West star is Catawba recruit

BY RONNIE GALLAGHER
SALISBURY POST

GREENSBORO — Moments after the West’s 79-68 victory over the East Tuesday night in the East-West All-Star Game, it was easy to see why Catawba College women’s basketball coach John Duncan recruited Grimsley’s Felisha Tate to Salisbury.

She’s a gamer.

Tate talked with the media — rather, she tried to talk to the media. Her right jaw was swollen, thanks to a good hard elbow to the cheek. But she managed a smile when asked about coming to Catawba.

“Catawba’s whole team plays with a lot of chemistry,” the solid, 5-foot-7, 162-pound point guard said. “I really like their team. I can’t wait to get my chance to fit in.”

Tate is one of 12 recruits Duncan has brought in after going 25-5 last season and making the national playoffs. She sees no reason the Indians can’t continue that trend. With four-year starter Lakai Brice graduated, the point guard spot is open.

“I saw them play and it was an up-tempo game,” Tate said. “If I’m going to play point guard, that’s the situation I want to be in.”

In 18 minutes Tuesday, she chipped in with five points, three rebounds, three assists and that busted mouth.

“My jaw’s locked up,” she sighed.

Tate said she plans to lock up some opposing South Atlantic Conference opponents with tough defense.

“I’m going to bring defensive intensity,” she said. “Even though I’ll be young, I’ll be a growing leader. That’s what I did here. That’s what I did at Grimsley and that’s what I’d like to do at Catawba.”
