Frances Bentley Ellis

Frances Bentley Ellis, 78, Salisbury, died Sunday (July 22, 2001) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Oteen.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Lucy Horton Follette

MOORESVILLE — Lucy Horton Follette, 93, 470 N. Broad St., died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at Grace Hospital, Morganton.

Born Feb. 15, 1908, in Iredell County, Mrs. Follette, a daughter of the late George and Rose Poole Horton, was a homemaker.

Her husband, C.C. “Coot” Follette, and son, Richard “Babe” Follette, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Rufus Follette, Clemmons, and Henry Follette, Salisbury; daughters Rose Follette Foust, Morganton, and Christeen Follette Bowman, Orlando, Fla.; brother Dates Horton, China Grove; sister Evelyn Patterson, China Grove; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Neill Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Harvey Rogers. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Helen Stevens Gaddy

ALBEMARLE — Helen Stevens Gaddy, 78, 710 Coble Ave., died Sunday (July 22, 2001) at her home.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Main Street United Methodist Church. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Nathaniel Green

The funeral will be Wednesday for Nathaniel Green, 62, 1229 Grady St., who died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a week of serious illness.

Born Sept. 19, 1938, in Salisbury, Mr. Green, a son of the late Fred and Willie Ricks Green, was a graduate of Dunbar High School in East Spencer. He retired as a kile operator from Boral Bricks.

A member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, East Spencer, he was a former member of Senior Usher Board 1.

Survivors include daughter Delorise Phillips, Columbia, S.C.; brother Sonnie Green, East Spencer; and two grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Shady Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John G. Gaston. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Charles Ray Lemly

KANNAPOLIS — Charles Ray Lemly, 69, 805 West A St., died Monday (July 23, 2001) at his home.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Jimmy Howard Myers

Jimmy Howard Myers, 79, Salisbury, died Sunday (July 22, 2001) at Carillon Assisted Living Center after 2 12 years of declining health and a week of serious illness.

Born Jan, 28, 1922, in Rowan County, Mr. Myers was a son of the late John Olin and Minnie Gibbons Myers. He was educated in the Woodleaf schools and graduated from Woodleaf High School.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a farmer and owned and operated Myers Produce Market on U.S. 601 with his sons for 30 years.

He was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon.

His wife, Mary Ellen Click Myers, died Dec. 28, 2000.

Survivors include sons John Howard and Charles Anderson “Andy” Myers, both of Salisbury; daughter Jenny Myers Earnhardt, Salisbury; brother Bobby Olin Myers, Salisbury; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Unity Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Malcolm Bullock and the Rev. Spears Alexander Jr. Burial, church cemetery, 10:30 a.m. Tuesday with military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: In the church fellowship hall after the services. At other times, the family will be at the home of son Andy Myers.

Mary Lizzie Redmond

OLIN — Mary Lizzie Redmond, 85, 1139 Tabor Road, died Friday (July 20, 2001) after an extended illness.

Born Jan. 15, 1916, in Rowan County, Mrs. Redmond was the daughter of the late Samuel Hyde and Ossie Luckey McClelland. The founder of Chief Cornerstone Holiness Church, for many years she was under Bishop Clarence Minor and later Bishop C.D. Mungo. She pastored until her health failed.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ruth H. Woods, and a grandchild.

Survivors include husband John Henry Redmond; daughters Claudia H. Nichols, Harmony, Rosemary Hairston, Olin, and Beulah Jones, Hempstead, N.Y.; stepdaughters Rosalyn Steele and Barbara Jones, both of Harmony, and Clarice Redmond, Brooklyn, N.Y.; brother Willie Lee McClelland, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home chapel, Statesville, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Griffin. Burial, Zion Hill AME Zion Church cemetery, Houstonville.

Visitation: 1:30-2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Tabor Road.

 

Kathleen Thompson

The funeral will be Tuesday for Kathleen Lentz Thompson, 97, Salisbury, who died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home after a period of declining health.

Born March 19, 1904, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Thompson, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Margaret Arey Lentz, was educated at Farm Life School. She was a homemaker and member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Mount Ulla.

Her husband, J. Grady Thompson, died Feb. 24, 1953.

Survivors include sons Ervin B. Thompson, Salisbury, and Frank H. Thompson, Woodleaf; daughters Eleanor T. Ijames, Helen T. Bonds and Martha Lou T. Goodson, all of Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, family plot at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Mount Ulla, conducted by the Rev. Milbert Kurtz.

Visitation: After the graveside service in the church fellowship building. At other times, the family will be at their respective homes. Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

Yates W. Havnaer

CONOVER — Yates Warlick Havnaer, father of Stephen D. Havnaer, Salisbury, died Sunday (July 22, 2001) at Abernethy Center, Newton.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. Burial, Conover City cemetery.

Visitation: 10:30-11 a.m. at the church.

Drum Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Billy Brown Wilhelm

FAITH — The funeral will be Tuesday for Billy Brown Wilhelm, 71, Faith, who died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born June 6, 1930, in Rowan County, Mr. Wilhelm, a son of the late W.A. and Ina Brown Wilhelm, was a 1948 graduate of Granite Quarry High School. He owned and operated Bill Wilhelm Heating Oil Co. since 1968.

A member of Faith Baptist Church, he served in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War. He was a member of Faith American Legion, Voiture 115 40 & 8 VFW and Salisbury Moose Lodge.

His wife, Joan Holshouser Wilhelm, died Sept. 5, 2000.

Survivors include son George A. Wilhelm, Faith; daughter Gloria Ann Wilhelm, Faith; brother Bobby J. Wilhelm, Salisbury; sister LaNell W. Yandle, Wilmington; and two granddaughters.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Faith Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles R. Brawley. Faith American Legion will be seated as a group in the church. Burial, church cemetery with military rites by Faith American Legion.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.
