Mary Lucille Boger

MOCKSVILLE — Mary Lucille Joyner Boger, 70, Cana Road, died Friday (June 29, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Born July 10, 1930, in Yadkin County, she was the daughter of the late Stanley Dolphus and Gertrude Holland Joyner. Mrs. Boger had retired after 36 years as an inspector with Sarah Lee Textile Corp.

She graduated in 1948 from Harmony High School. A member of Liberty Baptist Church, she sang in the choir and was active in the Helpers Sunday School Class and the Community Samaritans.

Her husband, Thomas Craig Boger, died June 22, 1998.

Survivors include daughter Dana Wolfington, Winston-Salem; son Clay Joyner, Harmony; and sister Lorene Moore, Yadkinville.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Liberty Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Marvin Blackburn. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:5 to 7 p.m. today, Eaton Funeral Home.

George Brandon Jr.

KANNAPOLIS — George B. Brandon Jr., 79, 501 Tuttlewood Drive, died Saturday (June 30, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. He had been in declining health for six months and seriously ill for three weeks.

Born June 29, 1922, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late George B. and Lillian Suther Brandon. Retired from the cotton department at Cannon Mills, he was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church. A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son, George B. Brandon III.

Survivors include wife Dorothy Patterson Brandon; sons Richard A. Brandon, Millbridge, and Thomas H. Brandon, Leesburg, Va.; brothers Dr. Ralph Brandon, Punta Gorda, Fla., Charles William Brandon, Concord, and the Rev. Don Brandon, Knoxville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Hoke Ritchie and the Rev. Billy Rintz. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park. The body will remain at Lady’s Funeral Home until taken to the church.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the residence today.

Alice Oliver Gibbs

Alice Oliver Gibbs, 81, 538 Lafayette Circle, died Saturday (June 30, 2001) at home after an extended illness.

The family will receive friends at the home of Sarah Jackson, 135 Ridge Ave.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Steven D. Helms

ALBEMARLE — Steven Delane Helms, 35, 614 Canady Lane, Sneads Ferry, formerly of Albemarle, died Thursday ( June 28, 2001) at Onslow Regional Hospital, Jacksonville.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Timothy Swaringen. Burial, Norview Gardens, Norwood.

The family will be at the home of his mother, Annette Jones, 1424 Biltmore St.

 

Claude B. Horne

CONCORD — Claude B. Horne, 85, 2726 Ridge Ave., died Friday (June 29, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center.

He was the father of Patricia Craddock, China Grove.

Mr. Horne had retired from the weave room of Cannon Mills Co. Plant 4,Kannapolis. He was a member of Mills Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Mills Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by Elder Rom Kerley and Elder Joe Helms. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park. The body will be taken to the church at 1:30.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. today, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Irene Effie Johnson

KANNAPOLIS — Irene Effie Johnson, 86, 507 Rosemont Ave., died Saturday (June 30, 2001) at the Brian Center in Concord. She had been in declining health for several years and seriously ill for one week.

Born on Oct. 27, 1914, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Gertrude Johnson Rose. A graduate of the Rowan County schools, she had retired in 1979 as a dietitian at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was a life member of Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, where she served on the church board and the council.

There are no immediate survivors.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Bobby L. Smith, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of a niece, Blandene Thompson, 1202 Chipola Road.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

John ‘J.C.’ Pharr

KANNAPOLIS — John Clarence “J.C.” Pharr, 89, 917 Laura Ave., died Saturday (June 29, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Jan. 7, 1912, in Iredell County, he was a son of the late William David and Belle Templeton Pharr. He had retired from the No. 7 weave room of Cannon Mills, Plant 1. Mr.Pharr was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon.

His wife, Mabel Staley Pharr, died Aug. 31, 1994.

Survivors include daughter Donice Pharr, Charlotte; and sisters Essie Dixon, Winston-Salem, and Hazel Goodwin and Berlene Kezlan, both of Statesville.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, graveside, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday at Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Hilda Glisson Pressly

ALBEMARLE — Hilda Glisson Pressly, 71, 113 Royal Ave., formerly of Goldsboro, died Wednesday (June 27, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Willowdale Cemetery, Goldsboro.

Visitation: 6-7:30 p.m. today, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of son Jeff Pressly, 113 Royal Ave.

 

Wilma S. Rogers

FAITH — A memorial service will be held Tuesday for Wilma Stirewalt Rogers, 96, formerly of Faith, who died March 27, 2000, in Lake Worth, Fla.

Born Jan. 7, 1904, in Rowan County, Mrs. Rogers was the daughter of the late William Bickley and Margaret Bame Stirewalt. She taught piano in the public schools and gave private lessons. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Ray Rogers, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Patsy Rogers Varnadore, Hypoluxo, Fla.; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Faith Lutheran Church. Burial, church cemetery.

 

Cornelia Sanders

Cornelia Bringle Sanders, 87, formerly of Woodleaf Road, died Saturday (June 30, 2001) at the Brian Center, where she was a resident. She had been in declining health for several years.

Born April 16, 1913, in Woodleaf, she was the daughter of the late John Michael and Julia Cauble Bringle. She was a graduate of the Woodleaf schools. A member of Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church, she had retired as a secretary for Erwin Mills in Cooleemee.

Survivors include sister Florence B. Safely, China Grove.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tony Jordan. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. The body will be taken to the church at 10:30.

Visitation: 6:30-8 p.m. today, Summersett Funeral Home.

Lary Trueblood Scott

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Lary Trueblood Scott, 79, 605 Seneca St., died Friday (June 29, 2001) in Harrisburg.

Born May 22, 1922, in Rowan County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Mack and Gertie Smith Trueblood. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she had retired as a clerk with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Mrs. Scott was a member of the Cathedral of St. Patrick and the Salvation Army.

Survivors include son William D. Scott Jr., Harrisburg; daughter Shelia D. Sullivan, Harrisburg; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Noon Monday, Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton. Burial, Resurrection Cemetery, West Hanover.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to noon Monday, at the funeral home, 704 N. Front St., Steelton.

Edna Skeen

DENTON — Edna Holshouser Skeen, 86, Second Avenue, died Saturday (June 30, 2001) at her residence after an extended illness.

Born on May 2, 1915, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Maxwell Theodore and Cora Ellen Poole Holshouser. She was a member of Lineberry United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include husband Fred Skeen; daughters Cynthia S. Williams, Salisbury, Cathy S. Walsh, Asheboro, and Diane S. Carroll and Fredene S. Williams, both of Denton; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today, Briggs Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.
