Ernest ‘June’ Avery

CLEVELAND—Ernest “June” Avery, 72, Krider Street, formerly of Richmond, Va., died Wednesday (July 25, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 19, 1928, in Rowan County, Mr. Avery was a son of the late Ernest and Sarah Montgomery Avery.

He attended RAClement HighSchool and retired from Morgan Bagging Co., Richmond, Va. He was also a veteran of the U.S.Army.

He attended Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church, Woodleaf, when he was young.

Survivors include sons Stuart Avery and Darwin Louis Avery, both of Cleveland; daughter Ernestine Cornelius, Cleveland; brother James “Doc” Avery, Salisbury; sisters Lucille A. Scott, Salisbury, and Thelma Jones, Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday,at Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Rankin. Burial, U.S.National Cemetery with military rites by the Salisbury-Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

 

Shirley Boger

CONCORD—Shirley McNeil Boger, 65, Caremore Retirement Center, died Friday (July 27, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center after two months of illness.

Born Aug. 11, 1935, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late Columbus W. and Callie Osborne McNeil. Educated in the Cabarrus County Schools, she was a member of Mt. Zion Freewill Baptist Church.

She was a general cashier, working at several military bases, especially the NCO clubs of Dover and Charleston Air Force bases.

Later, she worked for the Charleston Civil Service Department until her retirement in 1979.

Survivors include daughter Jennie B. Cannady, Monks Corner, S.C.; sisters Ruby Smith and Betty Christy, both of Kannapolis, and Wilma Brooks, China Grove; two grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Steve Mowery. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. The family will make headquarters at the home of sister Betty Christy, 213 Heintz Ave., Kannapolis.

 

William ‘Bill’ Boyd

STATESVILLE—William Victor “Bill” Boyd, 86, 445 Lewis Ferry Road, died Saturday (July 28, 2001) at Davis Regional Medical Center.

Born March 14, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Boyd was a son of the late Nathaniel B. and Willie Johnston Boyd. He was a retired construction engineer and lived and worked in California for many years before retiring and returning to Iredell County in 1980.

Survivors include wife Shula Morrow; sons Bob Boyd, Wallace, and W. Victor Boyd Jr., Beckworth, Calif.; daughters Marilyn B. McCall, Temple Terrace, FLa., and Kay Scatena, Loyalton, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Fred Sanford. Burial, Iredell Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Margaret Cope

MOCKSVILLE—Margaret Carter Cope, 91, formerly of Hartley Road, died Friday (July 27, 2001) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.

Born June 20, 1910, in Davie County, Mrs. Cope was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Minnie West Carter. She was a homemaker.

A member Liberty United Methodist Church, she served as church pianist, organist and choir director for 65 years. She was also a Sunday School teacher and active in all areas of the church.

She was preceded in death by husband James Foy Cope, who died in 1996, and son James Douglas Cope.

Survivors include sons, Sam Cope, Brevard, and David Cope, Baton Rouge, La.; daughter Marie Ellis, Mocksville; sisters, Sarah Nolley, Mocksville, and Louise Price, Charlotte; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Andrews and the Rev. David Reep. Burial, Liberty United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Edwin R. Donahue

KANNAPOLIS—Edwin R. Donahue, 84, 530 Florence Ave., died Friday (July 27, 2001) at the V.A. Medical Center, Fayetteville, after several years of declining health.

Born Nov. 14, 1916, in Cleveland, Mr. Donahue was a son of the late John H. and Ada Cartner Donahue. He was a member of Friendship Bible Church.

He moved to the area from Cooleemee in 1928 and was employed with Cannon Mills Co. Plant 4 for 54 years, until he retired in 1982.

Mr. Donahue served in the Army during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Christy Donahue, who died in 1995, and son Dwight Donahue.

Survivors include daughter Kay Brown, Denver, N.C.; sons Laney Donahue, Salisbury, and Terry Donahue, Kannapolis; sisters Bernice Deaton, Kannapolis, and Vera Dudley, Concord; brother Doyle Donahue, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jim Pritchett. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park with military rites by DAV Chapter 27.

