Elijah Alexander Jr.

HICKORY — Elijah Alexander Jr., 64, 98 Third Ave. S.E., Apt. 28, died Saturday (July 7, 2001) at Catawba Valley Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 5, 1937, in Salisbury, Mr. Alexander was a son of the late Elijah and Ann Smith Alexander.

A graduate of J.C. Price High School, he retired from Hickory Printing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107 and Deliverance Hall Church of Jesus Christ No. 1, Longview.

Survivors include sons Daniel Alexander, Newton, and Lawrence Alexander, Lexington Park, Md.; daughters Vanda A. Bye and Faith A. Smith, both of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Paulovia Jones, East Spencer; sisters Molly Feimster, Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the home of Molly Feimster, 720 Williams Road, Salisbury.

Arrangements are incomplete. Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Elizabeth T. Corriher

Elizabeth Thompson Corriher, 79, Salisbury, died Saturday (July 7, 2001) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem, following a brief illness.

Born Feb. 4, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Corriher was a daughter of the late Alice Kistler and Henry Luther Thompson. She was educated at Mount Ulla School and graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College.

A homemaker, she retired from Norman’s of Salisbury in 1985 after 20 years of service. She was a member of Haven Lutheran Church, its choir and many committees.

Her husband, A. Ray Corriher, died in 1996.

Survivors include sons A. Ray Corriher Jr., Winston-Salem, and Randall A. Corriher, Durham; daughters Carol Archangeli, Holly, Mich., and Lynn English, Evansville, Ind.; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Haven Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronald W. Fink, pastor. Burial, Old Historic Salisbury National Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Ruby Newton Gainey

ALBEMARLE — Ruby Magdaline Newton Gainey, 77, 1306 Long St. Ext., died Sunday (July 8, 2001) at her home.

Born July 31, 1923, in Albemarle, Mrs. Gainey was a daughter of Ed J. and Lula Deese Newton. She retired from Collins & Aikman, where she worked as carpet inspector.

Her husband, William Seth Gainey, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Edmond and Gilbert Gainey, both of Lumberton, and Delain Gainey, Kannapolis; daughter Deloris G. Buchanan, Albemarle; half brothers Edgar Newton, California, Clyde Newton, Kannapolis, and R.C. Newton, Georgia; half sisters Vivian Luther and Carolyn Newton, both of Mount Gilead; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Stanly Gardens of Memory, conducted by the Rev. Michael D. Brewer.

Visitation: Any time at Hartsell Funeral Home or at the family’s home.

Robert Hunt

LEXINGTON — Robert Lindsay Hunt, 91, of Briggs Road, died Saturday (July 7, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 12, 1909, in Davidson County, Mr. Hunt was a son of the late Jones C. and Louise Young Hunt. He was a retired employee of North Carolina Finishing Company, where he worked for many years. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Hattie Styers Hunt of the home; daughters Joan Cook and Dare Bailey, both of Lexington; sister Lena Owens, Lexington; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Antioch Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Roy Queen. Burial, in church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Briggs Funeral Home, Denton. At other times the family will be at the home on Briggs Road.

Eva Kee

CONCORD — Eva Kee, 81, of 430 Brookwood Ave. N.E., died Sunday (July 8, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Aug. 6, 1919, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Kee was a daughter of the late Charlie and Gussie Blackwelder Fink. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons Ben Kee, Salisbury, Charles J. Kee and Lewis J. Kee Jr., both of Concord, and Walter L. Kee, Mount Pleasant; brother William Fink, Concord; sisters Myrtle Lambert, Concord, and Beulah Stephens, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Gales. Burial in Pitts Baptist Church cemetery, Harrisburg.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Margie Taylor Mota

WOODLEAF — Margie Taylor Mota, 45, Needmore Road, died Saturday (July 7, 2001) at her home.

Born March 29, 1956, in Rowan County, Mrs. Mota was a daughter of Floyd Taylor Jr. and the late Martha Reavis Taylor. She was a Baptist.

Son Jeffrey Lee Parker and daughter Angela Dawn Parker preceded her in death.

Survivors include sister Diane Mays, Woodleaf.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Needmore Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Cox and Howard Wagoner.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Davie Funeral Service chapel.

 

Shirley Richardson

MOCKSVILLE — Shirley Carr Richardson, 67, Hospital Street Ext., died Sunday (July 8, 2001) at his home.

Born Aug. 25, 1933, in Davie County, Mr. Richardson was a son of the late Robert Leslie and Lettie Elnora Boyd Richardson.

He retired from the U.S. Army and served in the National Guard. He worked for a short time at Ingersol-Rand and had driven a bus for the Davie County Schools for 10 years. He was a Presbyterian.

Survivors include wife Ethel Baity Richardson; sons Billy C. and James B. Richardson, both of Greensboro, and Charles S. Richardson, Rochester, N.Y.; daughter Wanda L. Fortner, Richfield; brothers Clyde Richardson, Kentucky, William L. Richardson, Mocksville, and Bobby G. Richardson, Chapin, S.C.; sisters Dorothy Smith, Welcome, Louise Swisher, Goldsboro, and Annie Schiller and Elizabeth Cale, both of Norfolk, Va.; nine grandchildren; and one stepgrandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Eaton Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Neal Carter and the Rev. Gary Richardson. Burial, Rose Cemetery, with military rites by the 11th District Memorial Guard.

Visitation: 7-8:30 Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Mildred Kirk Shortall

Mildred Kirk Shortall, 1211 Arbor Drive, died Sunday (July 8, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after an illness of two months.

Born in Salisbury, Mrs. Shortall was a daughter of the late Arnold Burtis Clay and Virley Maxwell Kirk.

She was educated at Boyden High School and was a retired federal employee, working in Washington, Germany, Philippines and Japan. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury.

Her husband, William Henry Shortall, died on June 4, 1989.

Survivors include son David Lee Nash, Dunkirk, Md.; stepson William Henry ShortallJr., Poolesville, Md.; stepdaughter Jo Ann Spiller, McLean, Va.; brother Jerry Franklin Kirk, Santa Clara, Calif.; sisters Dorothy Kirk Enick and Jean Kirk Ramsey, both of Salisbury, and Nina Jo Kirk Scoggins, Lexington; and eight grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Keith Flippin, minister of First Baptist Church.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.
