Shooting brings latest charges against west Rowan man

BY STAFF REPORT
SALISBURY POST

A western Rowan County man, allegedly shot by his stepfather, remained in critical condition Saturday with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Roger Walker, 26, of 125 Mountain View Road was shot once at about 7 p.m. Friday at his home, according to Lt. Debra Yokley of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators charged Walker’s stepfather, Dewey Evans Doolittle, 56, of the same Mountain View Road address, with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Doolittle had posted his $5,000 bond as of Saturday, according to an officer at the Rowan County Detention Center.

Post files show that Doolittle had been charged at least three times previously with assaults against family members.

Twice in 1987, Doolittle faced charges of assaulting a female in complaints taken out by Juanita Doolittle.

In December 1992, he faced a charge of assault with a deadly weapon in a complaint filed by Paul S. Doolittle, who alleged that Dewey Doolittle cut him with a kitchen knife and hit him on the head with a candle holder.

Emergency personnel transported Walker to Rowan Regional Medical Center soon after the shooting Friday evening. Reports said he had a gunshot wound to his right chest area from a .38-caliber gun.

Walker later went to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday.

Yokley had no other details on the shooting.
