Adam ‘Randy’ Grant
KANNAPOLIS — Former Cabarrus County Superior Court Judge Adam C. “Randy” Grant, 54, died Thursday at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
A Kannapolis native, Judge Grant had retired from the bench in 1998 due to health problems. He was first elected in 1974.
An A.L. Brown graduate, he earned a bachelor’s degree and a degree in law from Wake Forest University. President of Historic Cabarrus, he was honored by the American Red Cross of Concord in 1990 for helping save the lives of an Arcadian couple who nearly drowned in High Rock Lake.

LEXINGTON — Grace Frank Smith, 91, formerly of TyroRoad, died Friday (June 8, 2001) at Lexington Health Care.

Darrion Mikail Hash
Darrion Mikail Hash died at birth Thursday (June 7, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
The infant is survived by parents James Robert and Kelly McDonald Hash of Salisbury; paternal grandparents Robert and Barbara Hash of Rockwell; maternal grandparents Bruce and Nancy McDonald of Kannapolis; paternal great-grandmother Elizabeth Hash of Forest Hills, Md.; and maternal great-grandparents Roland and Patricia Troutt of Rockwell and Mel and Mari Vinning of Denver, Colo.

Robert G. Wagener
Robert George Wagener, 81, Carillon Assisted Living of Salisbury, died Wednesday (June 6, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation of Salisbury.
Born Nov. 7, 1919, in St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Wagener was a retired security guard for AT&T. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the recipient of two Purple Hearts.
Survivors include caregivers Lana Campbell, Debbie Morrow and Gladys Motley.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday, graveside, Salisbury National Cemetery, downtown location on Government Road, conducted by a VA chaplain.

Shelton K. Godwin
KANNAPOLIS — Shelton Keith Godwin, 74, 911 Laura Ave., died Friday (June 8, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord after eight years of declining health and six weeks of serious illness.
Born Feb. 24, 1927, in Union County, Mr. Godwin was employed with Chemspun Mills in Mooresville for 25 years. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Beaver-Pittman American Legion Post 115 and Jackson Park United Methodist Church.
Survivors include wife Lelia Cox Godwin; son Ryan McGuffin of Columbia, Tenn.; daughter Deborah Whalen of Flint, Mich; stepson Jefferey David Cox of Kannapolis; sister Blondall Burris of Kannapolis; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. Sunday at Jackson Park United Methodist Church, led by the Rev. Weldon Key. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park, with military graveside rites by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Arthur Larry Rogers
CHARLOTTE — Arthur Larry Rogers, Charlotte, died Thursday (June 7, 2001) after a long illness. He was a native of Salisbury.
Mr. Rogers was born April 16, 1914, the son of the late Josephine Nussman and William Larry Rogers. Educated at Northwestern University, he worked briefly as a professional clarinet player in Chicago before returning to Salisbury to raise a family.
Mr. Rogers was band director at Boyden High School when World War II began. During the war he worked for Southern Railway. He later joined Southern Pump and Tank Co. of Charlotte, where he remained until his retirement in 1977.
Mr. Rogers served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir director and baritone soloist at Baptist churches in Salisbury, Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston-Salem and Southern Pines.
His wife, Agnes Cree Rogers, died in 1994.
Survivors include daughter Carroll Rogers Whittle of Charlotte; sons Jay Patrick Rogers of Norfolk, Va., and Dr. Larry Arch Rogers of Charlotte; and 10 grandchildren
Services: Memorial, 4 p.m. Sunday, Harry and Bryant Funeral Home, 500 Providence Road, led by the Rev. David Helms.

STANFIELD — Jessie James Sides, 67, 12240 Big Lick Road, died Thursday (June 7, 2001).

Lynn F. Simpson
CHINA GROVE — Lynn Fleming Simpson, 88, 2620 Highway 152 E., died Friday (June 8, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare, Salisbury.
Born June 14, 1912, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Charlie D. and Lillie Fleming Simpson. He graduated in 1930 from Farm Life High School.
Former owner and operator of Rowan Mills Grocery, he had retired as a security guard for the N.C. National Guard. He was a member of Mount Hope United Church of Christ, where he had served as chairman of the consistory, Sunday school teacher and youth leader.
He was a member of Woodmen of the World, Eureka Lodge 283 in China Grove and the Scottish Rites. He served as the first commander of the Rockwell American Legion, which he helped organize. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he later served with the Civil Air Patrol.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Pless Simpson; and brothers Owen Simpson of Rockwell and Wayne Simpson of China Grove.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, led by the Rev. Guy Fisher. Entombment at West Lawn Mausoleum, with rites by Eureka Masonic Lodge 283.

Sue Denny Weant
Sandra Sue Denny Weant, 56, Salisbury, died Thursday (June 7, 2001) at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Born May 15, 1945, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late James Fred and Sarah Josephine Fesperman Denny. She was a graduate of North Rowan High School and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, where she earned an associate degree in computer science.
Mrs. Weant was employed by NBCC Affiliates in Greensboro for 10 years and more recently by Replacements Ltd., also in Greensboro. She was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church.
Survivors include son Tyler Weant of Spencer; daughter Amanda Susanne Weant of Mocksville; and sisters Martha Wiseman of Apex, Ann B. Denny of Stores, Conn. and Toni Williams of Wetumpka, Ala.

Bonnie Brown Wood
KANNAPOLIS — Bonnie Brown Wood, 91, formerly of Concord, died Thursday (June 7, 2001) at Big Elm Nursing Center, where she had been a resident for the last 10 years.
Born March 1, 1910, in Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Lessie Moon Brown. Retired from Cannon Mills, she was a member of McGill Baptist Church.
Her husband, Plato Durham Wood, died April 3, 1976.
Survivors include sisters Esther Lee B. Wilson and Catherine B. Freeze, both of Kannapolis, and Juanita B. Grissom of Jacksonville.
