KANNAPOLIS — Helen Josephine Cochran, 68, 2686
Sides Road, died Sunday (June 3, 2001) at her home.
Born Oct. 30, 1932, in Polk County, Tenn., Mrs.
Cochran was a daughter of the late James Edley and Ellen Cole Cochran.
Survivors include brother Walter Reid Cochran,
Kannapolis; and sister Lillie Cochran Ross, Kannapolis.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral
Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Harry Ferguson and the Rev. Steve Gibbs.

Margaret Hodge
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for
Margaret Lee Shaw Hodge, 79, 903 W. “B” St., who died Sunday (June 3, 2001)
at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, from a brief illness.
Born June 27, 1921, in Chesterfield County, S.C.,
Mrs. Hodge was a daughter of the late Arling and Nicey Johnson Shaw. She retired
from Cannon Mills, Plant No. 7, spinning room and was a member of First Wesleyan
Church.
Her husband, Knoxie Hodge, died Sept. 2, 1982.
Survivors include son Gene B. Hodge, Kannapolis;
daughter Mary Sue Bentley, Kannapolis; sister Annie Lee Lewis, Chesterfield,S.C.;
and two grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m., Wednesday, First Wesleyan
Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Forbis L. Kivett and the Rev. Edwin Chriscoe.
Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home.

Catherine Howard
Catherine Irene Guthrie Howard, 81, Louisburg,
formerly of Yost Street, died Sunday (June 3, 2001) at University of North
Carolina Hospital,ChapelHill.
Born April 2, 1920, in Salisbury, Mrs. Howard, a
daughter of the late Tonnley Ralph and Gene Irene Deal Guthrie, was a graduate
of Boyden High School.
She resided in Kannapolis for 25 years and was
the secretary of St. John’s United Church of Christ for a number of years. She
later worked at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury until she retired in 1979.
She was a member of Enon Baptist Church and,
later, Maple Springs Baptist Church, Louisburg.
Her husband, Edward Samuel Howard, died Dec. 27,
1949.
Survivors include son Donald Howard, Raleigh;
daughter Jean H. Quinn, Franklinton; brothers Buren Guthrie, Sanford, Wiley C.
Guthrie,Clemmons, Norman “Bobby” Guthrie, Bakersville, and Bert Guthrie,
Charlotte; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m., Thursday, Maple Springs Baptist
Church, Louisburg, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Hicks. Burial, church cemetery.

Charles W. Poole
LEXINGTON — A memorial service will be held at
a later date for Charles William Poole, 50, South Cecil Street, who died Monday
(June 4, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Born April 8, 1951, in Rowan County, Mr. Poole
was a son of the late Thomas Alexander and Georgia Stella Ballard Poole. He was
a former tree trimmer with the city of Lexington electrical department.
Survivors include brothers Richard, Lee Roy,
James and Ray Poole, all of Lexington; and sister Gladys Talbert,Lexington.
