Elma Gibson

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Tuesday for Elma Sellers Gibson, 87, 1410 Ontario Drive, who died Saturday (July 14, 2001) at her home after 18 months of declining health and a month of serious illness.

Born March 18, 1914, in Ruby, S.C., Mrs. Gibson was a daughter of the late Archie Hilton and Nellie Claudine Allen Sellers. She retired from Cannon Mills spinning room plant 1. She was a member of Skyland Baptist Church.

Her husband, FrankGibson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include brother Edward H. Sellers, Kannapolis; sister Cleo Stafford, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Skyland Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Isenhour. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home.

Frances Hess

Frances Hess, 87, Salisbury, died Monday (July 16, 2001) at her home.

Leslie Cecil Lakey

MOCKSVILLE — Leslie Cecil Lakey, Friendship Court, died Monday (July 16, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Eaton Funeral Service is in charge.

 

George McElveen Jr.

Commander George Gamel McElveen Jr., 54, died Friday (July 13, 2001) in Hampton, Va.

A native of Salisbury, Mr. McElveen was the son of George Gamel McElveen, Mooresville.

Mr. McElveen retired from the U.S. Navy in 1997 after 28 years. He served during the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars and was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Mooresville.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include wife Gayle McElveen; son Patrick McElveen, Hampton; daughter Natalie Greer, Hampton, Va.; sisters Brenda Troutman, Concord, and Elaine Ballard and Christa Owens, Mooresville; brother Ronald McElveen, Mooresville.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Central United Methodist Church, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Phil DeBerry.

Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions in charge.

John Patterson Miller

John Patterson Miller, 73, 141 McCoy Road, died Monday (July 16, 2001)at his home.

Born Sept. 18, 1927, in Mooresville, Mr. Miller, a son of the late Bachman Henry and Mary Josephine Melchor Miller, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

He was a manufacturer’s representative of floral supplies and later worked as manager of Hanford Floral Supplies.

A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, he was on the church council. With his wife, he founded Brooks Sunday school class. He was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, member of the Men’s Chorus, project manager of the Rowan Helping Ministries and Habitat for Humanity program at St. John’s.

He was a Cub Scoutmaster, a former member of Salisbury Kiwanis Club and was on the board of directors; was a member of Hudson-Miller-Tatum Post 3006, VFW, Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge 576 and Salisbury Bass Club.

A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.He was with the 346 Engineer Equipment Company in the European Theatre of Operation.

Survivors include wife Doris “Dot” Sink Miller; sons John Kenneth Miller,Salisbury, and David Patterson Miller, Mooresville; daughter Martha Miller Wilson, Salisbury; brothers W.E. and Harry G. Miller, both of China Grove, and James R. Miller, Atlanta, Ga.; sister Sara Miller Simons, Tucson, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl Sachtleben, senior pastor; the Rev. Jennifer Ginn, associate pastor; and the Rev. David K. Huddle, Becks Lutheran Church, Lexington. The body will be cremated and the ashes placed in St. John’s Columbarium.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Dwight Alexander Overcash, 75, 545 RockGrove Church Road, died Monday (July 16, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Delores E. Wilson

Delores Elizabeth Wilson, 57, Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, died Sunday (July 15, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Gilmore’s Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge.

The family will be at the home of sister Linda Boyd, 505 N. Ellis St., Apt. 207, and at Greater End Time HarvestChurch office, 123 N. Long St., where her son, Bishop Harold Wilson, is the pastor.
