Margaret Funderburk
ROCKWELL Margaret Castor Funderburk, 75, Rockwell, died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at her residence.
Born Feb. 1, 1926, in Rowan County, Mrs. Funderburk was the daughter of the late Henry M. and Annie Basinger Castor. She was educated in the Rowan County schools.
She was retired from KoSa, where she was a beamer. She was a member of Organ Lutheran Church, WELCA, AAL and Augsburg I Sunday School Class and was a choir member.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Funderburk, in May 1981.
Survivors include sons Dale and David Funderburk, both of Rockwell; brother Clarence Castor, Rockwell; sisters Kathleen Fesperman,Newberry, S.C., Helen Overcash, Salisbury, and Sylvia Shue, Greensboro; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Organ Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John E.Pless, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight at Powles Funeral Home.

ALBEMARLE Barney Furr, 74, 1117 Austin Street, died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Johnnie Morton. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the home on Austin Street.
Roscoe Helms
KANNAPOLIS Roscoe Helms, 88, 2822 N. Cannon Blvd., died Friday (July 20, 2001) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord.
Born Aug. 22, 1912, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Helms was the son of the late James Robert and Mary Melissa Yates Helms.
He was retired from Cannon Mills Plant six in Concord.He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughter Kay Frances Pethel, Kannapolis; son Rodney Douglas Helms, Kannapolis; sisters Janie Moore, China Grove, and Annie Hahn, Albemarle; brother Frank Helms, Concord; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Ladys Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday before the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Kay Frances Pethel, 2822 N. Cannon Blvd., with whom he made his home.
Terrie Spencer Hess
Terrie Spencer Hess, 49, Salisbury, died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at her residence after several months of declining health.
Born Aug. 14, 1951. in Salisbury, Mrs. Hess was the daughter of Doris Hess Spencer, Salisbury, and the late Clyde Spencer. She was educated in the Salisbury city schools and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Hess attended Trinity Baptist Church. She was past chairperson of the Rowan Republican Party and served as president of the Rowan Republican Women. She was a volunteer with the Guardian Ad Litem program and was the first president of Prevent Child Abuse Rowan.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Hess, whom she married Dec. 6, 1970; son Telley Hess, Lexington; and sister LuAnn Allman, Salisbury.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Max Mills, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church. The body will be cremated.
Visitation: 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Lola Combs Pinkston
HENDERSONVILLE Lola Pauline Combs Pinkston, 80, Lamb Mountain Road, died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at Brian Center in Hendersonville after several months of declining health.
Born Feb. 18, 1921, Mrs. Pinkston was the daughter of the late Marshall and Laura McCreary Combs. She was a homemaker and a member of Victory Baptist Church in Hendersonville.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Norman Pinkston, and son Gary Marshall Pinkston.
Survivors include sons Bobby Combs, Charlotte, and Gene Wright and Craig Pinkston, both of Salisbury; sisters Alma Shoaf, Cooleemee, and Ruth Troutman, Salisbury; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eaton Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Stanley Adcock. Burial will be at Legion Memorial Park, Cooleemee.

James Sides Jr.
HIDDENITE James William Sides Jr., 59, Leach Road, died Friday(July 20, 2001) at his residence.
Born Jan. 23, 1942, in Rowan County, Mr. Sides was the son of James W. Sides, Salisbury, and the late Frances Sides. He was educated in the Rowan County Schools.
He was a supervisor and senior employee with Freightliner Trucking. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Salisbury and attended Freedom Baptist Church in Hiddenite.
He was a member of BASS, the Ellis Crossroad Saddle Club and was a former minor league baseball player with the Greensboro Yankees.
In addition to his father, survivors include wife Betty Warren Sides; daughter Sherry Sides, Spencer; stepson Tracy King, Hiddenite; brother Ronnie Sides, Salisbury; sisters Barbara Gail Cobb, Summerfield, S.C., and Patricia Sides, Salisbury; and one step-grandson.
Services: 3 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Sam Vallini and the Rev. Craig Hamlin. Burial will be at the Hiddenite Cemetery.

George Ray Smith Jr.
KANNAPOLIS George Ray Smith Jr., 68, 2910 Glendale Ave., died Wednesday (July 18, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born April 23, 1933, in Rowan County, Mr. Smith was the son of George Ray and Georgia Mae Harris Smith.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1963 to 1966. He retired from Cannon Mills as a slicer.
Survivors include wife Amanda Alexander Smith; daughters Shane Smith Barnes and Sonja Smith Cowan, both of Concord, and Sabetha L. Springs, Kannapolis; sons George Grayling Smith, Morganton, and Peter Alexander Smith, Concord; sisters Annie Ruth Stoney , Chesapeake, Va., and Kay Frances Fowler, Mount Rainer, Md.; brother Jimmie Lee Smith, Atlanta, Ga.; foster sisters Maxine Holmes and Libby Clinton, both of Salisbury; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services: 12 p.m. Monday at New Piney Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tracy Caldwell and the Rev. Tenwick Fisher. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.
Visitation: 11a.m.-12 p.m. Monday at the church. At other times, they will be at the home.
