Rev. Johnnie Hawkins
GOLD HILL — The Rev. Johnnie Everette Hawkins,
70, 24094 Hwy. 49, died Sunday (July 15, 2001) at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.
Born May 22, 1931, in Macon, Ga., Rev. Hawkins
was a son of the late John E. and Beatrice Fesperman Hawkins. A graduate of
Waxhaw High School and High Point University, he earned his master of divinity
degree from Duke University. He was ordained an elder in the Methodist church in
1958 and retired as a minister in 2000.
Rev. Hawkins served churches in Asheboro,
Charlotte, Concord, Jonesville, Asheville, Thomasville, China Grove,
Statesville, Misenheimer, Norwood and Richfield.
There are no immediate survivors.

Leslie Cecil Lakey
MOCKSVILLE — Leslie Cecil Lakey, 77, Friendship
Court, died Monday (July 16, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center.
Born March 19, 1924, in Yadkin County, Mr. Lakey
was a son of the late Hiram Austin and Margaret Todd Lakey. He retired as a
partner in Seaford Lumber Co. He was a member of Hardison United Methodist
Church and was a charter member of Jericho Hardison Ruritan Club.
His first wife, Geraldine Seaford Lakey, died in
1962.
Survivors include wife Phoebe Misenheimer Lakey;
sons Donald and Eric F. Lakey and Phillip Fuller, all of Mocksville, Walter M.
Fuller, Harmony, and William T. Fuller, Gold Hill; daughter LuAnn L. Angell,
Mocksville; brother Clyde Lakey, Mocksville; sisters Dorothy Walker and Margaret
R. Lakey, Mocksville; and 11 grandchildren.

Dwight A. Overcash

Alexander Overcash, 75, 545 Rock Grove Church Road, who died Monday (July 16,
2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born May 1, 1926, in Rowan County, Mr. Overcash,
a son of the late L.M. and Emma Bost Overcash, was educated in the Rowan County
schools. He retired fromCannon Mills, where he supervised the cutting room.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church
and the Young at Heart Senior Group and taught the Men’s Bible Class.
Survivors include wife Kathleen Self Overcash;
son Randy Overcash, Salisbury; stepsons Tim Galliher, ChapelHill, and Joel
Galliher, Cornelius; stepdaughters Tanya Nicholson, Salisbury, and Donna Moore,
Kannapolis; brothers L.M. Overcash Jr., China Grove, Bill Overcash, Rockwell,
Curtis and Gene Overcash, both of Salisbury, and Wayne Overcash, Whiteville;
sisters Bernice Castor, Mavis Funderburk and Carolyn Allman, all of Salisbury;
and 14 grandchildren.

Dorothy L. Bessent
FAIR BLUFF — Dorothy Mae Lingle Bessent, 75,
formerly of 37 Small St., died Sunday (July 15, 2001) at NorthEast Medical
Center, Concord, after a lengthy illness.
Born March 13, 1926, in Rowan County, Mrs.
Bessent, a daughter of the late William Thornton and Beulah Augusta Brown Lingle,
resided in Fair Bluff for 20 years. She was earlier employed with Rouzer Motor
Parts in Salisbury and in 1982 retired after many years from X-Cel Tire.
A member of Fair Bluff Baptist Church, she was a
former member of the Literacy Council of Columbus County and taught literacy for
many years. She was also a member of the RSVP committee of Southeastern
Community College, Whiteville.
Her husband, Paul S. Bessent, died March 5, 1994.
Survivors include son Paul S. Bessent Jr.,
Kannapolis; daughter Laura Bessent Burgess, Greenville, S.C.; and sister Gladys
Melton, Charlotte.

Frances Loflin Hess
Frances Loflin Hess, 87, died Monday (July 16,
2001) at her residence after six months of declining health.
Born Feb. 23, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Hess
was a daughter of the late Fletcher C. and Annie Hoffman Loflin.
Educated in the Rowan County Schools, she was a
homemaker. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lee
Mac Hess; daughter Patty Farmer, Spencer; sister Dot Loflin, Salisbury; one
grandson; and one great-grandson.
Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Lyerly Funeral
Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. William Ragsdale, pastor of Main Street
United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Lynn Ogburn, pastor of Yadkin United
Methodist Church. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park.

Fay Cruse Roseman
The funeral will be Wednesday for Fay Cruse
Roseman, 90, who died Tuesday ( July 17, 2001) at Liberty Commons Health Care in
Salisbury after a period of declining health.
Born May 5, 1911, in Rowan County, Mrs. Roseman
was the daughter of the late John Edward and Ida Jane Ritchie Cruse. She was
educated at Mulberry School and Salisbury High School.
She was the owner and operator of Roseman’s
Grocery Store on North Main Street and worked at the Granite Quarry school
cafeteria. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she
was active in Sunday school and various other groups. She was also a volunteer
at the Salisbury Lutheran Home.
Mrs. Roseman was preceded in death by her
husband, M.G. Roseman, on Sept. 7, 1987; daughter Doris Roseman Barringer on
April 13, 1985; and son M.G. Roseman Jr. on March 25, 1991.
Survivors include daughter Joyce Roseman Wilhelm
of Salisbury; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. William Ketchie. Burial, family plot in
the church cemetery.
Visitation: 7–8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral
Home, Salisbury. The family will also receive friends in the church fellowship
hall from 10–11 a.m., Wednesday.
