RICHFIELD Thomas David Akers, 46, Reeves Island
Road, died Saturday (July 28, 2001) at his home.
Born May 9, 1955, in Mullens, W.Va., Mr. Akers was a son of
Shirley Ann Houston Beachum, Richfield, and the late William Edgar Akers. He was a lumber
cutter for Patrick Industries.
A son, David Edgar Akers, preceded him in death.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include daughter
Christina Marie Akers, of the home; son Teddy Ray Akers, Beckley, W.Va.; brother Aaron
Kelly Akers, Mullens, W.Va.; and sisters Frankie Reed, New London, Peggy Fury and
Stephanie Blalock, both of Richfield, Darlene Hailey, Locust, and Malissa Barnette,
Albemarle.

LEXINGTON Dorothy Lee Alley Hodge, 60, 115 Edgewood
Drive, Apt. 64, died Sunday (July 29, 2001) at her home.

Barbara B. Johnson
The funeral will be Thursday for Barbara Bailey Johnson,
70, 111 E. Cemetery St., who died Sunday (July 29, 2001) at Rowan Regional MedicalCenter
after several months of illness.

Gerald Lee Moore
DAVIDSON Gerald Lee Moore, 48, 6376 Fox Chase Drive,
died Sunday (July 29, 2001) at his home.
Born June 29, 1953, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Moore was a son
of Robert Lee Moore and Margaret Kelly Moore, both of Kannapolis.
He worked for Liberty Life Insurance Co. for 13 years. In
1984 he started a Nationwide Insurance Co. He owned and operated the Gerald Moore
Insurance Agency in Kannapolis until he retired in 1998.
He received many Nationwide awards and recognitions,
including: charter member of Chairman Life Council; member of Million Dollar Roundtable;
winner of Presidents Conference and Champion award every year he was with the
company; winner of the National Sales Achievement award for 15 years; Company Line Leader
for seven years. Nationally, he was the number one auto producer for seven years and Agent
of the Year every year of his employment. He was a member of the Nationwide Hall of Fame.
Mr. Moore was also a member of Cabarrus County Life
Underwriters; National MSSociety; YMCABoard of Electors; board of the directors for
Foundation of the Carolinas; and a past member of Kannapolis Noon Optimist Club.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include stepmother
Margaret Moore, Kannapolis; wife Susan Howell Moore; son Wesley Moore, Weston, Fla.; and
daughter April Moore, of the home.

Kannapolis.

Sadie K.Roseman
ROCKWELL Sadie Kluttz Roseman, 77, Rockwell, died
Monday (July 30, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Nov. 16, 1923, in Rowan County, Mrs. Roseman, a
daughter of the late John Lewis and Carrie Lusetta Holshouser Kluttz, was a 1942 graduate
of Rockwell High School. She retired as a spinner from Cannon Mills plant 1.
A member of Grace Lowerstone United Church of Christ, she
was a former member of the choir and Sunday school and Bible school teacher.
A son, Terry Lane Roseman, died in 1946; a daughter, Nancy
R. Morgan, died June 23, 1999.
Survivors include son Victor Bub Roseman,
Rockwell; daughter Patsy R. Barbee, Mount Pleasant; sisters Maude Turtle
Rogers, Elkin, and Dorothy Doc Basinger and Margie Nance, both of Salisbury;
seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Janie S. Straughn
Janie Shue Straughn, 79, 820 Goodson Road, died Monday
(July 30, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 3, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Straughn, a
daughter of the late Clifford F. and Fanny Eller Shue, was educated in the Rowan County
schools and Catawba College.
She was an administrative clerk at Rowan Regional Medical
Center emergency room and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Her husband, William Rufus Straughn, died July 3, 1973; a
son, Clifford Jay Straughn, died Feb. 19, 1977.
Survivors include son William R. Straughn Jr., Salisbury;
daughter Betty S. OKusky, Newport News,Va.; seven grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
Services:2 p.m. Wednesday,Summersett Funeral Home chapel,
conducted by the Rev. William R. Ragsdale, pastor, Main Street United Methodist Church.

Nellie D. Turner
Nellie Dwiggins Turner, 86, 225 W. Miller St., died Monday
(July 30, 2001) at her home.
Born Feb. 13, 1915, in Davie County, Mrs. Turner, a
daughter of the late G.C. and Bessie Cartner Dwiggins, was a graduate of Davie County
schools.
She retired in 1975 after 28 years with A&P grocery
store. She was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include husband William Bill Turner,
whom she married Nov. 15, 1939; son Johnny S. J.T. Turner, Salisbury; and
brother Paul Foster Dwiggins, Mocksville.

Nellie Karriker West
MOUNT ULLA Nellie Karriker West, 82, Centenary
Church Road, died Monday (July 30, 2001) at Genesis ElderCare, Mooresville.
Born May 5, 1919, in Rowan County, Mrs. West was a daughter
of the late John Gilbert and Laura Upright Karriker. She retired as a supervisor from
Draymore Manufacturing.
An active lifetime member of St. Lukes Lutheran
Church, she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir and the Women of the
Church.
Survivors include husband William Warlick West; daughter
Peggy West Smith, Mount Ulla; sister Helen K.Brown, Mount Ulla; two grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.

Binh Nhi Tran
CHINA GROVE Binh Nhi Tran, 26, 1925 N. Main St.,
died Monday (July 30, 2001) in Mecklenburg County from injuries sustained in a
pedestrian/automobile accident on Interstate 85.
Born Sept. 20, 1974, in South Vietnam, Mr. Tran was a son
of Toan Quang and Micheline Yvette Tran of China Grove. He was a 1994 graduate of South
Rowan High School and of Central Piedmont Community College, in auto body repair.
He was a painter with Freightliner and a member of St.
Marks Lutheran Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brothers
Viet Quoc, Tran Viet and Elvies Tran, all of China Grove; and sisters Mai Thuy Ngoc Tran,
Yadkinville, and Van Thuy Ngoc Tran and Dung Cathy Thuy Ngoc Tran, both of
China Grove.
