KANNAPOLIS — A Kannapolis man remains in serious condition at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord after being shot early Monday during a burglary at his home that netted the suspects only $4.
James Wayne Ray, 31, of 119 Cline St., underwent four hours of surgery after an intruder shot him in the chest shortly after midnight, said Sgt. Joe Allen of the Kannapolis Police Department.
Police arrested Christopher Allen Mabe, 19, around 9 a.m. Monday, after he came to the Police Department for questioning. He is charged with first-degree burglary, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He is in Cabarrus County Jail under $80,000 bond.
Allen said police have identified more suspects but haven’t made additional arrests.
Police responded to a call on Cline Street at 12:20 a.m. Two adults who live in the house with Ray and his 9-year-old son told them that three men, masked and wearing dark clothes, had entered the house minutes earlier.
“Somebody had just come home, and the door wasn’t locked, and (the robbers) just walked right in,” Allen said.
At least two of the men carried guns, one a handgun and another a long gun, Allen said. Ray confronted the robbers, and after a struggle one of them shot him in the chest. The bullet went through his body and exited his back.
A woman who lives in the house, Jacqueline Marcum, 18, gave the men $4.
“They didn’t care how much they got,” Allen said. “They were there to rob the people.”
The people who live at the house — the other is 21-year-old Joshua Wright — told police they recognized Mabe, who may have lost his mask in the fight with Ray. They recognized his voice also, Allen said. Mabe has a record, Allen said, but “nothing nearly as significant as what happened.”
Another burglary in Kannapolis over the weekend ended without violence. Bobby Huntley, of Sibbie Court, told police that three men burst into his home with guns Friday night after he answered a knock at the door.
The men got away with about $70.
