Salisbury; sisters Margaret Misenheimer, Salisbury, and Pauline Harrington, Greensboro; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carroll Robinson and the Rev. David Nelson. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight in the church parlor. At other times, the family will be at their respective homes.

Memorials: Salem Lutheran Church, Cemetery Fund, 5080 Sherrills Ford Road, Salisbury, NC 28147.

Bertha H. Rose, 86, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Autumn Care of Forest City.

LEXINGTON — Jerry Lewis Tesh, 72, Westdale Drive, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after one month of illness.

Survivors include brother Donald Tesh, Salisbury.