Visitation: 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Nada Harwood Furr

ALBEMARLE—Nada Luttie Harwood Furr, 83, 21868 Canton Road, died Saturday (July 28, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Sister Mildred Harwood Winecoff lives in Gold Hill.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Vernon McCrary Sr.

HARRISBURG—Vernon Lee McCrary Sr., 64, 133 Autumn Lane, died Saturday (July 28, 2001) at University Hospital.

Daughter Leesa M. Eller lives in Salisbury.

Services:11 a.m. Tuesday, Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Hugh Cooper and brother James McCrary. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Rita Crisco Mullis

KANNAPOLIS—Rita Ilene Crisco Mullis, 58, 405 Oakdale Ave., died unexpectedly Saturday at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Sept. 18, 1942, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Mullis was a daughter of the late Harvey W. and Gertrude Crisco Hurlocker.

She worked for Fieldcrest Cannon Mills as a folder in the Sheet Department at Plant 1 until her retirement due to disability in 1989. She attended New Life Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by daughters Denise Hinson and Tammy Crisco; .

Survivors include husband Harold E. Mullis; daughters Robin and Billie JoTennent, both of Kannapolis; sisters Allie Teeter and Mary Helen Scercy, both of Kannapolis; brother Arnold Hurlocker, Salisbury; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Pastor Lawson Whitson. Burial, Sunset Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Oakdale Avenue.

 

Guy H. Mullis

KANNAPOLIS—Guy Howard Mullis, 76, 2206 Woodlawn St., died Saturday (July 28, 2001) at his home.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Larry Ray Muncy

ROCKWELL—Larry Ray Muncy, 47, 130 Trotters Lane, died Friday (July 27, 2001) at his residence.

Born Sept. 6, 1953, in Iaeger, W.Va., Mr. Muncy was a son of Gladys Osborne Muncy, Elkton, Md., and the late Charlie Muncy. He was a member of Lane Street Church of God.

A graduate of Iaeger HIgh School and Bluefield State College, he was a registered nurse at Liberty Commons Nursing Center.

Survivors include wife Mary Ann Blankenship Muncy, sons Roger Lee Muncy, Kannapolis, and David Ray Muncy, of the home; brothers Lewis Muncy, Elkton, Md., and Roger Dean Muncy, Bradshaw,W.Va; sisters Emma Simmons, Linda Ak and Loretta and Donna Muncy, all of Elkton, Md, and Sandra Rowe; Bradshaw, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. today, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Steve Bailey and the Rev. Wade Eason. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 4 p.m. today at China Grove Church of God.

Maudie Pruett

Maudie Mecimore Pruett, 81, Salisbury, died Saturday (July 28, 2001) at the home of her daughter in Mecklenburg County.

Born Nov. 15, 1919, in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late John Edgar and Sarah Hattie Bolick Mecimore.

Educated in the Gaston County Schools, she was formerly employed by China Grove Cotton Mill and Pittsburgh Plate Glass, Lexington. She was a member of South China Grove Methodist Church.

Survivors include daughters Sarah Torrence, Charlotte, and Patricia Ann Wah, Spencer; brothers Claude and Edgar Mecimore, both of Charlotte, and Charles Mecimore, Greensboro; sisters Geneva Armstrong, Gastonia, Agnes Mixer, China Grove, and Christine Harrington, Charlotte; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside service, 11 a.m. Monday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Derald Adams, pastor of South China Grove Baptist Church.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Nettie Shoaf

LEXINGTON—Nettie Alice Leonard Shoaf, 84, 4870 Arnold Rd., died Friday (July 27, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a serious illness of 10 days.

Services: 4 p.m. today, Shiloh United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Nathan Snider. Burial, church cemetery. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge.

Donald M. Thomason

LEXINGTON—Donald Mason Thomason, 73, 100 Biesecker Road, died Friday (July 27, 2001) after two weeks of serious illness at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Second United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Moore and the Rev. Don Leonard. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.
